The sign off from that commentary from Las Vegas in 2011 makes me tear up every time: "(...) many people ask me, why I always sign off 'til we meet again,' because 'goodbye' is always so final... Goodbye Dan Wheldon," 😢

@@youhitmeunderyella9504 What made it even harder for me personally, not just for the fact that he was a Brit like me, but not long after that, I watched live as Moto GP Rider Marco Simoncelli had a freak accident that left him run over by his fellow riders Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards, on lap 2 of the MotoGP race in Malaysia. The image of his helmet ripped from his head, rolling along the grass as his lifeless body lay sprawled on the race track was haunting. Simoncelli died less than an hour later from severe head and chest injuries. Like the Indycar situation in Las Vegas, the MotoGP race in Malaysia 2011 officially never happened as the race never restarted. The nice thing is though, in the wishes of his father, when the field gathered for the finale in Valencia, Spain, they paid tribute to him with a minute's noise

@@DinsdalePiranha67 Dan Wheldon's death was likely the catalyst for Indycar phasing oval tracks out. All that's left are IMS, Nashville, and Texas. There's talk of taking Nashville and Texas off the circuit next year, leaving IMS as the only oval remaining, likely solely for tradition's sake. I do not blame Indycar for doing this as it's become clear how dangerous oval racing is for Indycar drivers, even if it comes at the cost of track variety. Wheldon's tragic death was just as dramatic of a turning point for Indycar the way Dale Earnhardt's death was for NASCAR, if not even more so.

Dan Wheldon was my favorite IndyCar driver. I was a fan of his at the age of 7. I never got into IndyCar until i heard the name Dan Wheldon. From 2003 to 2011 he was my favorite driver. Even with him being part time in '11 he was still my favorite. Watching Vegas was hell for me seeing my hero die in front of my eyes. Finishing my freshman year of high school was hell. I just could never focus, I was in a fog that entire year after Dan died. It was the reason why i chose the #7 for baseball. I wanted a piece of Dan with me since i couldn't do 77. My last pitching appearance my freshman year I tipped my cap and wore it backwards while being carried off the field. My coach asked me why I did that. I simply said. I lost my hero in October. This one was for him. I wore the 7 again for my sophomore year of soccer and wore 10 my sophomore year of basketball. Our first game my sophomore season. I hit 2 threes and each time i held four fingers to my heart while going back on defense and i remember mouthing. This is for you Dan. My last year of being able to play basketball i wore the number 15. You subtract the 5 from 1 you get Dan's number 4. I was named captain that season because i showed a lot of heart and I remember my coach pulling me aside and saying your a spitting image of your hero and i started crying. I cried before our warmups cause thats when he had told me that. The biggest three pointer i hit that season was from past half court. I made it expecting to be pulled from the game, as soon as i made it my eyes got the water works and my coach knew how much that three meant to me. My last year of playing baseball i wore the #4. I just knew that it was time to do something special. I did. I hit my first ever triple that season and as soon as i touched 3rd base i tipped my helmet off and pointed it to the sky and mouth Dan. This is for you. 12 years later the pain of missing you continues to break my heart. I wish you were still here each and everyday. God speed lionheart 😢

Wheldon's 2011 Indy 500 win made me so happy after finishing 2nd the last two years at Indianapolis. plus the fact he no longer had a full time ride which was perplexing. so when Las Vegas came around I was pretty happy that got a full time gig. the crash during the race is one of the worst motorsport wrecks I've ever seen. we were lucky there weren't more casualties most notably Will Power and another driver who went airborne. Power's car luckily went bottom first into the fence not cockpit first like Dan's. as time loomed on before the announcement I got more nervous that what we we're all fearing was true. the news broke I cried as we lost a great soul in Danny Boy and his family lost a great man...

I was 8 years old when Dan's crash happened. I never saw it live, but the night after the race, my mom showed me a bunch of videos/pictures of it on Facebook. At the time I didn't really have the capacity to understand just what it was that I had watched and basically went "Oh well that's sad." As time went on I began to realize just how horrifying and tragic the whole ordeal really was. A few months ago I went back and watched some of the races from 2011. I really liked the commentary he did for Versus. He always had lots of really good insight and was great at explaining what might be going through the driver's heads. Had he not passed away I feel like Dan would've gone down a similar path to Townsend Bell, becoming an Indy 500 ringer, and a broadcaster for NBC.

What a rollercoaster 2011 was. To this day that is still my favorite Indy 500. I remember my friend and I yelling “who won” because we couldn’t tell from our seats if JR had crossed the line first; to JR’s credit, after he smacked the wall, he put the pedal down. Seeing Dan win again and for Herta was great. Then watching the Vegas wreck unfold on TV, was such a gut punch. We’re lucky we still have Will Power; he went flying too and broke his back in that crash if my memory is correct. I cried like a baby watching the funeral the next day. He was so versatile; what a loss for motor sports. As others have pointed out, loosing Simoncelli the next week was another tragedy. Two fun loving guys who were so fun to watch. I miss them both. Thanks for this video, it’s surprisingly still so raw after 10 years. I hope the families of Dan and Marco have found peace.

