What's helped me most is lowering expectations and knowing you'll have some bad days. This season ive had some of the best rounds of my life and some where it looked like ive never swung a club before. We all want to play good, but being able to play at all is a blessing in itself. Ill always say if a bad round of golf is on your list of problems for a day, you got it pretty damn good playa

Love your channel mate. I'm a young, fit looking 55 and you have helped me so much over the last 12 or so months get my handicap down from over 18 to 14. I have now, on three seperate occasions shot scores of 3 over on the front 9's of three different courses but ballooned out on the back 9's, which I believe is purely mental, so I believe I have got the potential for a lower handicap. I adopted your "Put the driver away and only hit irons" for a couple of months and this has actually helped me in hitting very good, long iron shots to the standard of low single figure players. If I can get my game honed around the greens, I can see my handicap down to high single figures very soon. I play twice per week (Stablefords) and get down the range a few times per week also. My course in Australia is Ocean Shores Country Club and has a "Slope Rating" of 143 off the back tees and 134 off the whites, so it's quite a challenging course. Screw the keyboard warriors and the negative pricks, keep the channel going, It's awesome as well as your sense of humour.

As someone coming back to the sport after a few years, I can't begin to tell you how helpful your videos have been. Your breaking 100 series changed the way I look at golf and has really allowed me to enjoy playing again. This video reminded me of some advice Tiger gave to a reporter back in the day. Basically, they asked him why he played a two iron off of the tee sometimes when he could hit his driver so much further. Tiger explained that it was more important to play the game you have that day on the course and not give in to the pressure to play what everyone else was playing on a hole or even give in to the internal pressure to make a crazy shot you'd likely miss. Consistency and being honest with yourself will get you far in life beyond just the golf course. Thanks again for the video and please keep putting out the great content.

Hi Matty, I want to echo a lot of the comments already expressed about this video: I think it’s one of your best and a perfect encapsulizification of the Way of the Playa, which itself is the shining path to better golf. I took up the game from a standing start a couple of years ago as a 50+ fart, found this channel via Johnny ‘JR’ Robins, and have been a devotee ever since. For entertainment and advice, it’s a clear #1 in a crowded field. I struggled for a while, but came into this Northern Hemisphere summer season with the objectives of breaking 100, getting my handicap into the 20s, and winning something, and all three are achieved - four competition wins on the board so far in fact, and a confidentiality level much improved. But beyond that, you’ve helped me to develop more of a calm, calculating approach, and one that means I don’t suddenly become (even more of) a dick because I didn’t pull off the shot I was hoping for. Bad shots come from bad choices and bad preparation, the cause is lost before the swing. This is now so clear to me, and it’s what you’ve been saying all along. Thanks Baus, keep going. You’re the one doing the most to lower the worldwide average handicap ❤

And sometimes, you just still play bad. I found the first break 90 video on this channel, and have followed since. Went from 20 to 7 index, and broke 80 severel times. This season I struggle to break 90, I just hit to many bad shots. Not because of bad palnning, hitting shots i dont know how to hit or being negative, but because of things in my life (My kids are autistic and we are in a rough period as a family), that use all My mental capacity. . But I don't really care. I get to play golf with some friends. Score will be better again.

I saw one of your videos some months ago and I thought what a ****head I’m sad to say. I recently began to watch you again and I take that description back because for me…the penny dropped on so many things that you talk about. It was the series of white board videos that spoke to me - you look at it in a completely different way to all the other golf channels. Everything you say makes so much sense - how you approach golf is liberating and I can tell you that in the past couple of months, my golf has improved and I am enjoying it so much more. I basically just hit the ball now without thinking too much about the swing or putt. The psychology of golf can make or break you, lessen the pressure that you put in yourself and relieve yourself of being a non thinker on the course. Thank you for your channel, I’m sure many are understanding that golf is just a game to be enjoyed…Ive just turned 70 and my enjoyment playing golf now is the best it has been since I was a young whippersnapper hitting the ball miles. When the penny drops it frees you up to just play what is in front of you and gets you planning your game more.

