a lot of peoples' criticism of this movie is "why did she have to do that? why didn't she just divorce him? yadda yadda?" like she says it herself when she says "he ruins my life and ends up happier than ever? he doesn't get to win." and she's so right. her husband is an absolute fuckhead who destroyed her life. why should she just leave him and give him everything he wants which is, ostensibly, for her to leave without him having to even do the emotional labour of initiating a divorce? additionally, I think a lot of millennial women really identified with the trope of "women having to play roles". we were raised by our boomer moms to be everything to everyone, and unlike our male partners, we don't just get to let the character drop once we're married.

That’s why I love the story so much. Gillian Flynn does such an incredible job of navigating the modern dating world and expectations of each gender in a heteronormative relationship, weaving into the story some relevant real life events (the 2008 economic crisis) without going into the clichés. It’s all so surprising yet makes so much sense. Like, yeah, ruin his life (though I wouldn’t have gone through with the very last part of her plan of jumping in the water with rocks so her body could be found - that’s when the truly unhinged comes into play 😂) the same way he ruined yours. Wasting her prime years for dating, drying up her bank account, to then divorce her and leave her with nothing? Nah, put him in prison. I love Amy, even though her streak of crazy is particularly dark 😂 Highly recommend checking out her other two books, Dark Places (and movie adaptation) and Sharp Objects (and series adaptation). Both feature incredibly complex dynamics of the good ole American life!

@@stutter_box I have a LOT of time for Amy. I was a little surprised at the rhetoric around the novel wondering if it was feminist or not when to me it was like... aggressively feminist, and in many ways an exploration into the pressure society puts on women and the excuses it makes for men. possibly/probably ahead of its time honestly. I also read Sharp Objects, it was a banger! it was so good I read it in like an evening, which happened to be New Year's Eve and I told my colleagues as the ski lodge I was working at "nope sorry can't drink gotta finish this book" lol good life decision that.
