Thanks to Bluetti, I got the perfect opportunity to talk about recharging your ebike's battery while you're camping or otherwise off-grid. This video covers how big of a power station, or solar generator you will need and how much solar is enough for the ebike that you have. Things to think about before heading out to your favorite campsite or boondocking spot with your electric bike.
The Bluetti EB55 power station starts at only $399 on prime sale day from 12th July to 13th July: shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1906664&u=2791966&m=118852&urllink=&afftrack=

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Great video. I do the same thing when camping, with my Bluetti EB70s and my 52v 8ah battery. I even have used my smallest Bluetti, the AC30 out on the trail by bringing it along on my rack. It’s only 10 pounds and small enough it fits on my bike rack perfectly. I usually have 20-30% left on the battery when I get back from riding. I recharge my power station while I’m out riding and then recharge the e-bike battery when I get back to camp. Since I Boondock mostly, I rely on my Bluetti’s! 😊

I was finally brave enough and feeling good enough that I test drove my new ebike. I rode a little over 3 miles into our small town... picked up some supplies I need... some parts for the spare batteries I'm making for it. I'm not really supposed to be doing anything for a couple more months. My surgeon won't even let me get massage, heat and stim physical therapy yet. He said I'm supposed to wait twelve weeks after my spinal surgery first so we can make sure the fusion has taken. It's so good to get out of that electric wheelchair and my crutches after being crippled for almost a year and a half due to the first lumbar fusion surgery. This revision surgery done in May is fantastic. I don't have that mind bending extreme pain shooting instant lightning bolts through my body anymore. I have just the normal pain related to surgery. It's still a lot of pain... but it's a thousand times less pain than I had from the first surgery. First time riding, started 100% charged. A little over 6 miles round trip... mostly level ground. 1,500w motor and took it down to 70% charge remaining when I got back home. (This was using only the stock battery that came with my bike.) It has both front and rear shocks, but I'd like to get one of those shock absorber seats. Where did you get yours and what did it set you back for it? I'd also like to change my mechanical disc brakes to hydraulic brakes. Do you have any recommendations as to where might be a good place to get my parts and hopefully at a reasonable price??? Thanks and keep up the good work. I'm also getting ready to convert my cargo trailer into a camper in the front section. I already have a lot of what I need for my build.

Take it easy Nomad and don't rush the healing process so that you can make a full recovery. The seat post that I showed in my recent video is a LOT better and smoother than the ones that just feature a spring in the seatpost tube. I got mine from Magicycle, but you can find them on Amazon (like this one: amzn.to/3O06sDk). Here's a brake kit: amzn.to/3c9kqoU The least expensive place to buy these things is through Alibaba, if you don't mind the wait, which could be a month or so.

As always, awesome video! For giggles, the brick charger that comes with the e-bike plugs in to the bike's battery plug which is DC then the brick charger internally converts it to a 120 AC standard plug correct? Just like our laptops and other electronics. Just curious, could the e-bike manufacturers come out with a charger that stays DC all the way through up to the Bluetti? The reason I'm asking is because it makes sense that when you use the Bluetti's or any portable power bank's AC output, it will consume more energy due through the conversion process? Asking for a friend 😎
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 жыл бұрын
Your friend is a smart guy! They certainly could make a charger like that and I wish they would, but the power from the sun is free so I don't mind this set-up being a little inefficient.
@jwagnermail
@jwagnermail 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they could make a device that converts the 12V from a power station to the 48v used by the bike. But there are power loss factors during that conversion, just like the conversion loss when the power station converts to 120v. I doubt if it would be worth the expense of a device that would be low production, not many people would buy it. Also, ebikes have different voltages, so the device would need to be matched to your bike. I think this would be more of a DIY project for people with electronic design experience.

@@gonagain I meant to say distance not speed 9n cruse control. From what I understand the 750 watt Super Cruiser d9es a good job, however, there are some bikes with larger battery banks that can really haul as well...b7t man those are expensive and 8 don't think the big bucket cargo bikes will offroad..there is one bike that can haul and got the distance but for 18,000 usndollars..that is not cheap...and like all machines, they will sooner or later need parts, if a rear hub motor fails that a 369 dollar component, thankfully that is super rare to have happen. 8 hope you can find a bike that fits your budget and does what you jeed it to do. ..my Santa Monica crusier will haul 60 lbs of food...in Paniers and and while using a back pack..but it drains the battery fast lol.

An mppt regulator is perfectly capable of managing the charge of the e-bike battery, the maximum voltage must be set at 54.6 volts, the BMS takes care of balancing and charging, This way you waste a lot of energy in three different conversions, dc-dc-ac-dc

MPPT's automatically shut off at the set voltage and would allow you to charge w/o the burden of carrying an inverter and the original charging brick, no? And you save about $1,500 which is the price of a budget ebike. Inverter seems good for other applications but definitely not for ebikes as you've displayed here. I can appreciate that there are other applications for the inverter, but charging a $950 bike with a $1,500 inverter doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense and this doesn't even include the cost of the solar panels. A compact setup would cost about $500 with 150w solar panels. Nice that you can do what you've shown, but definitely not for practical use.
@gonagain
@gonagain Жыл бұрын
So you're suggesting charging a $600 ebike battery with a homemade charging system. Very few people have the ability to make a system like what you're referring to but most people who go camping these days bring a power station with them to charge their phones and run their refrigeration. It's the safest way to charge an expensive ebike battery also without taking the chance of frying it with a homemade setup. By the way, what you're suggesting would also void the warranty.

That doesn't work out as well as you would think. For one thing, it only charges while you're coasting, like down a hill, and other times you wouldn't want the generator to slow you down just because you stopped pedaling. I think it's better without that feature.

What about with the power station is plugged in securely connected on either a little trailer or on the tail at the back while riding, I have a python Metro, only a 250 W, 36 V E bike and I’ve tested it while plugged into the mains in town and will still work whilst charging but would that be dangerous? Or would that extend the mileage you get on a charge.
