Yeah, Robin Williams definitely deserved his Oscar win for this role, as did Ben and Matt for writing the script.

I can't get through this movie without crying and laughing and I've seen it like 20 times. The Robin Williams monologues are hand crafted to perfection, and he delivers it so genuinely.

It started as an assignment to write a one act play for a writing class when Matt was at Harvard. He wrote the first 40 pages. He and Ben worked out the rest together. There's a YT video about Matt and Ben's interconnected careers where they talk a good bit more about it. It started out as an action movie where Will had cracked some code and the government was after him.

When Robin passed away the bench in Boston Public Garden became a huge memorial and still is a popular place for photos. What I find amazing is that Matt and Ben could write such a beautiful and layered script at such a young age. This movie actually started as a writing assignment for Matt while he was attending Harvard. You mentioned Kevin Smith he was instrumental in convincing Miramax and director Gus Van Zant to take on this project. Kevin became friends with Ben on the set of Mallrats and why Matt and Ben appear in Kevin's movies like Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob and Chasing Amy.

As many times as I've seen this, the most touching moment is realizing Robin goes from calling him Sport at the beginning and then refers to him as Son at the end.... To be 19-21 and write this movie is NUTS!!!

This is one of the best written movies of all time and that’s not an exaggeration. There’s about 5 or 6 scenes that hold up to this day as top notch S tier scenes

I cant go without mentioning, as important as it is to talk about mental health and trauma, Robin Williams didn't kill himself due to depression. I've struggled with it my entire life, and I'm glad his actions have brought it to the forefront of people's minds, but Robin Williams made a choice because he was suffering from a degenerative disease in which his mind was disintegrating. He was faced with choosing his own exit or becoming a shell of his former self, and it's a very different experience. I think that's something important to note. This remains a phenomenal movie, but I think my personal experiences demand that I bring this detail up.

That year at the academy awards both Matt & Ben took their Moms to the ceremony. And then they actually won. How cool is that? 🙂

The saddest part about the Robin Williams element is that he didn't die due to mental illness. He had a form of dementia that presents like Parkinson's. He essentially did what he did because he didn't want to put his family through the trauma of seeing him slowly die over the span of 5-7 years.

Affleck and Damon grew up together in Cambridge, MA. They've known each other pretty much their whole lives.

funny thing is that Spielberg picked Matt Damon for "Saving private Ryan" because he wanted an unknown actor to play that role... but while they were filming "Saving..." , this movie came out and shot Damon to stardom

The "my wife farts when shes nervous" part was completely improvised by Robin Williams and nobody on set knew it was coming. The laughter from he and Matt are 100% genuine. Thats Matt Damon cracking up, not Will. So was "son of a bitch, he stole my line." Williams improvised that after a few takes of trying different things.

Damon and.Affleck wrote this for Harvey Keitel after seeing him in Reservoir Dogs. When Keitel turned it down they still referred to it as the "Keitel part".

Five Year Dream Fact: The very first day of the shooting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck started crying out of happiness, because it was a scene between Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård, accomplished actors, doing Damon's and Affleck's scene verbatim, and they had waited so long (five years) for this to happen. MIT Connection Fact: Matt Damon, a former Harvard student, originally intended to make the title character a physics prodigy. He discussed his idea with Sheldon L. Ben and Matt wrote the screenplay because they were frustrated with not getting any good scripts to audition for. The also originally wanted to write an action movie but the studio had them change it.

3:14 Those are actually real math questions with real answers which makes this a great math movie. If you undergrad in STEM you'll be familiar with these concepts. They are actually not all that difficult either. The frst two you can teach highschoolers to solve in a probably a single lecture. However they are not related to fourier systems like the professor mentions, so that is bullshit.😅

Initially they wrote it as sort of a spy thriller about a streetwise genius being pursued by bullying Government agencies that wanted to use his talents. They sold it to Castle Rock with the contingency that the pair of them retain "sole" writing credit. Rob Reiner convinced them to lose the thriller aspect and brought in William Goldman for rewrites. The script was put into turnaround, and Kevin Smith read it, and brought it it to Harvey Weinstein ( *_shudder._* ) This happens all the time. It's rare for an original screenplay to be filmed as originally written, for a myriad of reasons. One of these rare exceptions is *_Unforgiven,_* which Clint Eastwood shot directly from the original screenplay without changing a thing. A truly great western, and well worth a reaction, if you guys didn't see it already.

I followed Robin Williams since he first came on the scene. When he first started doing serious movie roles I thought it was a joke, that is until I saw him act. Then I seen that he was right up there with the best. I since found out that many comedians had tragic lives and still battled addiction and depression. Jackie Gleeson was almost always drunk filming The Honeymooners episodes and Rodney Dangerfield suffered from chronic depression. I discovered that comedians like Tom Hanks and Robin Williams found it much easier to do dramatic roles because they said it was much easier than comedy.

The expression "keep your nose to the grindstone" makes sense because you smell the grinded material burning, so you stop and let it cool off. I think they were intentionally mixing up two expressions (keep your ear to the ground), but im not really sure.

When Robin Williams character was adamant on wanting Will to come back after that first session I believe he thought that if somebody was willing to be so cruel and nasty in order to push him away (Robin Williams character) something is very very wrong in this young mans life and he wanted to fix it.

People who hate math often view math as just algebra because of the education system, and hate it because of that experience. Math is so much more beautiful and intuitive than that once you get to trigonometry and calculus.

The math problems that will solved were real problems done by a doctorate in Mathematics. The second problem Will solved was no where near as difficult to solve as Professor Lambeau said it was in his class. Definitely not difficult enough for a Fields Medal to take a day to solve let alone two years. But it's a movie and less than 1% of 1% of the audience would notice.
