GWTW is made of up characters with blood in their veins. Margaret Mitchell told the truth about women, men, blacks, yankees and the pressures of modern life stealing your soul against your heritage and your people. Scarlett had gumption and the book sold us on that quality as the driving force of survival. She inherently knew the depth of her own greed and I believe she sought out Ashley to tame her wild Irish soul as her mother had to Gerald. To her mind he brought dignity and redemption. Her refusal to accept that loss was the same blinding force that got her through the war and reconstruction. Melanie understood that Scarlett's gumption was necessary and she forgave her everything because they needed her and she trusted Ashley's honor. It is a great story.

Good thoughtful review...not sure I'll ever tackle it though. But at least I've seen the movie...you should definitely check it out.

I can’t read this book. The wording used I can’t understand the way they talk.

Great review! My feelings were similarly mixed and I think I’m going to drop my original rating a bit. The further I get the more I realize I prefer Vanity Fair. But Scarlett and Rhett were certainly fascinating!

It was interesting but I wouldn't describe the reading experience as 'fun' exactly. Even though Vanity Fair was also very long, I read that one much quicker. I think Scarlett is a better character than Becky, however. She feels more fully realized IMO.

@@jackiereadsandwrites They are definitely not fun reads. Scarlett is definitely better drawn than Becky, but I appreciate that Becky is less hypocritical than Scarlett. :)
