@Ирина Мирская all of the events leading up to that moment make you want to get excited that gon got stronger. He is going through extreme grief and was about to be killed by pitou. In that moment gon forsook his own life out of sadness. This scene is more tragic than it is epic for me. But I can sympathize with why people needed it to be cool.

Gon and Meruem switched roles. At the start Gon was caring and nice. At Kings start he was ruthless and fueled by hate for people/rage. At Gon's end he was fueled by Kite's death/wanting to kill Pitou. Meruem's end he wanted to spend time with the one he loves and realized people arn't so bad. This is a legit example of what would happen if you put a shonen protagonist in a cruel, harsh, and unforgivable world...
