At the 1988 National Day Rally, then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew called on Singaporeans to support and work with the next generation of leaders led by Mr Goh Chok Tong in order for the country to continue progressing. He also highlighted the traits that make a good minister, which goes beyond "kissing babies" and having "endless" dialogue sessions, he said. Watch an excerpt from his speech on Aug 14, 1988.

Wat makes LKY a good leader? 1) precise, firm decisions...never sway away from foreign adversaries.... 2) like a good conductor of an orchestra, clear, firm n precise....he even walked the ground to check n inspect the works... he treated Sg as his HOME.... 3) bcos of his great leadership, majority of Singaporeans supported him, 4)never claim success as his own, but humbly recognised tat it's everybody's efforts tat make today's Sg successful stories....he even humbly shared tat at times it was his wife insightful advices, tat helped him.... 5) at times when wrong decisions were made, he admitted on public TV.... A man to honour n salutes to u, sir....hope we can have another LKY...😢.

OMG! *He is a transformative and monumental figure. I admire him greatly and I see faint similarities to the current president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; the place were I was born in and lived up until the age of six before emigrating to the U.S. Accordingly, Bukele is now accused by the West of being a dictator because of how El Salvador got rid of the gang problem (MS-13 and others), how he deals with hypocrites in the media, how he has purged corrupt officials from government, and how his own party has swept the national, congressional, and city wide elections in 2024 with 87% of the vote. I really hope Bukele learns the lessons of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. I rally hope he follows in his footsteps, irrespective of what leaders in Washington bark about or what others in the West (to include hypocrite NGOs) complain about while never having to live the LIFE of an ordinary citizen of El Salvador. .... I wish the best to the people of Singapore. Thank you for showing the world how to build a nation. Thank you for having Lee Kuan Yew lead as an example for the rest of us outside of Singapore.* Cheers.

See how much conviction Mr Lee has when he said "Because the people supported us, therefore we succeeded!" He was a real leader and most people back then were willing to be led by him. He did not attribute the country's success to himself only!

I see some of him in Lawrance Wong, making hard decisive decisions that are necessary (raising 9% GST) and keep explaining and convicing people this is right. But I really hope, in years to come, Lawrance can really point to the figures and tell us that their hard decisions have worked and choosing them is right. Hope it doesn't dispappoint us

While I believe that he's a very good leader, I have doubts about whether that type of governance scales well. What I mean is - Singapore is a small country. Is it even possible for large countries to not be riddled with problems? US has so many issues. China is a basket case. Japan looks good on the surface but has so many deep rooted cultural and social issues because their homogeneity is a double edged sword. The other big nations like Indonesia and India are also rife with issues. I also live in a very small country and I love all the benefits this brings. Once you get into the hundreds of millions, it's really unmanageable.

@@pablosskates7067 the only reason why its never been managed is because of how rare benevolent dictators are and india was under British colonial rule and was "Democratic" ever scince. The material circumstances for India to become a dictatorship or for a coup to happen is not there. Upon many other factors Also just because it's never been done before never means it can not happen. I'm a huge LKY Fan if he was incharge of india he would have fixed all the major problems or atleast improved the quality of life .
