Kentucky Life's feature on Good Shepherd Cheese was nominated by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for a Regional Emmy Award.
Bath County's Good Shepherd Cheese is based on a recipe that has been popular in the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains for centuries. The shepherds at In Green Pastures Farm use old world techniques to make their artisan cheese, separating the cream from the milk and breaking up the curds. Except for salt used to turn the milk into cheese, no preservatives are used. The cheese is aged at least 60 days.
Kentucky Life visits the farm, watches the milking and cheese making process, and talks with Sanford and Colleen Dotson about the satisfaction of their life as shepherds and cheesemakers in the Bluegrass State.
There were 751 total Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Award entries this year, a record number, and only 291 received nominations. Nineteen KET productions and programs were nominated for an Emmy Award. This segment was produced by Valerie Trimble and James Piston.