When I see Dan's car hitting the fence in slow motion, my gut turns, just seeing his life flash right before him, very haunting, very sad, and we all lost a truly great and talented driver, but also a selfless, kindhearted man. RIP Dan.

10 years later on the same day. NASCAR had a cup race at Las Vegas. A freak accident occurred in the same turn. A car lost a wheel (mechanical failure), went airborne, and landed on top of the wall. It was exactly the same spot were they predicted Dan Weldon's head hit the catch fence pole. I remember Dan Weldon's crash everyday. It was one of the most saddest moments in racing history Rest in Peace Dan Weldon

I'm 36 yrs old. I've been watching all forms of motorsports since I was 5. I vividly remember Senna's crash, J.D. McDuffie at Watkins Glen, Tony Roper's fatal NASCAR Truck Series crash, Blaise Alexander's ARCA crash, Dale Sr. in 2001, and Paul Dana at Homestead. The level of nausea I felt after witnessing the Wheldon crash live was unmatched. I knew from the moment he impacted the fence and the fireball broke out that we needed a big BIG miracle to happen. Unfortunately we didn't get one that day. I wasn't a big fan of his, but I respect every person who has the guts to strap in to the cockpit and take the risk. We lost a VERY good representative of the sport that day. I for one miss his presence.

I will never forget being at my friend's house and going on the computer to espn and seeing there in the front page with pictures of the accident: "DAN WHELDON DIES". Although i wasn't into Indycar, the name Dan Wheldon is one I've heard prominently. It was sad. He seemed like a very cheery, nice guy, and talented too. He is missed.

I don't know if it was common knowledge after the accident, but while Dan was a part timer in the 2011 season, he had already signed a contract to replace Danica in the GoDaddy car for the 2012 season back with Andretti. It was going to be officially announced after the race, however for those in the know, the secret was already out prior to the race. He was a fantastic ambassador for the sport, even more off the track than on the track. It seemed like anytime I walked down the pit lane, if he wasn't in his car, he was out on the fence signing autographs, or posing for pictures with little kids. Easily one of the greatest personalities that racing has ever seen, and he is greatly missed.

Beautiful tribute. I cant believe its been that long. One thing you may not know was he was signed to take over Danica's ride the next season at Andretti Autosport as she was beginning to transition to Nascar. He would have had the second coming of his career. Mayor Hinch took that seat and was competitive as were all the Andretti cars in the car Dan helped create. RIP Lionheart.

Same here. At the time when I was only 9, I didn't think it was possible for a racing driver to die in that era. Safety was just too good, I thought to myself. A cruel, cruel dose of reality hit me like a bullet when I realized that I had just watched an IndyCar icon die right in front of me. There's been a lot of terrible fatalities in Indy, but with this season in particular, and with this driver and his special story, I'd argue this is the 2001 Daytona of IndyCar - the darkest day.

I didn't watch this race on TV, but I still remember the day it happened. I was at Laguna Seca working as a corner marshal for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion. I noticed one of the other marshals looked very upset, and that she had made a phone call to someone (I heard her say that person's name - it was someone else I knew). This was during lunch, and as we were getting ready to return to our stations, I asked her if she was okay. She told me she'd heard reports of a massive accident during the IRL race at Las Vegas, and that a "Code 5" had been called. I later found out that Dan Wheldon had been one of the drivers involved, but I didn't ask for any more details. At the end of the day, someone else I knew asked me if I'd heard about that wreck, and I mentioned that I'd heard Wheldon had been transported from the track. She replied, "He didn't survive the crash." After returning home, I looked up video of the incident. I could not get to the end of the clip - it was just so horrific at the time. To date, I can still count on one hand the number of times I've watched footage of this crash. While I never knew Dan Wheldon personally, and for that matter had never even met him, us folks involved in racing - whether as drivers, crew, officials, or whatever - tend to regard each other as family. His loss was one that affected me deeply.

2011 was the first year I became fully invested in Indycar. I was 16 when the Vegas crash happened, and watching all that took place there on live tv was a surreal moment. The '10s in general were (or at least should be) sobering years for motorsport fans in terms of injuries and fatalities. Weldon's passing in 2011, Jules Bianchi's crash in 2014 and succoming to his injuries in 2015, Justin Wilson's passing in 2015 and Hinchcliff's injury the same year, Robert Wickens becoming paraplegic in 2018, Anthoine Hubert's passing in 2019, and Newman's head injury in 2020, as well as others i'm forgetting. If these aren't tells of how dangerous motorsports /still/ is, idk what is.
