In this video, I answer a question that I often hear from vocal students: Why is it that some days I can sing well, and others I just can't seem to sing at all?
Good Days And Bad Days Of Singing - Why? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy 4K
Have you ever had a bad hair day?
Have you ever had a good hair day?
Have you ever been driving and sometimes it just seems like you hit all the red lights?
Have you ever been driving and it feels like luck is on your side and you hit all the green lights?
Or do you sometimes wake up and feel like getting out of bed is the last thing you want to do? While other times, probably after your second cup of morning java, you feel ready to take on the world?
Often times people feel like this about their singing voice.
But consistency is king.
Practicing CORRECTLY with consistency.
You want to be so on your game that your 70% is better than most people's 100% and know this with confidence.
After being harangued by a reporter who told him "Wow - Lucky Shot!", legendary golf pro Arnold Palmer once said: "You know, I have been playing this game for 35 years, and the more I play it, the luckier I get!"
Let that be a lesson to all of us from the masters who have gone before us.
Yes, it is true! The voice can be finicky, and even fragile at times, but it is a muscle (actually a group of muscles) and the more we condition it correctly, the more we will turn our "bad days" into "GREAT DAYS" of singing!
I hope this video will help you on your singing journey.
Great singing to all!

That came along at the right time. I also would add that motivation is a key factor, getting in the zone can be hard at times.

Thank you for this Ken, I thought I was a little crazy thinking this was happening. At times I’m feeling like I’m a complete beginner and struggle with typically easy things. But as a former competitive bodybuilder, the consistency factors make complete sense. I tend to practice my singing at night, I will immediately notice if I haven’t been consistent on my hydration. Warm ups are also more difficult. I’d also imagine you could go overboard with singing, just like you can overtrain in the gym, so I give myself a break. But yes, consistency is key. Thanks again for everything!

Not only does the warm water help in the shower, the acoustics in the bathroom make it easier to hear yourself and match frequency like a tuning fork. I've also noticed as a male when I sing female songs I nail those better with my own voice because with male vocalist songs I find myself trying to sound like the dude singing.

This applies to almost everything in life. Like you said you can help improve consistency but ultimately there are too many variables to completely eliminate bad days. For example maybe you have a virus that isn't bad enough to make you sick but is bad enough to make you feel a bit off. It's also important people don't beat themselves up over off days like that when they happen. Sometimes you need to rest and try again later.

Hey, Ken! Can you do a video comprised of ONLY vocal exercises. Like (for example) a 20 minute video that has vocal exercises that you see fit for us to do every single day and when we start them we do them back to back or throughout the day. Like what should the vocal exercising in a day look like(I know it can vary for ppl and for what they are trying to reach but if you could try we would appreciate it a lot). Even if you cannot it's okay cause what you're doing is already GREAT. I love you and thank you.❤

you could comment on Opeth's vocals in songs where he changes the clean vocal to the throaty one like in the song Reverie/Harlequin Forest. Thank you, I follow your channel and I love your analysis.

Hi Ken - really appreciate how much time and energy you put into your teaching videos, I have learned a HUGE amount from you over the years. I have a question that you may or may not be able to answer but I'd appreciate any advice you have. I'm in my mid 50's, have a regular day job, but I started doing voiceover work as a hobby about ten years ago and since then I've been able to do some corporate/commercial and videogame voiceovers. Now the problem - I'm British, and I have some very bad crowding of my upper front teeth that I have never been able to afford to fix through orthodontics. This results in a lot of gaps and spaces that result in lisping sounds if I don't control it. What I typically do is press my tongue to the top of my soft palate just above my central front teeth so I can completely close off the airspace for "t" and "th" sounds. The problem is that there's not really a workaround for "s", "sh", and "ish" sounds air has to pass the front teeth. In my case, that results in all "s" type sounds having a "lispy" quality. As the master of mouth shapes, any advice for how to make "s" sounds differently? Thanks man!

Hello Ken! How have you been? Do you have any tips or training for singing in the correct tempo of the music? My biggest issue is rhythm and timing; I have a lot of difficulty with music when we have to start singing before the downbeat or if it's necessary to delay a bit to enter the right tempo. Thank you!!

I can't practice at the exactly same time zone everyday because of my work shift changing stuff....so I spend 20 mins at day and 20 mins at night at the same day so I can have 2 time zones....but don't know if that works?

Ken i got a question about breathing and abdomen. My teacher says we have to push abdomen out(ABS muscles) to control the diapraghm from moving upwards, i feel the abdomen sucking in during exhalation giving me the strenght to sing. If i keep abdomen outwards(like keeping an inhalation state all the time, even when exhaling) i get that baritonal-bass sound that's somewhat weak, and on the next inhale i probably fuck It up, pulling in to breath.(Reverse respiration). As u stated many times, our body naturally pulls in to exhale/push out to inhale, therefore i get a Little bit mad. All i wanna know Is that, do i have to fight that pulling sensation keeping the inhalation state or do i have to cope with It? Teacher wanna keep the diapraghm down, in "Belcanto" they talk about helping the diapraghm to rise up, once Is locked down from our inhalation we Need to "support" his rise(the pulling in). Man Sorry for the question, though i watched all your videos i Need to know the Truth. What u Say about diapraghm makes sense, but my teacher Is neglecting the urge to pull in, She want me to push out as i sing, and that's what i did. We May all agree about opening the muscles(expanding) during inhalation(hence contracting diapraghm) but there Is so much confusion about exalathion that i May get paranoid. Hope u can help me, have a good day.
