Nah, you really can't take great pics with any cam. Any decently working non-specialized camera combo yes, perhaps, but not _any_. I have a almost brand new camera that not only can you not take great pictures with, you cannot take ANY pictures with it, unless you fugg around in a darkroom with it and fiddle a 35mm piece of film in the right place by hand, the transport on it doesn't work - never has. That said I don't give two poops about what Canon does per se, but I hope the EF-M lenses get cheaper for a while, before going stratospherically expensive, so I can complete my collection without needing to rob a bank.

You’re quite right Mark. There’s nothing wrong with these cameras. I’m using m50, M6 and M200. They all share my arsenal of lenses and I’m very happy with the video quality that I get from them all. It is curious that Canon are finishing the m series though. The M50 must have been an entry into mirrorless for so many people and Canon even put out a mk2 of that and the M6. They were all at a nice price level for beginners.

I agree 100% Ian. I will be keeping my M50s & M200 for many years to come having spent thousands on gear. It is very odd that Canon should ditch one of their best selling cameras (of all time?) and fail to support the lens range for it, then replace it with a lens range where there are no 3rd party manufacturers with more affordable lenses for beginners. I subscribe to both your and Mark's channel as the pair of you make perfect sense to me. Thumbs up to Mark for his comments. Neither of you are shills like many of the channels who talked rubbish about the exclusive leaks they had about the new M50 II, none of which proved to be true and who ditched the M50 quickly some time ago. Mark has tried to find lenses that have extended the life of the EF-M range while Canon did rather little for M owners. Keep up the great work Mark & Ian.

@@apislapis Thank you. I don’t understand really why Canon did this. The M6 is a lovely little camera and is deadly with the Sigma f1.4 series of lenses for low light and lovely shallow depth of field. I was hoping that Canon might have continued with new models but just to discontinue ………….

The Canon M50 is the only camera that I have been unable to walk away from since I got it in 2018. It is the only camera that calls me back whenever I say I'm done with it. It's small, light, and takes fantastic pictures, and once you get used to it, you can even make the battery last longer by switching it off in between shots. I bought it for street photography, but have ended up using it for events, and protests, even vlogs. I've ended up buying adapters for it, and shooting it with vintage m42 lenses… and when I pop a UFO lens on it, it is even pocketable. I've used it so much, all the rubbers are falling off at the back. I've used it in the rain, where it has got soaked and started to spaz out, but after blowing it out, and leaving it in rice, it has sorted itself out on more than one occasion. Because of my back problem, I have considered going full in on the M-system, even buying a second body for more serious work for when I can't lift my DSLRs anymore. I'm still going to do that irrespective of Canon's decision to discontinue this little wonder machine… more fool them.

The 22mm is something I personally think that everyone should play with at least once. It's not really useful to describe how balanced the lens is without being able to see what it does yourself, it hits a sort of "magical" equilibrium between a sort of fisheye and something like a fullframe 50mm fixed that I at least think is good enough to make it a "must have" on EF-M cameras, if not on the camera it should be in the bag with it. Mine doesn't sit on my EOS-M that often because I have a Viltrox adapter and some other lens on it to get some specific more tele look, but the 22mm is never far.

@noth606
@noth606 7 ай бұрын
@@fingereze7202 To me the best thing it does is that pictures with it don't have that "too wide" look if you get what I mean, it takes pictures that look normal unless you go out of your way to push it, like a full picture height vertical object at the edge of frame. It has the look of a 35mm on FF almost exactly. The only real downside is that it doesn't play well with low light, but that's logical. Another big advantage is that it makes the camera look like a plain compact camera, not at all 'intimidating' like a big DSLR tends to be, so people tend to be more willing to be photographed with it - at least in my experience. I often take pictures of things that spontaneously happen, and when I ask if I may take pictures, people always look at my camera. The EOS-M+22mm gets the same reaction that my compact Lumix'es do which is always "Sure" with a smile. If I'm carrying my Nikon with batterygrip etc very often it's a "Nooo..." or I have to explain what I want to do with the pictures first.

Thanks Mark. I purchased my Canon M50 Mark 2 in July. This little camera has re-sparked my love for photography since it is so easy to carry. I purchased the Canon 32 mm and the 55-200 zoom. Been happy with those and the kit lens. The 32 is probably the best lens I have ever owned. I was disappointed with Canon's decision - I think they made another mistake. But in response I just bought a new Canon 22 fs lens for $179 with free shipping. I also purchased a Viltrox adapter and I can now use two of my lens from my old 650 from the 1980s. I just tried out my soft focus 135 mm f2.8 prime and my 50 mm f1.8. Except for the noisy auto focus they work great. So.... in a few months I may add a M6 mark 2 body and I will use both!

