Goodbye, Rolex Explorer 39mm: The Bittersweet Lesson (Review)

A Discussion around the Rolex Explorer and my experience with the watch after 3+ months. The Lessons about "To Kill Your Darlings" and "Falling in Love with Narrative" can sometimes blind us to how we really feel. In the case of the Explorer (in the 39mm size) I expected it to be a watch that could close my chapter off with Modern Rolex, a "One and Done". Sadly, it never stayed on my wrist long enough.

The Explorer is beginning luxury for many, but for me, it's the signature piece in my collection. The design is timeless and will always remain a favorite, even as my tastes inevitability change. It's kind of like fashion. Trends come and go, but a T-shirt and jeans is eternally cool. That's kind of how I feel about the Explorer.

I first bought the explorer 39mm in 2016.. I felt it was a great watch, but my watch journey just started and like the Speedmaster the explorer was just a staple, so I sold it off in a few months. I got it back last year after cycling through almost every sports model Rolex out there. My conclusion - You are never going to find a more tool Rolex than this. Yes 38mm would have been a better size, but Rolex decided this year to make it in 36mm because it caters to both men and women. Sales triumphs over perfection....And that makes the 39mm now the perfect watch.

Amazing how it comes down to a millimetre or two in width or thickness to make or break a watch. For me, a 1016 from the early Sixties with a glossy dial on a riveted bracelet is the Explorer holy grail. Even though I have a strong preference for vintage watches, I find myself wearing my 39 mm Explorer more often than not, and it has become my go-to watch. Curious to see what the next model will look like (I fear 41mm only). Long live the Explorer.

I understand Rolex moving with trends but there is just something about the explorer in the 36mm case size which feels as though it’s being truthful to itself and genuinely honouring it’s past whereas the newer 39mm doesn’t feel like an organic evolution in my opinion

As I‘m ain’t a Rolex fan boy, the brand has left my territory a long time ago when they decided to go luxury with just raising the prices... The Explorer is one of the last real toolwatches in their lineup, but with a price around 6k € it’s in luxury territory without the luxury touch... What makes it a tool watch, and not simply a watch?
@emc3065
@emc3065 3 жыл бұрын
@@xpusostomos It comes from the past when watches were designed with a specific purpose in mind. For example, the Submariner was originally a dive watch designed specifically for deep sea divers and there were very few more critical tools for a diver than his dive watch. Others like the GMT - Airline Pilots, Explorer II - Cavers as a small example. Like Porsche, Rolex maintains much if it's design language from previous watches in its line up and can't move too heavily away from their lineage. However, so many of its Tool Watches have been "Luxurised" and turned into expensive jewelry, moving away from their original utilitarian tool design. The Explorer I is the last Rolex that still hasn't moved too far away from its original tool design. A simple watch that is easy to read and could survive freezing temperatures when mountaineering.
@xpusostomos
@xpusostomos 3 жыл бұрын
@@emc3065 I'm not sure that grabbing a marketing opportunity to profit off Sir Edmund Hillarys endorsement counts as designing it for a particular purpose. The sub is water resistant and has the dive bezel. The explorer.... Has nothing. It has the same movement as every other Rolex so is no more or less likely to survive freezing temperatures than an Airking.

I left my 214270 39mm Explorer in the drawer for two months, I had a new love (16600) I wondered if I really wanted it. I put it on again this week and fell in love with it all over again, It's simplicity and understatedness are part of the reason I bought it. I absolutely love it and will never sell it. A white dialled explorer should never happen. If you put a white dial on it it is no longer an Explorer. It is one of the oldest watches in the Rolex catalogue, I can't see it getting a radical makeover.

I feel like your analysis of the 214270 kind of sums up modern Rolex in general. They used to be great because of the stories behind them, they journeys they go through. But today, they have lost that spark. Rolexes are no longer built with a purpose, they're built to sell. The modern Explorer shows that in spades compared to the 1016. Which is why I'm really happy that I was recently able to buy a Smiths Everest, a 36mm like the one you have. We both have what we want already, it just doesn't say Rolex on the dial.

@@pasha12343 "do you think a lot of modern produced items have become a little sterile ?" Yes, for the same reason. But we do tend to suffer from survivor bias. There were lots of terrible, uninspired watches in the past. But those are not around anymore because they either broke or people threw them away. Same goes for cars and motorcycles (Austin Allegro!). Not only that, I'll give you two counter-examples. My single most favourite watch of all time comes from 2014, the Van Cleef & Arpels Planetarium. And if that's too expensive to compare to Rolex, one of my other favourites is from 1991, the Lange 1. So there's plenty of new stuff being made that's great too, just for other reasons.

Simultaneously, your watch journey can finally begin to wonder beyond the horizons you’ve established subconsciously for years now, anchored further in narrative and less than in “feel”. All the best as barriers continue to crumble and your personal taste articulates itself using new emotional paradigms as opposed to historical contextualizations or design efficiencies. Bravo on the journey. And great guitar picking!

