Multiple CBOs have been approved by the FAA, which one is right for you?
Only three have been approved so far: Flite Test Community Association, FPV Freedom Coalition, and Academy of Model Aeronautics. Each of these has nuanced rules but this video will clear everything up for you.

I fly on private property through heavily wooded areas where an observer would not be able to see it. If that is considered dangerous then they need to find new people to set the rules. Once sensible rules are set I will be all for following them, registering and getting necessary license. Until then I just fly like I always have. Thumbs up for the video as always.

@@vonheise LOL I mean it was nice to get to know several things pilots know and I liked having much more freedom on where to fly for having it. For my Part 107 I watched a youtube video from Tony and Chelsea Northrup's channel covering it, did a free flashcard phone app, and passed with a 90-something. Majority of my test, around 70% of the test, was reading aeronautical charts for my area and listing what was there, what class of airspace were you in and what was the floor and/or ceiling in that tier, what were some tower radio communication signals, and could you fly a drone there. Some of the questions I knew the answers because of skydiving, but I think there was only 1 I'd never come across that had to do with plane lift, drag, and angle.

AMA has been messing up really big for years with all the "Drone" stuff ramping up over the past decade. I hope this CBO thing gets more clubs away from requiring AMA Membership. Making people pay in to a group that has not really provided much back to the community for a long time. The AMA would have so much more support if they had been the ones to sue the FAA instead of RDQ. The AMA requiring membership for anything that is listed in their CBO rules was something we where all worried about and something that was supposed to not be allowed. The CBO rules is supposed to be very separate from AMA by laws and membership rules.

I agree a lot of regulation, but then you have to consider that there are a lot of drone flyers who have done stupid things and even have jeopardized others lives. Great info and comparison, Greg. Always enjoy your info and glad I'm 107 licensed through your course. Maybe I am misunderstanding something. Most of the CBO guidelines seem similar. However, if one section doesn't work for someone, they can just work under a different one. In other words, if I don't like the speed limit on one road, I can find another set of rules that has a different speed limit. It seems to defeat the purpose of us all operating under the same rules. Am I missing something?
@PilotInstitute
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын
I think your comment definitely has merit. I think the idea here is that there's a basic set of rules, and then an additional set of guidelines (via CBOs) for specific type of drone operations. I don't think it's necessarily the same as a different "speed limit" but I see it more as different rules depending if you're driving a car vs driving a truck.

I'm a little uncomfortable with the fact that we are being held legally responsible to follow the guidelines of organizations that do not make laws. Having recently passed the Part 107, can I just tell any official, if asked, that I'm just trying to capture some footage with the hopes of making some money, even though I'm not on a "job"?

You can fly recreationally under part 107 so by all means, follow part 107 for all your flights, I certainly do.

Are we going to be locked into using only one of three CBOs? Flying a camera drone is different than FPV, or fixed wing, and IMO should have different guidelines.

Our guess is that there might be a few more CBO applications in review based on the ID numbers we have seen. AMA was application #1, FPVFC was application #2, FTCA was application #8.

A radio-controlled aircraft 250 grams ( ~0.55 pounds ) and heavier must be registered with the FAA to fly, even recreationally?! Or are these the 55 pound, and heavier, aircraft?

@@PilotInstitute Redundancy, some boneheads need to be told over and over again how to be safe. Most of the people that will be involved in regulating and enforcement are unlikely to be qualified pilots. Blowhard politicians are like, "we can make as much wind with our mouths as the drones do" This is why so many people will go sub250g with events indoors and the FAA and the Karens can eat at Joes Crotch Shack

The AMA not only offers you membership and locations to fly safely. Once you pay for your membership you have insurance coverage for any mishaps that may occur. That being said, since fixed wings aircraft are mostly powered by combustion engines and carry fuel on them it is understandable that flying over an occupied building is prohibited. It is not the same to hit a house with an electric quad than with a fixed wing loaded with either nitromethane or jet fuel. I fly fixed wings for the past 28 years, and a few years ago started flying drones and I got my 107. So it is understandable going back to the AMA issue that since they insure you, you have to comply. By the way the fee is only $75.00 paid once a year. Last time I checked it covered $2,500 000.

For the most part, CBO is a joke and uninforcable. Unless they somehow manage to make it a part of your ability to launch don't see how it matters. Just print out all the CBO's guidelines, keep them in your bag and if someone asks, just pull out one that meets your current situation. But, honestly, other then FAA agents who is going to ask?

.The first AMA rule shown deals with free flight (non radio controlled) models. Don't mix your aircraft!!!! VLOS assistance are to be beside the pilot, not a long distance from them. This is a wrong assumption. AMA membership is not required to follow their rules of safe flying. Don't confuse the issue. Any exceptional fees that might be charged are part of the liability insurance plan that comes with membership in the organization. Do the other groups have insurance for it's followers? If not I think that you motivations are suspect when explaining the AMA. I support your right to fly, just wish you would be honest about it.
@PilotInstitute
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын
No confusion here. The FAA is clear that access to guidelines MUST be free. If you charge a fee, that's not free. Insurance is completely different here and is not the fee we are referring to. Membership is allowed to those who want to use private AMA facilities, that's not what we are talking about here.
