The real Henry Hill used to call the Howard Stern show sometimes. He was a tortured miserable awful person in real life who died an addict and unhappy. The guy "Spider" they killed was never found and his family still has no closure. Hill knew where they put that poor guy and never told anyone. Spider's sister would call the show when Henry was on. When I was a kid, my mom decided to go back to school to finish her degree. So on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Dad had us, so our Tuesday ritual was going to the local second-run dollar theater. It was a small 3-screen theater, and sometimes all the flicks would be R-rated. That was the situation the night he took me to see this. I remember on the drive home, he told me “Don’t tell your mother I let you watch this,” but I thought it was awesome. Even to this day, it’s one of my desert island top 5 flicks.

Another movie you might want to check out is Mean Streets. Its an early low budget masterpiece by Scorsese that is both his first gangster movie and his first movie with Deniro who frickin knocks it out of the park. This movie sets up the iconic collaboration between Deniro and Scorsese that is actually still going on today. And then of course theres Taxi Driver, which is not gangster so much but does show us the seedy underbelly of life on the streets with gangsterism in it.

I like that this was the film where we finally get to see Paul Sorvino as a badass. For 2 decades before, he was always cast as the “frustrated supervisor” type role. Usually, he was a police commissioner or a bureaucrat who had just had too much and was praying for just a few stress free days. Although, he did shine in the early 80s in the film adaptation of the play “That Championship Season.” That play was his passion project. He was in the Broadway cast, the film, and even directed the remake in the late 90s. Both versions of the film adaptation are awesome, btw.

Scorsese does other non-gangster films. Two of the best are Taxi Driver-written by the brilliant Paul Schrader-and The Age of Innocence, based on the Edith Wharton novel. It’s worth mentioning, too, that the unique look of Goodfellas is due to the cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, who worked with Scorsese on many of his films.

Oh yes , I remember in the 40s , he head of the five families ( leader of the mob ) was sent to prison. He had a wing to himself, food delivered from the ritz Hotel ( just previous home ), his furniture, his bed , and a private phone. Alcohol, cigars all his creature conforts.

After reading the book, I wondered why most of the book wasn't in the movie. The Air-France caper could have been a movie by itself.

I'd argue that Scorcese's best works are actually his non-gangster films: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Bringing Out the Dead, and The King of Comedy.

Yes this is a true story. The book is more detailed and they embellished some stuff and changed the order of certain events for the movie. But it's basically true. The FBI agent at the end that put them in witness protection is the actual agent that did this case in real life, fun fact.

This one was great. But remember Rats can’t be on top of the food chain on the Gangster life style. My favorite gangster movies are Hoffa(1992) The Departed, Dick Tracy(1990) and American Gangster(Denzel Washington).

One of the all time rewatch movies. Doesn’t matter where it is, if I see it on tv, at any point, I’m watching it. Such a great movie. And I love how the music mostly matches up with the era & I think that really underscores the wonderful pacing. Each of the “eras” is defined and gets you invested in each piece & also the overall story. Epic film.

"They really had different prison for gangsters?" That's part of why "don't snitch" was so effective - everyone *expected* to do some time and if you did they *took care* of you. First of all, you get big shot lawers that get you the best deal possible without snitching, and then inside, you got special treatment, protection, contraband, hookers for conjugal visits, if you were supporting a family working for them, they'd set your family up with a stipend until you got out; aside from the lousy scenery, it was kind of a vacation for them

There are tons of Scorsese movies that are legendary. In particular, I'd recommend Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) for his earliest award winner, a drama starring the mom from The Exorcist, plus Silence (2016), a religious drama starring Andrew Garfield, and Gangs of New York (2002), which will give you a hard taste of Americanism lol. Further shout outs to Taxi Driver (1976) and The Departed (2006). If you become tempted to watch Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear (1991), please watch the original (1962) first!! It'd make for a great side by side comparison.

Some of the scenes in this film are some of the most iconic of all-time. Such a masterpiece in terms of first person storytelling and pacing. I love Godfather 2. It's a much slower paced film but the two different story lines paralleling each other is and always will be a classic.

No Jenny, Jimmy Conway, whose real name was Jimmy Burke, died in prison in 1996, 7.5 years before he was eligible for parole. Henry Hill left the witness protection program and was a frequent guest on the Howard Stern Show before he died in 2012. He struggled with alcoholism and was often drunk when he was calling into Howard's show. You can find some of the clips here on KZfaq.

I've read Wiseguy and it's a great book. Scorsese has made lots of films .... certainly not all of them are Mafia films but lots of his films are tough subject matter. Watch "Raging Bull" that came out in 1980. The American Film Institute declared it the greatest film of the 1980's. And "Taxi Driver" is perhaps Scorseses most controversial film. A must see!

My suggestion is not a gangster movie. In fact, it's the side of the equation - police corruption. You should check out Al Pacino in an Oscar winning performance as real life whistle blower cop Paul Serpico in 1973's "Serpico."

The scary thing about Tommy is that the real-life gangster he's based on was even more pyscho that in the film. Dude shot a random stranger on the street just to test out his new gun.

Henry Hill at first would call the Howard Stern Radio show & then later would show up out of the blue . He was ether drunk or high & would answer phone callers questions & even talk shit with gangsters who called to threaten him . Spiders sister once called in to beg him to reveal where spiders body was , so the family could bury him . Many of the shows are on KZfaq & you can listen to them now