Another great video and I agree. I think this past year made me want an Explorer much more than I ever did. Watching YT reviews over and over and over certainly affected my opinions. I began to seriously search for one on the grey market/flippers/eBay/etc.. I almost convinced myself that shelling out $7k - $9k (or more) was worth it. But in the end, I simply couldn't do it. It was too much money for a stainless steel watch. I imagined what I would feel if I had paid, say $8k for a MKII in nearly pristine condition. I'd feel a little foolish because I had fallen into the rabbit hole of Rolex fanboy/enthusiast/collector's opinions. They had sung the praises of an iconic watch with stentorian voices and over time, I began to sing along, too. This thing is: I was never in that choir. In the end, I realized I had to remember that I never really liked the watch that much. It is a great piece, but not at the price. This video is one of those vary rare videos that matches my sentiments. Thank you.

I get what he's saying. I had a 214270 for 2 years, and I loved it and loathed it in equal measure. I loved the 3 6 9 the markers and the lume, but began to wish the unflattering, basic matt face behind gave more back. I loved the shape of the watch on my wrist, the understated sporty nature, but hated the overly-wide slightly overhanging scratch-magnet bezel. Why did they flatten and widen it from the previous model? I also think given there is no complication the face is just too large for the requirement. It has a fantastic bracelet especially with easilink which the older 36s haven't got. Having seen this vid i miss it in my collection but, I got tired of trying to ignore the things that grated on me, so I flipped it. If they fixed the dial and the bezel and bought out a 37/8 then I'm grabbing one.
@StevenHancz
@StevenHancz 3 жыл бұрын
ID Guy I agree with you. The watch "sounds" better on paper than it does in real life. Don't get me wrong it is a Rolex that alone is enough to hold it's own. But not enough to stand out. The watch makes sense in a collection where the owner has a number of other watches and once in a while he just wants to fly under the radar. But for someone as the only watch it is not enough. From a design perspective the bezel and lugs combination is just too much flat real-estate. If the watch was to be smaller ( say 37mm ) and had smaller lugs the flat steel surface in proportion to the dial area would work better. From a performance/value perspective the new OP models are a better choice. The new OPs have more color options a better movement and a more modern appearance. The watch is relevant but only for what it stood for in the past. So it is a collectors watch not a daily users watch.

I ordered my Explorer 3 months ago and it arrived last week. Yes only had to wait 3 months. I ordered this watch over the sub because it was so understated and the quality is just superb. The real surprise for me was that it feels much smaller on the wrist than expected due to the tapered strap. I must admit I was expecting it to look big but it isn’t which is a really nice surprise. The down side is the cost but I suppose it’s all part of the mystery and packaging when buying a Rolex. We all complain and whinge like hell when having to wait for one so when it does finally arrive it sort of makes it’s all worth it. Am disappointed? Absolutely not. For three reasons - It’s a beautiful watch, it’s worth more now than when I brought it, and knowing my son will both love and appreciate it when I hand it down to him, can’t say that about a timex!

I felt similarly underwhelmed when I tried on the 39mm Explorer I at the local AD. Thought it was going to be the one for me. A year (and a bunch of watches) later, I got a polar Milgauss and am smitten. It's a journey, not a destination.

I love my BB36, which I bought sort of as a budget Explorer. I recently tried on an 114270, what had been my grail watch, and I was underwhelmed. It may have grown on me over time. But my BB36 has already done that for me. The 1016 would be a different story - maybe a 50th birthday gift to myself. Thanks for the video-

Great video that articulates what alot of watch nerds like you and i have experienced. The internal dialogue hype we convince ourselves of I had the same experience with the explorer 1. I’ve bought a few “must have” watches over the past 3 years: speedy, explorer 1, 41mm datejust, pelagos...all in the name of searching for the perfect “fit”....after all that my favourite watch of all? A plain black Seiko Turtle 777. Go figure

I tried the 39 version a few years ago and was very underwhelmed. Ended up buying a few other watches along the line. Yet, I couldn’t forget the Explorer as most of the pictures I saw of it were screaming ‘BUY ME’. Then I found it, I only needed the 36mm version. Bought the 114270. A total different watch, other proportions, just spot on. I got that watch now for a few years and it remains my favorite. Every look at it fires my love for it. Long story short; as much as I love the 36mm version, as much as I dislike the 39mm version. Do try the 36 is what I would suggest. Great video!

@StuntpilootStef summed this up SO well in their comment that your analysis kind of sums up modern Rolex in general. No longer built for a purpose of adventure for great stories, Rolex’s are churned out purely to sell. I know that you are happy with your Smiths Everest. Although a homage to a Rolex from a past time, it doesn’t need to say Rolex on the dial, it looks just as good as one at a fraction of the price. Another great video here my friend. I do not think that I will ever be satisfied with "one" watch. I haven't yet found that "perfect" watch. I'm wearing a friend's two tone Sub right now; a late 80s piece. It's cool and all but I'm not enamored enough by it to want to go buy one. And sadly, that's what Rolex makes you think. It makes you think that you "need" a Rolex; that you haven't experienced anything greater. I will keep trying to convince myself that I really don't need want one.

