After three months and 1200+ nautical miles sailed, we've given CURIOSITY one heck of a shakedown cruise. But as with any boat and especially a new boat, we have racked up a nice list of warranty work we need to sort out.
At this point we were a little on the fence about where to go:
Subic - The team at Asia Pacific Marine had taken such good care of us when we were there. We trust them and their work and it was only a few hundred miles away.
Cebu - HH Catamarans has recently set up a second factory here and naturally, would prefer we come to them. But they haven't finished building their dock, haul out facility or marina. So they had to verify they could actually make the haul out happen.
Join us as we say goodbye to El Nido and set sail for a boat yard. And it's as if CURIOSITY knows she's headed in for repairs. Because she starts coughing up more work to add to the list. #BoatLife
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Things We're Most Curious About...
GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

The fridge as you know is a heat-pump that pumps energy from the primary heat-exchanger side inside where the groceries are to a secondary external heat-exchanger outside the cooled space. Residential fridges are either stand-alone or integrated into kitchen closets. In the former case, the outside heat-exchanger transfers heat freely into the space the fridge is in. In the latter case, the cabinet needs an air intake at the bottom of the cabinet hiding the fridge and a chimney with exhaust at the rear of the fridge. The air being moved by heating (convection) needs to be able to go somewhere. How did they do that with your integrated boat fridge? Note that automatic defrosting on the inside (briefly?) is done by reversing the heat-pumping so a bit of warmth is put into the heat-exchanger on the inside of the fridge and this melts the ice that got condensation-frosted on it. That melted water then generally flows away to the outside of the cooled box onto the compressor (pump) where it has to evaporate during the pump's duty cycles. And this evaporation also needs airflow to happen enough. Of course, in a boat with bilge pumps, that water could equally well be guided into the bilge. But the compressor/pump needs some cooling and the outside heat exchanger certainly needs that.
@srcastic8764
@srcastic8764 Ай бұрын
In other words, if the counter or cabinet is not providing enough airflow, especially vertical airflow, it could at the least make your fridge work harder. And that “optional drain hose” is hopefully routed to your bilge or to your waste plumbing, preferably the bilge. If it’s not, you might want to get them to while it’s being warranty serviced.

Nikki with the headset is such a confident executive sailor of her new boat. Jason is a great mechanical problem solver. An awesome sailing team. Thank goodness for all of those back up engines. 1. Sails 2. Electric 3. Diesel 4. Regen from propellers 5. Could you tow with your dingy? Can you hoist the sails manually? It looks tough. If your electric wenches fail, is it sheer adrenaline that will keep you going? I'm still waiting on the dishwasher review. 😂 Blessings 🎉

Just wrote a comment of my own on this. Hopefully it is indeed just a head gasket issue and not a more sinister crack somewhere. I would have to assume it's covered under warranty but it's certainly not a good sign to have failure this early.

I'm guessing you wont see this but I'll give it a try. Different boat model/builder but same fridge and very similar issues. There is a way to reduce the time between defrost cycles. Need to enter config mode. Unfortunately I don't recall the exact steps so reach out to mnfg. This helped but in my case it was not enough. It is imperative you have sufficient ventilation behind the fridge. Despite the builder adding passive vents it has not been a solution. My next step is to add fans to the cavity behind the fridge to increase ventilation and to replace the fan on the condenser coil to something with more CFM. ( it is just a 120mm muffin fan, like on a PC) . Results are TBD. A hairdryer will reduce your down time to 10 minutes if you aim it at the fans in the lower compartment. Good Luck

There is a temperature probe in the Evap coil that tells the control board when defrost is necessary. One of the plausible theories may be that the Fridge manufacturer had slow fan speeds or no fan speed during temp satisfaction so no humid was being removed during that period and then the coil gets hit with massive humidity in cool cycle and ices the coil that coupled with fact that you are already in a high humidity enviro (No Bueno Senor) All in the name of energy conservation. Theory #2: Manufactures used to direct condensate off of evap coils to a hot gas loop pan by the compressor to evap condensate but given the fact that in the past that was a common failure point for freon leaks and now that fridge is charged with and explosive fridgerant such as propane or butane those Hot gas loop evap pans have been eliminated entirely and some times the drain lines need to be directed somewhere and often become a forgotten detail or the unknown detail and over time as that tied off tube fills up with water and it backs up in the drain pan that water will freeze on the coil. The reason more than likely they want to send you the control board is they will change the parameters to have the fans run full time which will help but doesnt solve your drain line issue. FYI if the coil probe is bad the drain line and control board mitigation will not solve your ice up issue either. AND last but not least if they didnt account for heat rejection in there cabinet design you have boiled your oil and the compressor is running restricted very much like your previous boat just on a must shorter time scale. Dont under estimate how crappy things are being made these days...

