#BoatLife #Sailboat #Refit
We're going loopy and it's not the diesel fumes. The days are all starting to blur together, but progress is being made!
Our goal this week is to get the boat livable again. We love our little bungalow away from it all, but we're ready to really make it home. Which means cleaning, servicing, replacing, and more cleaning (did I mention cleaning?!?). Because after a year of sitting all alone in tropical conditions, we have leaky hatches, corroded electronics, and a boat full of mold.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

To combat mould.... a quarter of a teaspoon of Oil of Cloves to one litre of liquid (or approx 33 fluid ounces). It smells strong, but Oil of cloves kills mould spores. From a book of "how to clean anything" written by a wonderful woman who is a curator... she's KNOWS her stuff!!

10 years ago there were 2 young men working on the crew I ran that were from Tonga. They were fixing airplanes and were very nice men. Because meds have wiped my memory I cannot remember their names. But if you run across someone who was working in Arizona 10 years ago tell them their old boss says hi. I wish I could remember their names or even which island. I am happy to see you are making progress. Soon your little home will be ready. Be safe!

You are serving up a very large dish of boat owners reality and in usual Wynn fashion, making it entertaining and fun, “to make the medicine go down.”. I wonder how many wannabes are going to change their minds when they see just how much effort it takes to keep a boat clean and maintained. Great job guys. Hopefully you’ll be able to whittle the mountain down to size without any more major repair surprises.🙏🥰👍👍

Good news. Here in Australia we had no Covid cases or deaths over the weekend. That’s for the whole country. We’ve even had national football grand finals with half full stadiums last weekend. New Zealand is far more advanced with full stadiums at sporting events and life pretty much back to normal. The boarders have opened between our two countries and we are talking about opening up to Pacific neighbours. So...maybe order your tanks here and get them delivered? It could be worse you could be in the USA when the sequel to the Civil War premieres on Tuesday. I believe the main actor is saying it will be huge and great for his ratings.

I bet you guys know it already, but aluminum tanks can be pressurized to find if they are leaking and where. That is the typical procedure after building a fuel tank for a kit airplane-a good way to find out. Also, I may have missed it, but is there nobody who could weld, and do a repair that way until you can get new tanks?

So we have been cleaning for what feels like forever as the boat was sitting in a very busy & dusty shipyard for nearly 2 years. We also wanted to let you know that we have the same fans and we had them fixed at a little computer repair shop for 10 bucks a pop and they work great again so try to see if you can find a repair shop!!

I live in an apartment that would be plagued by ants and other creepy crawlers from neighbors, they would travel under the drywall and get everywhere. FYI - mold is really toxic and can make you very sick. A simple thing to do, after you clean, is use an ozone generator. The ozone will kill the mold that you cannot see. You don't want to breathe the ozone as long term exposure will damage your lungs. What I do is: turn on the generator. Set it to run for 6-8 hours. Close up the room, boat, whatever, and leave for the day. I air it out when I get back. If things are pretty bad I might do two days in a row. Be healthy, and thanks for including us in your adventures.

Just a hint for ya, @14:32, After you start the chisels under the lip, drip some solvent on the crack the chisels make, let the solvent do the work, it will soak along the crack using capillary action. Just keep steady pressure with the chisels. Much easier than muscling the parts off. Keep up the good work, it's lookin good.

The really scary thing is all that mildew and mold you see on the surfaces is also on the parts you cant see... You wipe it off of a panel but you know that the other side of that panel or the floor board, is covered in it. I owned a 33 year old boat in South Florida.. I can tell you all about mold and mildew.

Someone once said that any project you would do on land to multiply the time required by 3 if you're doing it on a boat. It took me all day to change my headsail furler from a cable to regular line. Instead of cutting the cable off with a grinder, putting some chafe protection on the drum, drilling a hole and adding some 5/16" line, I decided to take it all apart and make it an all day project. Today's task in winds blowing upward of 40 knots is engine maintenance. This should be fun while bouncing around in my tiny engine compartment.

The amount of work you guys have to do can be overwhelming to some people. There are so many boat owners that would have given up and sold out already just because of the work that had to be done. The best part of doing the work is knowing every inch of your boat is ready for sea and that you can trust it when the going gets rough. Don't compromise on anything, especially when it comes to the integrity of the hull. A leaking hatch can sink a boat! Love you guys! Fair winds and following seas!

Have you considered making a mock-up of both fuel tanks using foam board? You can cut the boards to size to match the tanks, label them, and mark where fitting/penetrations go. You can send them along with detailed photos and video of the tanks ahead and plastic tanks can be made from them and have new fuel level floats installed. They may arrive at one of your destinations and would save you so much time. They probably are dying for work. Or Leopard c Mae them for you. They probably would appreciate getting the large tank as they do not have a drawing for it and others may be in the same situation as you are.

A motor with brushes just needs the brushes unless it destroyed itself. The carbon that came out is just the brush carbon. They are a wear item like a sacrificial metal on your prop shaft. Someone local has to be able to make brushes. You should be able to get brushes for the whole boat for a few dollars. They can be cut to fit if you can't get the right size. Easy to replace.

After first use, I cover the nozzle with a little clear wrap and masking tape, squeeze a little blob out the end under the wrap and refrigerate it. It'll save you hundreds of dollars. I've been doing this with all types of caulking for 30 years, especially with 5200. Only difficulty is the competition for beer space.

I always so look forward to your Sunday morning videos. Also, I am almost always jealous of whatever it is you are doing, right now, not so much. All of your hard work will pay off though! I will soon be back to my envious viewer status!

It is good that you are taking breaks and being kind to yourselves. The project or task or chore will be there whenever you are ready. just need to pace yourself to last the whole journey. you will get to the end, one day at a time. why not cook chicken tortilla soup with tofu or something? she clearly loves it. much love.

Jason, I have those same fans stateside. I have done the same cleaning them. I have also lubed the bearing/bushings. FYI if they get to turning slow they will blow/trip the built in fuse/safety device. I have bypassed mine by twisting the legs of the fuse device together. Mine (3) have all done this. I suspect that if I fail to keep up yearly maintenance on them it will burn a winding as opposed to tripping a safety device. I made my choices you will have to make yours. I suspect your suspended fans are suffering the same fate. Thanks for the videos.

I offer you a couple of tips, 1 Whilst you have the diesel tanks out and repairing them you should think about adding drains to the very bottom corner,or lowest part of the tanks so you are able to drain the water out of the tanks as this is the cause of the corrosion and also always try and keep your diesel as full as possible as when there is an air gap, the diesel will condensate (produce water) so if at all possible a drain pipe even if the end comes out above the tank then you use your oil vacuum to suck the water from the tank then the two benefits from this are no corrosion or bacteria growth in tanks hope this can help. 2 With mould bleach only makes it so you can't see it anymore the only thing that kills mould is oil of cloves yes the same stuff you use for toothache,a few drops in a spray bottle with water, spray on let sit a couple of minutes then wipe off, it will smell like a dentist surgery for couple days but after no more mould, you can also add it to paint to make a mould proof paint. Cheers from Australia stay safe

I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m here in California and even though we’re reaching daily highs of infection and death they want us to continue opening things up. Has the lockdown completely thrown your economy for a loop yet? We haven’t heard much about England over here. I’d love to know what your guys’ experience is right now. All the love from the US ❤️🙏🏼✨