I really love my M50ii. Got it when my Panasonic TZ200 conked out in March 2023. I was aware the EF-M system was on the way out, but it suited my needs and importantly budget. Got the body and kit lense new on special for $800 AUD, a second hand 55-200 mm in Tokyo for $292 AUD and the 22mm prime for $160 AUD (inc postage) second hand on eBay. Probably another $120ish on bag, quick release clips, screen protector and spare batteries. The small size and weight is perfect for bush walks and when I am out on my bike. With 22mm prime it is not much bigger than the Panasonic and probably smaller than my old Canon G12 powershot that took great photos until the lense got scratched. I am hoping that the M50ii will give me many years of fun.

I bought my M50 Mark 2 a couple of years ago, and I heard from several people that I shouldn't get it because the M-mount would be discontinued sooner rather than later, and I wouldn't be able to get new lenses. But the thing is, I am not the kind of person who WANTS a ton of lenses that all overlap and get dusty. I've been very happy with the size of the camera and the quality of the photos, and I see no reason to jump ship now. All good points. I think what most ( or all ) manufacturers are trying to do is force buyers into higher-priced items with fewer features. As much as I like the M6 II, it has no EVF unless purchased separately. Somewhat related, you now see new higher-priced phones with no micro SD slot. There are several key differences between cameras and computers though: 1) Cameras have more moving parts that wear out and will be harder to replace. 2) Camera batteries degrade over time, and the use of proprietary designs (i.e. not the standard AA) will also make them harder to replace. It is precisely because of these reasons that I am considering grabbing a second M50 so that I can continue using my underwater casing for this particular camera model.

I agree with much of what you said here. I still use the original Canon EOS M for video with MagicLantern. More than 10 years old and the image quality is stunning, it even produces raw video. Perfect! I actually don't use it with EOS-M lenses but lenses from other mounts adapted to it. I have so many lenses for other systems that buying native lenses didn't make any sense at all. I've actually been waiting for full frame mirrorless cameras to get out of their constant upgrade cycle for video because I like to keep my gear for a long time. I think we're getting there finally. My main camera for photos is a Leica M6 from 1990 by the way. That's when photography on film reached the peak of that technology. I'm waiting for the equivalent of that for video before I invest in a full frame mirrorless. I'm thinking R8 might already be the ticket if I don't need IBIS.

Thanks for the video! I don't really follow camera news so I wouldn't have known otherwise. It's sad to see this mount go, but in a lot of ways it may be a blessing for M50 users who want to expand their lens arsenal at a discount in the future. I bought my M50 brand new in 2020 at the start of the pandemic and I don't plan on selling it or letting it go until the thing just does not switch on anymore 😂 Like you said with the computer analogy, you can keep using cameras until they quit on you essentially. If you look at the digicam craze, those cameras are well over 20 years old and people are picking them back up to shoot nostalgic photos. Perspective is important! As for video, it's still pretty great for family videos or youtube since most ppl still do not shoot in 4k. Again thanks for the info!

Canon M wasn't a bad idea, but because they went for "smaller, lighter" etc from the start, they had a fight on their hands with every other new release. Working professionals are not the audience for the modern releases. As you say, people that earn money don't care for 8k video when their clients have never shown any interest in it. One of the most talented photographers I know uses a Canon 450D, but they use it so very well that absolutely no-one cares.

Well said Mark. I migrated from EOS EF DSLR to R6 mirrorless but kept my EF lenses, so I recently found an EOS-1D X (Mk 1) that's 10+ years old. And from a sensor performance perspective (specifically color science and ISO), the 1DX is only marginally behind the R6...which apparently uses the same sensor as the 1DX Mk3. I think the newer cameras give you advantages in video performance, but if you're a stills photographer, there's nothing wrong with the older lenses and DSLR cameras. Investing in skills is often a better option...

Since then I've only bought secondhand - for video/film work - even happy to be owning a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera OG - that's already 3 generations old ... but still working perfectly and being m4/3 MFT has a wealth of lens types to use adapted. I think we're at 'peak digital camera' now so whatever comes out of development will be really just more refined versions of what we already have for the foreseeable future. The cross over between stills and video is now at its most mature - so we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to gear.

I did decide to move from my M5 into the R7, so enough improvements so as to be very aware of them (e.g., focus tracking). However, I will miss my M lenses, as Canon seemed to put a bit more effort into some of them (e.g., 32mm f/1.4) than they've opted, so far, to put into RF-S.

I'm not going to give up my M50 or my M6 MII, my Sigma Trio or my other EF-M lenses now or in the foreseeable future. I think these cameras are phenomenal. Besides, I'm still learning how to use all the features and functionality packed into these small mirrorless cameras! I'm satisfied with the quality of the photos and videos they produce. I'm good for now, unless some other fantastic camera in the future catches my eye. 😉I anticipated that Canon would discontinue the EF-M line at some point. It's a shame, but understandable. Perhaps now I can find an EVF for my M6 MII cheaper now. I didn't buy an EVF initially because I thought they were overpriced. Thanks, Mark for the info in this video.

Same reason I picked up a used 7DmkII (even older than these M-series cams). If the price is right and the camera is in good working order, use it until it breaks down or stops doing what you need of it. Do you really wanna be "that person" trying to keep up with the Jones's as every new body, lens, and accessory comes out? Or do you wanna focus on your craft, keep taking great photos and improve your skills? Cause a new camera isn't going to magically make you a better photographer.