RESIDENTIAL FRIDGE user in a Class A motorhome here. It's a love/hate relationship. I am a full timer and have lived with this fridge since 2021. It's a 2014 coach. This is an honest to goodness residential Frigidaire Gallery 22 CU FT monster. Does it work great? Yes. Is it an energy hog? Also yes; 175 Ah per day out of the batteries. Of that, 75 Ah is for the defrost cycle; 50amp draw x 30 minutes every 8 hours. I've tried everything to defeat the auto defrost to no avail. It's smart enough to work around the timer I have it plugged into. Instead, I added more batteries and more solar. Now I don't have energy anxiety and I have made peace with the thing for now. BUT, when it croaks, I smaller, manual defrost 12V fridge will replace it. OH, and this sucker weighs 300lbs EMPTY. And it's installed in my big slide. (Yes, I have issues with a lot of things surrounding this fridge)

Good to see you under sail again, those sails are magnificent. Would be interesting to know what was causing the very brown water, that level of brown is not normal in such a new engine. I guess like with every new boat there is going to be something that goes a little wrong. when you think about it, you are not just living in a home, your home carries with it the entire infrastructure of a city scaled down to fit into the boat. Power electrical and for locomotion, water, sewage and it's all got to be packed into something the floats. So a lot can go wrong. I have seen a few other new boats and it seems like at least your warrantee issues are not that bad at least compared to some of the issues I have seen recently. Looking forward to you next adventure that you share with us.

About the coolant issue. It looks like a symptom of a failed head gasket. There are many coolant passages in the engine in which it flows through to keep everything from overheating, when the gasket fails, it allows the coolant to mix with the engine oil through this gap and makes the "sludge" you are talking about. That's also why so much of it has disappeared, it is more than likely combined with the engine oil or getting burned off in combustion. I have a feeling if you inspect the oil, it will look similar to a peanut butter/caramel color. As I said it's most commonly related to the gasket between the cylinder head and the engine block, but could also be other gaskets or even a small crack somewhere in the engine itself (or a number of other things). I don't know much about your engine specifically, but I would certainly avoid running it at all if possible until further diagnosis and inspection, as the coolant and engine oil are both not going to be doing their job very well if they are mixed with the other.

In the tropics fridge icing up will always be an issue due to humidity. You should set up a schedule for defrosting.

This isn't a simple, we need to defrost issue. The DFD error (and alarm that goes off every day) is letting us know there is something wrong with the circuit board and it is not automatically defrosting (which it is supposed to do). Vitafrigo is sending a new board which will hopefully fix the problem.

Finally some dive footage that puts air in my lungs. 3:25 - how does a fish with momentum manage to stop "instantly" with so little counter movement. A if it is tapping into spiritual force / electro magnetic. Dose it strike yous that the coral reefs look bland and colorless. Good to see plenty of fish.

As a temporary fix for your fridge problem, you could kill power to it periodically through the day. It sounds like you have a low refrigerant charge, hence your frosting issue.

This sail looked so relaxing!!! I have to say I'm quite jealous of Joshua getting to sail with you two!! I wish I had sailing or useful skills so I could be considered a useful person to have on board Curiosity!! LOL The extent of my useful skills would be to bring you all the chocolate, coffee, and tortilla chips you want from the States. But I'm not a bad cook. So there's that. LOL So I guess I'll just enjoy another Sunday morning with the Wynns from my comfy chair. Another great video. Thank you for taking us with you on your journeys!!!

So with all that electricity, a boat like that should have two big box store top loading refrigerator/freezers for redundancy and convenience, air cooled with perhaps a vent overboard. Defrosting boat fridges is speeded up by using a hair dryer.

Drain hole could be needing an update. Our fridge had a recall on the rubber valve that's attached to the drain whole. Rubber value was to small and would get clogged causing frost in our fridge creating issues. Changed the rubber valve and fridge was fixed for a bunch of years.

You’re spot on with the fridge problem but I doubt 2 hours will give it a full defrost. There will be an ice build up on the evaporator also this needs clearing to slow it to work properly and achieve the correct temperature. Pretty sure you will have a defrost heater or sensor failure

That engine is probably burning that coolant, or it is leaking it somewhere else in the cooling system like the heat exchanger that you mentioned in the video. not to serious atm but could b a worse leak or burn later. As long as you keep it topped up you should be able to run it no problem!! love your videos!!

The Coolant issues looks like you have either a Heat exchanger leak or a Blown Head Gasket blown between the Cylinder and the a Coolant Gallery. If the Later your engine temps will be elevated.
