I covered the remake of Black Christmas years ago when I first started doing these. I was never particularly happy with it and wanted to go back and give it the full exploring treatment.
So here is a much more comprehensive look at a little of the original and a lot of the remake.

"Things were going along well, until one day, Harvey Weinstein showed up on set" is one of the most repeated (and dreaded) phrases uttered in Hollywood!

what's worse is no one can contend with Harvey without being blackballed by every major studio. He's the worst thing to come out of Hollywood since Michael Bay.

I understand the reaction when hearing the name Harvey Weinstein but the guy did greenlight a lot of classics. Just because the jerk was a pos when dealing with people doesn't mean he was a bad producer or champion of unusual movies.
@jamstonjulian6947
@jamstonjulian6947 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry but even as a producer he was very overbearing and interfering. He may have his name on some great movies but he probably ruined just as many.
@kodek2000
@kodek2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamstonjulian6947 not to belabour the point but he was widely celebrated as a producer, this is just a fact. The many many many pics with celebs proof this to some degree. People can wear two hats at the same time. Cosby was a prolific rapist and considered a genius comedian at the same time. Weinstein was a sleazebag. Was he overbearing and interfering as a producer? No shit, that's what being a producer is all about. Why the fuck do you make me defend an abusive jerk?
@jamstonjulian6947
@jamstonjulian6947 5 жыл бұрын
I have no idea why you're defending an abusive jerk, but you're free too. I will simply say that any producer that makes themselves and everyone lots of money and success is going to be fairly well liked, no? And no, not every producer is overbearing and power-mad like he was. It seems strange that you're separating his abusive qualities from his skills as a producer when it's obvious they go hand in hand.

you know, I HATE remakes for the most part, and I hated this remake, considering that black Christmas is one of my all time favorite movies, but yet again, with YOUR video and the considerate amount of research you have done on this, it makes me appreciate the IDEA and that the intentions of the filmmakers of this one. I gotta give you props man, you DO YOUR RESEARCH, I especially like your "tank girl" review. so much that I defended the film on NOSTALGIA CRITIC video on tank girl, explaining extras tid-bits and facts that you mentioned, and how people should do more research themselves on movies that they are just following the hate-bandwagon on. and I got MASSIVELY troll-bombed. but it doesn't bother me, because if I know that there are other people out there like us that can see through the hate and beneath the surface, then the trolls insults can fall on deaf ears, so here's to you dude, keep on, keeping on! :)

Once again, amazing analysis and review for 'Black X-Mas', GBF. That's what I like about u; u are one of the more cool-headed critics who even give flawed movies a second chance, instead of simply bitching and moaning at the movie for its flaws, like what most YT critics seem to do more often. Even since I've seen it at the theater (yes I saw it in theaters) on New Year's Eve 2006, I thought it was decent. This movie led me to the 1974 original. While the original was better (and is now a favorite of mine as well), I still thought the remake was okay as a stand-alone. And now thanks to u, you've made my unorthodox appreciation for this movie more justified. It's a guilty pleasure of mine now. Thank u for this, GBF, u r awesome. ;)

Years later and I still don't like this Remake. However, after seeing the 2019 remake.....my....fucking God. In comparison, IN COMPARISON! At least the 2006 version is more respectful of the original Black Christmas. And it was still faithful towards the original, while coming up with new things. I'm not praising nor defending this remake, I still didn't like the characters personally, they were too annoying and drama plot holes just throw in there just to add drama for no reason. And giving TOO MUCH information about the killer Bill, REALLY PISSED ME OFF. But AGAIN! In comparison to the 2019 shitty remake, at least the 2006 remake was (at least) having a connection towards the original. The 2019 remake of Black Christmas on the other hand......I.....it was.....I....don't even know what the fuck that was suppose to be. And I have no goddamn idea who it was made for. You wanna talk about a remake that has ZERO connection to the original, NO references to the original and just steals an original title that has NOTHING to do to the original? With bullshit drama fest and sexist and horrible messages! Look no further than Black Christmas 2019! If Bob Clark was still alive, he would have been disgusted by that trash! I NEVER EVER thought I would EVER hear myself say this but.....the 2006 version.....is not that bad.