Coach Matty, I am passing this video along to my 15-year-old golfer Son. "He is one of those that hates losing more than he loves winning; super competitive and critical on himself, but very humble at the same time..." Crazy thing is: When he was boxing, it helped him the most to Get Out of His Own Way! It complimented & transferred to all the other sports he played. You cannot get down on yourself when sparring because you will get your Head Knocked off! Shout Out to: Coach Greg K. (New Castle California Ringside Gym) for helping instill this into my Boy. However, now at his current age, sometimes he needs to hear or be reminded with this type of advice from someone besides his Pop's... Thank you for taking the time to produce this video Coach Matt! It is SPOT-ON knowledge & guidance for my young cub!!

Matt, I'm getting into golf after my wife told me she wants to fund a set of clubs for my 40th later this year. I play one round every 18-24 months and am never the worst in my group, but I always enjoy the people. As someone who habitually gets in their way in life already with perfectionist tendencies (and therefore procrastinatory avoidance!), stumbling across the Way of the Playa has been super important before I even get to my first real 18 holes. I am excited at the prospect of practicing with purpose because I know I'll have more time for that so I can honour the intention of my present. I'm not worrying about breaking 100, or 90, I'm simply breaking in :)

I have been trying to explain your concept to my son who hits it a mile but is soooo wayward his scores were awful, he' used to say "Dad, leave me alone FFS" smash his driver 280 or so but almost always into the crap, but now he's listening and following the simple steps and starting to play well and using his head as opposed to his ego. Another truly helpful video - unlike most of what you see in KZfaq videos. All of our game plans should be to think before each shot "WWMS" (what would Matt say) and then do that. Find the positive thought, tell yourself you can make that shot, and then let your body make the swing. So simple. Play the game you have and play it smartly! Thank you Matt.

I have burned through six of these lessons so far, and put in roughly 45 minutes training at the driving range every day, this includes going to the short range practice areas, as well as some putting. Prior to any lessons, I would shoot well over 100. Shot 85 for the first time in my life on my home course after! The largest advantage I've gained was setting par for my course plus one for each hole ⛳ totally removes the pressure!

I just broke (the equivalent of) 100 at a 9 hole course for the first time. I just used what I learned on the channel. Waiting for my tee time I saw many golfers tee off on the first hole cold with their drivers and go OB several balls in a row. I walked up with my confidential 5 wood, and hit a relatively poor shot that was short but still in the fairway. That left me 2 easy iron shots onto the green and the confidentiality kept growing from there. Easy game.

I'm none of these things - shot 45 over 9 holes for the first time this week after taking your advise about putting practice (what a difference), but I praise myself when I make a good shot and don't berate myself when I don't - audibly recognising "that was a tough shot", etc. Hopefully it rubs off on her too :). Played my first round since I’ve started watching your videos. First time I haven’t been close enough to OB to need to hit a provaginal ball. Thanks boyfriend for your sagedom.

Good video and advice. Do you think keeping stats on oneself is a good idea? Like how many putts. Greens in reg. Fairways in reg. Stuff like that. i have used the GHIN app which allows me to add stats like that per hole and I can see my percentage on those things. I believe it has helped me as I have seen where I have been poor, getting in play off the tee, and now I am more consistant than I was months ago. My putting is quite good, as in I have over 90 percent 2 putts or better. And now the part of my game that I need to work on to get better is getting up and down more often when I miss the green. Thanks for your videos. I feel they have given me good advice and things to think about.

I played a new to me course today and my first time on the course this year, shot an 87. Half the time I was thinking how would Matty boom boom approach this, the other half I was thinking “hulk smash” or “I can get through/over these trees”. My putter, PW, 8 iron, hybrid 3 and 3 wood were my confidential clubs and my driver, LW, and 5 iron were not. My iron distancé was absolutely on point even though my aim was not. My most notable 100% confidential shot was a 240 yard 3 wood fade that hugged the dogleg right and set me up with a 40 yard pitch in a perfect lie. I was able to put that one inside 8 feet. I’m going to play again next week and try to stick with complete confidentiality and maybe break 80.

This guy perfectly describes the way I have been playing all my life (73 yrs. old) and have not been able to improve. I want to play like he suggests. Makes alot of sense.

I’m 74 and try to follow the WOTP. I’m successful most of the time. I do a lot of research on how to get better. Matty Boom Boom is the best guide out there.

Howzit boetfriend. I don't have my breaking 80 story yet, but I thought I'd emphasise just how stress free my last round was. I shot an 83, like I've done often, but without using my driver or hybrid. No penalties, no trees, and finished with the ball I started with. I walked off the course waaay happier than usual. What ruined me was actually the par 3s ffs!
