The Gomati Residence, designed by SPASM, is a 10,500 ft² home situated in Malavli, India. Built in 2016, this house replaces an unfit structure with a design that deeply respects and integrates with its natural surroundings. The design retains and recycles debris from the previous building, creating a mound that becomes a central element of the landscape.
Sleeping areas are arranged around existing trees at ground level, providing a cool and serene environment. The main living space, a pavilion-like structure, is positioned on the upper level, facing north to overlook mature trees. The use of Blue Gray Kotah stone throughout the house ensures durability against the region's harsh climate, while white Indian Bhanswara marble adorns the bath spaces.
The spatial layout encourages a connection with the elements, making the residents acutely aware of the changing light and weather. Gomati, named in memory of the client’s mother, offers a unique living experience where the family can enjoy the rain, cool breezes, and natural beauty, encapsulated within a thoughtfully designed architectural marvel.
