I've seen this movie about 50 times and I just noticed how when Will leans forward to grab his cigarettes at 1:35, Professor Lambeau doesn't know what he's doing yet and leans back in fear. You can see the worry on his face for a moment, then they resume their conversation. It's so subtle but it adds another layer to the disconnect of the two characters.

Bullshit scene. That's an interrogation room. Good Will assaulted a cop. With a rap sheet a mile long. Doubt any Professor could cut that deal. And if so, they don't send teach in alone. Nor release him without supervision. Judge has to work with arresting officer.

Hell of a point man. I’m genuinely curious how the rest of the call went… did she hear the “juvy” comment or was his hand muffling the phone enough… did he call to genuinely find out if maybe she could help cause he had no one else to call… or was it folded into letting her down easy by embarrassing himself but also getting the satisfaction of knowing she was waiting for him to call… “oh will…”… that’s like probably all he needed to hear.

I disagree. I think Lambeau really cared about Will in his own way. Yes, of course he didn't want to see that talent go to waste, but for people who are like that character, that's what their caring is. He's just more analytical than most. I think the character is much more subtle than many people think.

I love the way this movie wrote Lambeau and how Stellan Skarsgård pulled it off. I think the first time I watched the movie I wrote him off as the typical "snooty European" character that doesn't really have any "street smarts" and also is a little cold and wrapped up in his own world. But when you really pay attention you realize the guy understands Will and the Robin Williams character and that he genuinely really cares about both. He just chooses to live in a different world with a different moral code. For example in this scene when he greets him with the " I was the guy you told to go fuck himself" line, you know that this guy has no issues with swearing but he's the type of person who understands that constantly using that language reflects poorly on himself but more importantly on those around you. You make those you presumable care about around you, look worse. So he would choose not to be that type of person. But he knows that with a guy like Will, using that language is to his advantage. And the way he laughs a little when he tells him he has to see a therapist. He knows it's a bit of a joke (even though it didn't turn out to be). Of course the way he pulls back when Will goes for the cigarettes shows he also understands violent people and how unpredictable a situation like that might be.

You know it's easy to see the professor as misguided, and he probably is. But if he hadn't been so passionate about math and finding the genius who solved his problem and wanting to take said prodigy under his wing, Will would have never met Sean and worked through his trauma, but would have just stayed in prison.

I think the best part of this scene for me is despite Damon’s lack for tact, the Professor doesn’t feel the need to assert his position as the adult. He takes him as he is and not how he wants him to be. Even helps him light a cig in an enclosed room. (Fully aware that this is all intentional, I just never get enough of scenes like this)
@theusername07
@theusername07 2 жыл бұрын
This whole scene is about control. 1) Will is incredibly intelligent and can conquer most men intellectually, but he couldn't even light his own cigarette. Handcuffed (lack of control), he requires help doing the most menial task. 2) Lambou throws the matches haphazardly on the table, indicating loss of respect and thus loss of control of Will's property. Will regains control by stacking the matches back on the cigarette box. 3) When Will stands up to get his cigarettes, he gains control as the dominant and taller figure in the room. Afraid, Lambou leans back, briefly losing control, before regaining dominance over Will by lighting his cigarette. 4) Lambou and Will's ping ponging of the proposal is a tug of war over control. Will ultimately losing all control in exchange for his freedom. This is symbolic of the story's main message. Will must lose his obsession with control to be truly free.

There is good reason to be distrusting of these people. And he gets them every time. He is smarter than these therapists. He sees the contradictions in the advice they give him. He sees the ulterior motives and subtle condescending implications of their words. He gets at their own vices and shortcomings sometimes even. He is incredibly wise in his own way.

Love this movie, but there are a few holes. One of them being that if he called Skylar from jail, the operator would have said that it's a call from jail and she would have known where he is.

Great movie. Lambeau helps change Will's life in so many ways. Will hates him because he views him as an elite, ehich might be true. But Lambeau puts the resources together to help Will get on a better track.

The jail I was recently in, you or the person you talk to can open an account. Then you can just call and it's put through. If you didn't have money on your account - then it would be collect.
