ah, one of my favourite movies of all time. comedic, impactful, genuine. this is one of those movies where for me it stops feeling like a movie because of the very real subject matter and everyones natural chemistry.

I love this movie! A few things to know: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for this movie, and Robin Williams won for Best Supporting Actor. After Robin died, there were a lot of flowers and chalk messages left on the bench by the duck pond, including "Your move, chief." The part where Will talks about his buddy going over and getting blown up because of the code that Will cracked was the original plot for the movie, which was more of an action thriller. When they pitched it, the studio convinced them to just tell Will's story, which I think is why Damon has the bigger role -- originally it would've been about equal. Matt Damon and Minnie Driver were dating in real life when they filmed this, or around this time. "Son of a bitch. He stole my line" was another bit of Robin Williams improv, there was no dialogue scripted in that scene.

The 12 brothers will is talking about are all the different kids he stayed with when he was in foster care.

The best part is that the accents aren't faked 😅

Sean knew that at his core, some part of Will believed that the abuse he suffered was somehow his fault (lots of abused kids do, even when they KNOW better, they FEEL that there must be something horribly wrong with them that their own parents can’t even love them) , and so for Will to have any chance of healthy attachments, Sean needed him to believe that it truly was not his fault. And that he was worthy/capable of loving and being loved.

Considering that Sean had Will's file before or shortly after they met, his focus on relationships makes a lot of sense given Will's background of abusive ones. Not to mention that Will kept taking the conversation in that direction. Just meeting him where his real concerns were. Thank you for your reaction.

Robin Williams has a "weird phone answering system" because the movie was made back in 1997 and most people didn't have cellphones and if you are traveling back then you needed an answering machine.

Loved how Sean called Will “ sport” until the end. In his final goodbye he called him “son”❤

Damon and Affleck were 24 and 22 when they wrote this, which makes it more remarkable. One funny thing is that Damon had shot Saving Private Ryan already, but it hadn't been released yet. One of the reason he got the part was because Spielberg was adamant about wanting an unknown to play the part, but because of this, Damon ended up being a famous, Oscar winning actor between the time Saving Private Ryan was shot and when it was released.

For the record that bar is the old Bow and Arrow on Bow street in Harvard Square. It was a fairly rough place even into the early 1990s when this was filmed. That ice cream shop is the Baskin Robins that used to be around the corner from there on Mass Ave. Bill Burr is from frickin' Canton and never saw either of those places in his life. Not a high school it's a local "community college", you can get basic college classes and 2 year degrees there dirt cheap.

I'm sure someone else will/has let you know but the fart joke scene was completely improvised, hence the genuine laughter from damon. same with a few scenes with the friend group banter- they were all just having fun on set

Imo if you haven't watch and reacted to it yet , i think you should watch "The Green Mile" that is a amazing, great , beautiful movie but very heartbreaking, same goes for The Titanic (based off a true story), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, (1990' original) Roald Dharls The Witches (The Grand High Witch), Original Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (with Gene Wilder as WillyWonka) , Nutty Professor (with Eddie Murphy), Shrek (animated movie), Mrs Doutbfire (with Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire).

I don’t trust people that can make it thru this movie and not get emotional. You haven’t experienced enough pain to get it.

ahhh this movie is up there with Boondocks Saints as just an overall perfect movie. Very different obviously lol but both perfection.

What's really funny, if you watch the scene were both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are at the bar educating "The Barney" as well as when Damon rubs Minnie Driver's phone number in his face, if you stop the movie and watch the parody "Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back it's awesome!

an thats how alot of kids in foster care feel. you ended up in a shitty home and they blame you for everything. they see the children just as another paycheck and nothing more. they slowly get corrupted and feel like anything they do is the wrong thing. so many people abuse the foster cares system for their own selfish greed. the chances of kids getting out of foster homes and actually having somewhat of a successful life is 1/100
