After 16 years of faithful service from my IPF Spotlights, I am retiring them. I'm replacing them with a 22" HardKorr XDD-650 Gen-4 LED Lightbar.
Thus far very happy with the light output and spread mounted on my Land Rover Defender 110. Day and night difference. Let's see how it holds up over the coming years.

Great to see you back Brett. I purchased Fyrlyt driving lights for my Land Rover as a replacement for my old IPF lights. I did try a light bar but I found the halogen light to be easier on the eyes if I’m using the auxiliary driving lights for any length of time. Good luck with your new lights. Thanks Paul

Nice video quality. It would be good to hear more about the overheating problems, I'm sure it can't be the old lights restricting the airflow after 16 years. You may need to replace the thermostat, water pump and give the radiator a flush and clean (it would make great content with your refreshing no-nonsense, and practical style). Also, looking forward to watching some more of your adventures out bush.
@RoamingTheOutback

already replaced a few things, so expect it to be the radiator. Just a flush and clean should get it going right again. Thanks.

@@RoamingTheOutback Besides a flush, check if all your fins are there and clear not blocked. A mate(300tdi) and me(200tdi) went off roading in D1s. We got covered in mud. When I got home I used a airline to blow the shit outta the rad cos I couldn't be arse washing it. My mate didn't. He was on nights. Que a call at stupid o'clock "R,sole I've broke down can you help". When I got there it'd overheated. While letting it cool down we started working out why. Besides his lead foot the rad was blocked with mud. Cooled, we refilled it and drove till it got 3/4 hot and decide to tow it. Once cleared the 300tdi ran well again. You know 300tdi's are tough if it can stand his lead foot and mechanical fucknucklery. Keep up the good work mate👍🏻

@@RoamingTheOutback if you wanna really flush the cooling system and get the radiator clean, try running some oxalic acid through the system for awhile. back in the day it was sold as gm heavy duty radiator flush. these days its just wood bleach, well sometimes its sold as wood bleach. WIll acid clean but not attack any metals or plastics. Fantastic stuff. Run water and that for a few hours, then drain and flush with water a few times.

Awesome video mate. I’m still running Hella Rallye 2000 Spotlights with 24v 100W bulbs on my Safari. I love them to bits and find that they provide just the right amount of light combined with being great on the eyes too. Light bars have always been on the list to try and I may have to now...

Two comments: 1. I hope you have a fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery. The circuit breaker in the video seems to be close to the light bar. 2. The standard LR copper radiator is marginal under adverse conditions. You could think about a high performance Al radiator. i found this to be a necessary upgrade.
@RoamingTheOutback
@RoamingTheOutback 2 жыл бұрын
hi Bill. Yes that manual circuit breaker is only a foot from the battery. I have researched aluminium radiators in the past but they usually got bad feedback from users saying they deteriorate quickly compared to copper. How have you found the longevity? Any brand you recommend? Thanks

@@RoamingTheOutback Hi Brett, I have struggled to decide which is the best radiator for my Defender. The cooling is marginal under difficult conditions but this isn't helped because I have two smallish spotlights and a Hilift jack on the front bumper. However under the most arduous conditions off road one is using a lot of power with slow forward motion so the obstructions probably don't make a lot of difference to the airflow. Undoubtedly Al radiators are more fragile than Cu radiators but they do provide better cooling. One cannot afford to let the engine boil, particularly in your case because the 200 Tdi has an Al head, if I am correct. If it overheats even once the head is likely to warp. I bought my radiator from a UK company called Allisport which probably only exports to Australia by special order. I did have problems with the first radiator but they took the matter very seriously, strengthened it in the weak area and provided a free replacement. Whilst I would have preferred not to have had any problems to me it's very important to deal with a company which stands behind its products. In my case I need the extra cooling and will stick with the Allisport radiator.

Hi Brett, hope you have been keeping well! On the subject of radiators and cooling, I have a aluminium allisport xl radiator installed on my 200tdi. They also have standard size available, but since I have a front mounted xl intercooler it made sense for me to get the to get the xl radiator. I have had it since Oct 2019 and has worked really well, has transformed the cooling, so far in my experience I have had no issues with it. But yes I was skeptical at first as there are quite a lot of negative reviews on aluminium radiators in land rovers, but i decided to take the gamble and thankfully its paid off nicely

What about inadvertent eye strain from the two different light colours/temperatures ?
@RoamingTheOutback
@RoamingTheOutback 2 жыл бұрын
I'll know more with more night driving experience. Haven't noticed anything as of yet. More like less eye strain as everything is lit up, compared to peering down a road with just the spotlights and wondering if that's a cow or a tree trunk on the side of the road.

@@RoamingTheOutback One option (if you think its needed) is to simply change the colour temp of your head lights. You might find it's all good from the start. See how you go. Cheers :-)

I need an excuse to do some long drives at night. My few drives thus far were just incredible at how much I could see. Definitely anything bigger than 22" I thing would be too bright for a lot of driving. Time will tell how they work out.