Is it a bummer? For sure. Will I continue to shoot my M6ii for the next decade? Absolutely. I love this camera. With the pancake 22mm, it can go anywhere with little hassle. I’ll probably take this as the time to finally pick up a few lenses I’ve had my eye on: Rokinon 12mm, Sigma 16mm, and a telephoto.

such a great video! you're right, skills matter a lot more than gear. Although it's fun to research gear. the RF line and cameras are amazing indeed, but i just ordered a m6mk2 22/32mm combo that should arrive tomorrow. It's mostly for travel and street photography and snapshots of my children. those 50mm 1.2 85mm 1.2 rf lens are amazing, but the weight for a old guy like myself is just too much. I just share my jpegs to my family and friends and i can bearly tell the difference so i don't think they would be able to also, but i wanted something better than a cell phone quality. I'm going to take this challenge and try not to upgrade until I've used the camera so much that is breaks and I am forced to upgrade. thanks for this video! I'm curious, in 2024, what system and lens combo would you recommend for travel and street and faimly candids? I think i saw a few fuji videos on your channel

I think it comes down to mostly genre when it comes to gear, and competitiveness. For example, when I shot my K-1 for weddings and such, my keeper rates and overall volume of shots provided to client were low. 4.4fps, buffer of 17 and flakey AF doesn't suit well for this style. Going to an XH2S is night and day difference and has seen my business grow accordingly. However, in many other applications like landscape the K-1 is still superb, in fact it might be THE BEST landscape camera going around (name another camera with built in astrotracing, gps, super rugged, the best implementation of pixelshift, unique robust tilt screen, incredible RAW files, bla bla). So indeed many old cameras are fine depending on what you do with your camera but I think specifics matter, with newer tech comes support to enable you to capture moments with higher keeper rates that leads to a richer portfolio. Pick the right tool for the job is my mantra.

New cameras also have a more advanced AF and faster startup time, my main issues with the M6 II (I would not call it pro level because of that, not for action shots). I really hope Canon will produce a high level RF-S camera in M6 II size. I'm not sure if prices will go down if there is no alternative in the Canon system, prices might go up because they are rarities now.

My only gripe is I wish I could find a telephoto lens which was ‘zoomier’ than the native 55-200mm. I’ve only had the camera since December and I’m not keen on the idea of upgrading just yet and hopefully the discontinuation will mean I can find a bargain Sigma 30mm.

Move to Sony bro. Their E-mount system basically guarantees that you won't be shadowed. While at the same time you get "pro level" features on their budget cams like clean HDMI and audio monitoring. I'm keeping my M50 MK1 that I got for 400 w/ kit and 22mm f2, since I feel that I still have a lot to learn/prioritize what features I want for the next upgrade. Although, canon colors are nice and you don't really have to spend post processing.

I am stuck with the M10, still use it. The only complain with it is just the video autofocus. But for photography, I think I kinda miss the dslrs such as the 50D, or even If I one day have the budget, I have been thinking to get myself a 5d classic. I have been wanting a full frame due to the shallower dof on the same focal length, plus the wider image area. So the old 5d should be great. And also I have heard about its colours, which is somehow closer to film look. But that is another story, IF i one day have the budget.

I had an M50, and I saw that thing coming the moment the first RF mount APS-C cameras were announced, so I sold everything then and there (I already had a Fuji X-T1 on the side, upgraded to an X-T2 in the process, been happy since). I wouldn't recomment anyone wanting to get into a system for a long time to get into EF-M right now, however if that person is just strictly a hobbyist that isn't planning on doing much besides personal stuff, travel stuff etc, then honestly the lenses that are available on the EF-M system are more than good enough and more than what a hobbyist would need for all of their photography. New lenses be damned, if there is already what you need, why do you want more? You talked about the Viltrox, Sigma and some Canon lenses, but there is two other lenses I want to talk about : the excellent 11-22 which is an awesome lens, and the 32mm f/1.4 which is probably the sharpest lens I've ever seen (and I use quite good Fuji glass so that should be telling). There is really good lenses in the EF-M system, and good camera bodies to boot. My personal choice would go for a used M5, the sensor is a little older but still good, and the ergonomics of this camera are just damn nice. It's perfect for a hobbyist. Otherwise I just hope that Canon just straight up re-use the optical designs of lenses like the 22mm f/2 and 32mm f/1.4 and make banger RF-S lenses, cause really that's the only thing that cameras like the R10 and R7 lack : good, purpose built APS-C glass.

I bought my M50 for video capability on a budget and it is super great for that but I have never been fond of the images I get out of the camera. I always tend to prefer what I create on other cameras including older digicams like my minolta dimage. Even the pictures I take that I like there's still something off with them that I don't feel when taking on my film cameras or my digicams. I just cannot put a finger on it. All that to say I'm all for using older equipment if it still works. No reason to upgrade if your camera is still giving you good images. But I dont think I could ever recommend the M system for photography and I totally understand why they discontinued it