While I do not agree with all of your points here, I really appreciate you questioning the validity of assigning value to watches based upon horology. It's a fair argument and there is something to be said. I also recognize your argument regarding the "cliche" aspect of the Rolex Explorer and how it relates to "To Kill Your Darlings", but I respectfully disagree with this. I genuinely don't think the Explorer is cliche, but rather classy and modest. It's a fine line to be walking, but I understand your opinion and I thank you for sharing. Great video!

The thing is people shouldn’t be deriving their identity from an object. An object that you buy does not define you neither does it tell anything about you. You are ultimately just a consumer. People talking about soul of an object or the heritage are simply bought into the marketing by the company that owning such an object somehow rubs the greatness or some attribute of the people who have owned similar things in the past onto you. That’s pure marketing.

i'm afraid that people stating that the piece will feel differently after you have invested in it may unknowingly be referring to the sunk cost fallacy. after sacrificing and saving and finally spending ~8k on a grail watch, many might feel _obligated_ to feel good about their purchase.

@@michelemilanese2487 the concept of sunk cost fallacy does not necessarily apply to money spent vs retained monetary value. it's the idea that any currency spent, be it time, money, sacrifice, discomfort, etc, lends itself to the percieved value and often encourages defending said expenditure. e.g. time spent playing a bad video game leading to defense of said game is a real phenomenon in the gaming community.

I recently had the epiphany that I might value ‘durable’ watches and loathe scratching them out of fear of death/finality. I don’t want to lose this precious thing. Then I thought, but I will. And then there will be another thing. And so to wear the watch is to live while dying. To know that the case will dent. The bracelet will deform and so will I.

I can relate to this experience with a number of watches I have had over 5 decades. For those seasoned collectors among us, to pay the prices people are asking for Rolex models these days, there is so much better and cheaper out there. The Omega Aqua Terra METAS COSC either the 41mm 8900 60 hr PR Caliber or 38mm 8800 55 hr PR Caliber will be so much better for you. The difference between the two being the adjustment for the date and hour hand at the first pull out crown stop. The 8900 is like a true GMT for changing the hour backwards or forwards without disturbing or hacking the minute or seconds. The 8800 which is also in the Seamaster Master 300 M is like normal. Pick one up used LNIB before the prices skyrocket!

Agree with many that say this is overpriced. At $6,500 (MSRP) I already thought it was too high for what it was: stainless steel three-hander. It's classic good looks and rock solid performance made me seriously hunt for this watch. Sadly, I always returned home empty-handed. I considered paying the Flipper Tax at $7,300 (or a little more), but just couldn't do it. Now, I've seen prices of $7,500/$8,500/$9,500 on eBay/Chrono24/etc. No way. Seeing that high made me realize that even $6,500 was too much for what it was. Fan boy & enthusiast accolades aside, much of the value of this watch is the brand name. I know my watches and it's not not understating, it's knowing that I would eventually regret spending $6,500 + tax on a pretty basic watch--even though that is the point. I'm not a precious metal guy nor am I a gemstone guy. However, if I am going to shell out that much money I sure as h*ll want to bond with it. And, I just don't think I would.

It's interesting that my opinion is completely different than the ID Guy. I have owned an Explorer 214270 for almost a year and have worn it quite extensively. I find that the watch's proportion to be almost perfect and I love the fact that it doesn't stand out. With the mix of simple design and polished parts, I think the watch also manages to be an excellent middle-ground between sports and dress watch. In fact, I like the Explorer so much that I start finding flaws in other watches, even in other Rolex models like the Submariner and the GMT Master. I'm not saying that there are no better watch out there but I personally think to get something better than Explorer I need to spend 2 - 3 times more to get something like an AP or Patek.

@@eyeheartsushi2212 but maybe we’re looking at it all wrong. What if, rather than an instantaneous “lightning bolt” realization, the process is more akin to a gradual realization. A realization that develops with expert Ed that we have with the time piece. Truth be told, if we get struck my lightning wearing an Invicta, we probably won’t sell it (ok...maybe I would). But that’s a far fetched example which serves to show that the purpose of a timepiece is perhaps a reminder to get out, experience the world, and use the watch to remind us of those experiences. Things get really philosophical when you consider what time really is? One the one hand, we’ll fight hand over fist to get a watch..... but will we utilize the time that it tells in a meaningful way?? Will the sweep of the seconds hand reflect a life well lived??

Honestly, I quite enjoy all your content but I stumbled on this one because I was just at my AD and tried on the new "40mm" Explorer as well as the current 36mm version, and wonder how your experience might have differed with the alterations that came with this newer version. It's been a while since I tried the 39mm version, but on my wrist the new bracelet looked much more in proportion, as did the new crown and hands. The anti-reflective treatment to the crystal was also very noticeable. I'm still on the fence and you encapsulated much of my reason for hesitance. My AD has assured me that he can get me one without much delay and he has worked his magic in the past. Still I hesitate. The stealthiness has a strong appeal allied to the solidity and feel of the clasp and bracelet. Time will tell, I guess. Keep up the great work and please feel free to include more blues riffs to your content!
