After the August Pocono race, Johnson had a 232 point lead in the standings. He then had 3 mysterious engine failures over the next 3 races. I always wonder if those would have happened if there wasn't a Chase that year. I always maintain that they went into "experiment mode" until the Chase started.
@User-nu6km
@User-nu6km 4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Kernich 2 of them weren’t mysterious. As a matter of face they were self inflicted. At Watkins glen he said over the radio he missed a shift, over revved the engine. It blew shortly afterward. At Indianapolis, he spun backwards and forgot to decouple the engine from the drive train. Due to the geometry of oil pumps they provide oil pressure only when the engine is spinning in the right direction. When the engine is spinning in the reverse direction the oil pumps act like vacuum pumps that suck oil from the bearings, damaging them. All it took was a few seconds of metal to metal contact to destroy a perfectly fine engine.

I found this to be a little interesting. In 2002, Tony Stewart won his first NASCAR Cup Series championship, which was also Jimmie Johnson's rookie season. The year after Stewart won his second championship in 2005, Jimmie Johnson would win his first championship. That year was also the first time that Stewart finished worse than seventh in the standings. He finished in 11th, narrowly missing the Chase. In 2011, Tony Stewart won his third and final NASCAR Cup Series championship in a miraculous comeback from last in the Chase standings to a tie for first with a win at Homestead. This was the season after Johnson won his last of the five consecutive championships. From 2005 to 2011, there were only two different champions in all of those years: Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart. One other thing to note about that season for Johnson in particular is that it was the first time he had ever finished worse than fifth in the standings, finishing in sixth. In 2016, Jimmie Johnson made history by winning a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series championships. That was also the year Tony Stewart won his final race and would retire. Those are some odd events for two drivers to be connected with.

It was the fact that NASCAR had their "We won't try for a green flag finish within X laps to go" rule. After the spring Talladega race that year (where the fans pelted Jeff Gordon with trash when NASCAR wouldn't red flag the race with 5 laps to go and let Junior have another shot at him), it became something that happened a couple other times before the Green-White-Checkered rule was implemented

Good Seasons Harry Gant 1991-92 6 wins, 32 top tens, 25 top fives, and two consecutive fourth place points finishes. Gant was the first driver since Richard Petty in 1971 to win four straight races. This would also serve as Gant’s last hoorah as he would never win again after 1992 and retired following the 94 season. Ward Burton 1999-2000 1 win, 33 top tens, 9 top fives, and 9th and 10th points finishes respectively. Statistically, these were the best seasons of Ward Burton’s career. His win in the 2000 Mall.com 400 at Darlington broke a 130 race winless streak dating back to the 1995 AC-Delco 400 at Rockingham.