I saw the remake before the original and I loved it. It was fun, the characters, though bitchy, were genuinely likable and it didn't skimp on the gore. They really just don't make horror movies like that anymore. That said, when I finally watched the original, it quickly became one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The fact that you never get any backstory or motivation, you never see the killer's face and there is no real closure at the end, combined with the final shot of the house, makes it one of the most unsettling endings in any horror movie that I've seen. It is a shame it doesn't get the love it deserves and I would have loved to have seen the original vision of the remake.

Looks like I will need to give the reboot a second look. I initially watched it out of morbid curiosity, and then instantly dismissed it as a gory, sensational heap of candy-colored trash ... without the appeal and fright of the 1974 film (the original being a movie that is one of the most chilling slashers to me). And the tampering with the story, and the whole Agnes thing, left me vexed. When I saw the title of this video I assumed it was a look at the original movie; there's no indication there. This is 90% about the remake. I would enjoy seeing an in-depth look at the first version of "Black Christmas". These videos are always *so* enjoyable and nicely made.

Hi, 53-y/o here. The POV shots date back to the Spencer Tracy Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde ('32?). Silent Night Bloody Night ('72) also used POV shots (& an Xmas theme too). The doc "Killer Legends" did a good job suggesting The Babysitter & Telephone dated to just b4 the Korean War, but it might be sooner (I'll ck that out, thanks!). I still think the boyfriend was the killer & the ending was tacked on to make everyone "unsure," but Bob Clark says if you watch carefully it is not the bf. (Sure.) Thanks for the newsy video!

Cast in the trailer for Black Christmas as Michelle Trachtenberg's character. The movie was so gory that in order to show the trailer on American television; all the scenes that would be used needed to be filmed again. Michelle was unavailable so the production company thought they could get away with casting a new person even though Jillian is not actually in the film. In the trailer Jillian gets thrown off a snowy roof and gets pierced by a Christmas tree, she gets stuck having to chop her friend out of a frozen lake in the snow and then she see's her face....

It's funny because the remake of Black Christmas is one of my favorite horror remakes. I felt like they gave so much character to each one of the girls and I love that because they're all played by up and coming actresses, that you don't quite know who the final girl will be, something that not a lot of horror films do.

I become a bigger fan of yours with every passing video. I've never seen the remake of BC. I figured it was just another remake put through the Hollywood meat grinder, but you've got me seriously interested. I'll be watching it.

I saw Willard in theater. Not bad, the sound design was amazing. Definitely to be watched with surround sound. The doppler effects of off screen sounds was great. It really immerses you.

Hmmm....okay, so this could be a stretch, but "Lauren Hannon" could be a reference to Bob Hannon, who recorded children's songs in the 50's including a few for Christmas, like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". That's the only "Hannon" I've found connected to Christmas music. Also, pretty sure the character of "Kyle Autry" is a reference to Gene Autry, another famous singer who had a really famous version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Anyway, music trivia moment over. Carry on.

As someone who adored this film growing up and even now, I think people are way too critical of it. Yes, it can be a little too gory and a lil cringe at times, but tell me a horror film since the 2000s thats had such a great story line, with great direction and colour scheming that wasn't a direct remake. I think its a very twisted and intricate storyline with a great amount of action, would recommend!

For years I felt I was the only one who knew of the movie Black Christmas. When the remake came and went, whenever I talked about Black Christmas everyone thought I was referring to the lacklustre remake! Bad to hear about the original director's death.

Love the original Black Christmas. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies. While the remake had its moment, I hated the whole backstory that was added. It took away the dark mystery of the original and almost made the remake more comical. When I went to watch It: Chapter Two, they showed a trailer for yet another remake of Black Christmas. I'll save my money on that and wait for it to come out on cable.

Well it was kind of fitting that I did happen to watch Black Xmas, yes the remake, this christmas for the very first time. Aaaand it was more like a black comedy/horror movie than anything else. I did enjoy the cast, part of the reason why I watched it in the first place, but despite not having any expectations, I would not exactly call it good. But I will definitely see the orginal, if I can find it, and then perhaps give the remake another viewing. Happy New Year!
