Goodbye "Enters the Battlefield"

Bloomburrow is bringing with it a small change to MTG templating. "Enters the battlefield," abilities will be replaced by, "enters," abilities. It can be a little jarring when you first see it, so I hope this video helps make things a bit less confusing.

This should be fine long-term but it's a bit frustrating since it makes learning the game initially a bit more confusing since Enters sounds really open-ended. Are we entering the graveyard? Entering exile? Shouldn't really matter but the amount of small hurdles that new players have getting into Magic is a bit much already

MaRo stated that they specially won't shorten that phrase, because leaving zone effects are less prevalent than ETB.

It reads terrible, but i guess its just because I got used to ETB. Maybe they can use icons next and stuff even more words into these textboxes 😂

Normally I'm all for shortening what's on the card, but I think this might remove a bit too much? At least it's an easy explanation.

I agree. When it enters what? It can enter my hand, the graveyard, the exile zone, the command zone... For clarity's sake, I hope this gets reversed.

Wouldn’t just saying “enters” always refer to ETB? It would specify where it would go if the card entered a different zone right?

They’re changing the rules text to more closely match spoken shorthand, which I don’t think is a good idea. It “enters”? Enters what? Enters the graveyard? Enters the hand/library? Enters the damn stack? I think they should’ve kept it as enters the battlefield, even though people just say “enters”

Cards literally don't "enter" any other zone. There is no card in the game whose Oracle text says that it "enters" the Graveyard or Library.

@@researchinbreeder The rules for what “enters the battlefield” means are identical to “put into the graveyard” the only distinction between them besides what zone it is is the term used in the formatting. They are functionally identical, “enters” as spoken shorthand is interchangeable

Smugglers surprise “puts” creatures onto the battlefield, so obviously those creatures don’t trigger enter the battlefield abilities.

not really. "the battlefield" was never needed to make the idea of entering make sense, it just may confuse players who are used to seeing "enters the battlefield"

I think this makes sense too. Remember when I first started playing Magic, I was surprised such a common type of effect didn't have a keyword and had to rely on such a long bit of text to convey its message. Do agree though, E doesn't have the same ring to it as ETB 😂

If a new player read enters they will be be so confused on where the entering matters Enters the graveyard? Enters the hand? As a seasoned player it makes sense But it causes weird confusion for those who don’t religiously follow the rules to know everything.

I noticed this change on a few other spoiled cards, but nobody has pointed it out yet. I think it makes sense. A lot of people already simply say, "When my creature enters, it does a thing." That or, "...ETB's" because they're LAZY COWARDS!

Because it was unnecessary. Wouldn't be surprised if tutor effects no longer said shuffle your library like what yugioh did a long time ago.

Can it enter anywhere else? Does it enter the graveyard if it's discarded instead of getting killed in the battlefield?

Good. I've always thought that "enters the battlefield" was way too clunky to repeat a lot (which is why nobody uses that whole phrase in real life). The whole reason a lot of complexity can happen in Magic without confusing the hell out of people is keywords. It takes a set of interactions and associates them to a single word, making cards much easier to read and understand, and once you understand the keyword, you pretty much instinctively understand how it works outside of edge cases. Yes, its ambiguous if you read it as a word and not a keyword. But for the record, I don't think the word "enter" has ever been used for any zone other than the battlefield. For something that goes to the yard from the field, it "dies". For something that can go to the yard from any zone, it's "put into the graveyard from anywhere" (if that becomes more common, we could have a keyword for that too). For something that goes from the field to any other zone, it's "leaves the battlefield". For something that goes into your hand it's "drawn" or "put into your hand". "Enter" has only ever been used for the battlefield.

It just makes me think of cards like Sauron lord of the rings where it says when this spell is cast not what it enters and I feel like this can cause confusion

This might be a problem for new players enters the battlefield is after the stack is resolved and the spell cast. But a new player might think of this as enters play, i.e. the second the spell can be interacted with on the stack. Not the biggest issue for this specific card but sure to cause confusion for other cards, especially for cards that care about other things etbing

A similar change is happening with linked abilities such as on [[Iridescent Vinelasher]] which reads, “when a land enters under your control this creature deals 1 damage to target opponent.” Which differs from the usual wording of repeating the cards name. I think this Is due to the offspring mechanic which could lead to questions about how this card would interact with a copy of itself

I don't really like this. Essentially 'enter' is now reserved for only the battlefield zone. But there are other rules for cards 'entering' the command zone or 'other zones' so those rules are now invalid. Cards can no longer 'enter' the command zone, only be put there.
