So my Cloud Peak 2 shit itself on Green Gable, I understand its not a true 4 season tent and shouldn’t really be taking it up to the summits of mountains in winter, however the mountain forecast only had predicted winds of 20mph on the summit otherwise I wouldn’t of risked camping at the top.
Lesson learnt.
Hope you enjoy the video peeps

Just watched this on the TV and had to come on the computer to comment. Just wanted to say thank you for uploading this video. The the massive amount of KZfaq campers these days, it's very easy for people to think that anyone can just buy a cheap tent and go anywhere. They make it look very easy and like nothing can go wrong. I think it's important to show the not so fun side of wild camping and that sometimes you just have to accept it, call it, and try again a different day. As you said, the mountains aren't going anywhere. Great video as usual, I'm sure your channel is going to blow up soon, keep at it. Edit to add: that's not me criticising the other youtubers, just saying they can be somewhat misleading to people who don't hike often.

Had an issue with my scarp 1 over Xmas, really strong winds destroyed it, anyway gone to hilleberg now, no doubt what most would suggest, I now have the nallo2. A really good tent is the fjallraven abisko 1 or 2, the 2 is very roomy, about same weight as the nallo2 but I couldn't get one when I wanted one. You made right decision to bail no doubt whatsoever, my tent failed at 2am I couldn't go anywhere, luckily I had my sleeping bag in bivvy bag so got my border collie in with me and stayed flat to ground till first light. Rule number 1 don't panic, I stayed put as it was safest option, you got off mountain as that was safest option. We live to fight another day. Like your stuff, keep going and keep safe pal

Thats not good to hear that about the scarp, seen a few issues lately about the scraps failing and from what i’ve seen tonight, the customer service doesn’t seem to be too great. Really liking the look of Fjallraven tents. I was looking at the Abisko lite 2 after seeing it on Bushman & Blue’s channel many times.. seems a really good strong tunnel tent, so thats certainly an option for me in the future. Thanks for watching Phil. Take care mate👍🏼

And I carry emergency repair items like tenacious tape and even a needle and cotton don't think it would of helped you on this occasion but definitely worth a carry for a few grams. Honestly mate, the cloud peak is a decent tent. Lube the zips up and you can use at height with confidence from March till october. Alot of tents will struggle in 35 mph winds. They arent so bad if you are already set up, but hard work when not all pegged out already.

Well what an adventure! Very lucky you came down safe. Lesson learned. You didnt only took an unsuitable tent for this conditions but you pitch your tent late before dusk. You planned your trip for 3 days and you didnt plan to pitch you re tent as soon as you could when you arrived on the spot. Always the first thing you should do is to pitch your tent and if anything failed you have time to return back in daytime.

We had a zip failure on a new tent, not cheap either. As a storm was raging I got my emergency sewing kit out, then put seam sealer all down it and it survived the rest of our trip. The company took it back to repaired but delivered us a brand new replacement. I have now reinforced where the zips tend to fail so here's hoping. Not had chance to test it out yet. You sure did the right thing and slowly descended. Last yr up mam tor, we saw a tent strewn over the mountainside, as if someone had trouble and just lazily left it there and went home.

Bro, you did the right thing. The zip has been an issue on the Cloud Peak and like you said, it could have happened anywhere... The wind on summits is ruthless. Hillebergs are getting bent poles, Scarp Tents are having guy lines rip entire flys apart!!! Your safe, that's the main thing. I wouldn't Summit camp in winds, always find a sheltered spot lower down. With that said, good on you for making a decision and executing it, no point risking yourself for a video. 👍👍👍

Thanks bro, yeah really disappointed with the zip as its a pretty decent tent for the money. I am glad you made the right decision. A hilleberg Allak 2 is probably the best but I have no experience on the mountains. someone asked me about camping on the mountains. I said no, my tents will be destroyed at that altitude. plus even hiking I don't want to do that solo (lack of experience) because the weather will change. I was in Dartmoor in Dec at a carpark near Cox Tor. I got out the car for 1 minute and that cold wind with force dropped my body temperature down rapidly. Then I knew these conditions are not for me. especially climbing up and down these condtions. I can imagine the focus you had to get down safe. plus adrenaline. shock. your body is in survival mode. As you said the mountains are not going anywhere. It is important you published this video. proof of this tent isn't up to extreeme conditions and it could be life threatening and probably life ending due to exposure. I am so glad you are safe and well. take care buddy and thankyou. God bless.

Hope the new tent give you many great camps. We can feel your disappointment coming through, but as you say; they’ll always be there. Hey fella. Only just started watching your videos/subscribed. The lakes is my favourite place too for wild camping. Glad to see you made it down safely & you def made the right choice to abandon considering. I also owe the cloud peak 2 & used it a lot until about a year ago. The little niggles annoyed me too. You probably (if money is not an issue) will be wanting a Soulo? Black Label? As these are (in my eyes) the best ‘weather tolerant’ mountain tent available. However, if you are looking at something cheaper, I bought the 4 season Terra Nova Voyager as an upgrade to the CP2. It retails around £600. But I picked it up at a ridiculously cheaper price when on offer & can honestly say it has been amazing to date, it’s had some punishment over the past year, including 50mph winds on Kinder. Keep up the wainwright bagging pal (I’m currently on 161) & keep these videos coming, I really enjoy watching them 👍

Ey up pal, thanks for watching and subscribing. Yeah can’t beat the Lakes and so looking forward to getting back. Yeah it is a shame about those niggles because its actually a decent tent for the money. Yeah you got it right about the Soulo BL mate that’s what i’m gonna go for, then at least I have piece of mind that if anything was to go wrong at least i’ve given my self the best chance by having a high end 4 season tent. I’ve looked at the Voyager I think Andrew Beavers uses 1 on his winter camps. 161 wainwrights, that is some achievement mate , I think Green Gable was my 13th ( thinking back, how unlucky was that lol ) But i’ve only been to the Lake District for first time last June so i’m gonna be getting as many Wainwrights bagged as I can this year! Take care mate and thanks for watching.

I am often quite surprised how routinely so many UKers I see on different channels heading for their alpine camps (exposed well above tree line or set-ups on/near summits) equipping themselves with junk tents poorly suited for the mountains. Is it the case that lots of folks are just on too thin a budget? Are people buying into hype and false promise? Are gear selection priorities somehow misinformed, flawed, to impaired? Is good stuff too cost prohibitive and not readily available? Also, appears you had little to no contingency for a shelter failure. As stated... travel to and from is valuable time and involves whatever expenditure... why not protect the logistical investment by having suitable gear that has some build-quality reliability? Everybody can have the walk-out, bail-out scenario unfold no matter what gear or whatever environments/conditions. Good that you where decisive, conservative, and not overextended in an exposed environment turning the situation potentially more consequential. Endgame here hopefully is to: A.)Seriously upgrade to suitable and sustainable gear selections B.) Familiarize with new gear and how to make field expedient repair C.) Preparedness addressing backup gear D.) Some more contingency planning regarding camp and bivouac spots vs. full bail.

Thank you for your in depth comment, Although I personally knew my tent isn’t a true 4 season tent I do think it is an issue that it and many others are marketed and sold as a 4 season tent when they are clearly not. I’ve since learnt my lesson and bought a Hilleberg Soulo BL, which is not only a more suitable shelter for the conditions, the build quality is a lot higher and less partial to failure. I’ve learnt my lesson in regards to the budget end of the gear, there is a time and a place, and at the summit of a mountain in the middle of winter is not the place. Thanks again for your comment.
