This is basically 90% true story and the real Henry Hill died in 2012. The creator the Sopranos called this movie his handbook for creating the perfect Mafia story. It’s not coincidence that so many actors from Goodfellas appeared in the Sopranos

It all depends. I tend to believe Michael franzese when he says that Henry was a lost soul. Even the movie kind of shows this. Also him being way more involved than he actually was. And also the movie doesn’t show how multiple times Henry tried to get out of the life as he realizes where it would eventually lead. I don’t think that prison scene is accurate though.

And a lot of the Italians emigrated though Ellis Island and lacked papers/passport so they got their papers stamped WOP

There was more to the killing of Billy Batts than just his insult to Tommy about shining shoes. While Billy was in prison, Jimmy (De Niro) had taken over Billy's lucrative bookmaking business. Now that Billy was out of prison, he wanted that business back. DeNiro's character didn't want to give it up, so he wanted Batts dead as much as Tommy. He had his own reasons.

It's also pretty laughable how many reactors to this film are surprised he's gaslighting and cheating on her. He's a freakin' mobster that robs, hurts, and even kills people for a living, is it really that unbelievable that he would cheat on his wife too? Some of these viewers need to get out of their puritan bubble for a second and start accepting reality.

I was talking with a driving instructor during a course for the Marine Corps a few years ago and he said 2 wives is a terrible idea because it’s two sets of problems basically but said 30 wives is perfect because you have one for everyday of the month and each day is a new beginning. At this time of his career Samuel L Jackson's roles were cameos mostly. He usually played a scumbag,a sleaze, or a junkie. His career didn't take off until Pulp Fiction. On another note I loved all the characters in this movie. Most of all Paul Sorvino. He reminded me so much of my late Grandfather.

Probably a false etymology. The term was current before there was any such thing as immigration papers. Wikipedia quotes Merriam-Webster dictionary to say it derives ultimately from "the Southern Italian dialectal term 'guappo', roughly meaning 'dandy', or 'swaggerer'".

when Karen gets scared and runs away from Jimmy, the camera pans up and we see 2 street signs "one way" pointing to the inside of the building, and "dont walk". Scorsese is a genius with little touches like that.

Now you should see My Blue Heaven, starring Steve Martin as a mobster in the witness protection program being guarded by Rick Moranis as an FBI agent. It is hysterical. But it also was based on the story of Henry Hill. It was written by Nora Ephron (she wrote When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle), who was married to Nicolas Pileggi, who wrote Goodfellas. The two movies came out in the same month based on the same story but are lightyears apart in tone.

Now you need to watch My Blue Heaven(1990) It's a comedy about what happens to a gangster when they enter Witness Protection. It was written by the wife of the writer of Goodfellas, and written at the same time. Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and Joan Cusack. It's a good time.

The fact that Joe Pesci did GOODFELLAS and HOME ALONE 1 in the same year is astounding (he won Best Supporting Actor for GOODFELLAS too)! Side Note: After LETHAL WEAPON 4, Joe Pesci went into semi-retirement. Since then, he has only done 5 movies and 1 TV show. One such film is the Netflix film THE IRISHMAN, also directed by Martin Scorsese and co-starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino (I really liked it personally).

12:10 - This famous "long shot" was in the first time a director used a "steadicam" in films in this way. They were around since 1976, but no one ever thought to use one for one continuous long shot like this until this movie. I remember it was talked about a lot back then. I was in film school at that time, and the instructors kept talking about it too, lol. The shot was just under 3 minutes long. Of course other directors followed suit after this and did similar long, uninterrupted steadicam shots, but this was the granddaddy of them all. lol

@@ShawNshawN - He likely did have 'long shots' in his film, but they were either traditional handheld camera shots, or dolly shots, and nowhere near as long as this famous shot in Goodfellas. I was specifically referring to the "Steadicam" (a very particular invention) that didn't come onto the scene until after Hitchcock's last known directorial work which was "Family Plot" in 1976. I'm sure had Hitchcock had an opportunity, he would have used it, but it wasn't around for him to use it during his active years in the business. The Steadicam wasn't introduced to the public, nor put into full commercial use until about '75. And the technology wasn't as perfected as it was until it was used around the time of the making of Goodfellas. Hence, why Martin Scorsese had his D.P. use it to make this now famous cinematic shot, which was consequently called "The Copa Shot". It was a one-take shot that was at least three minutes long. I was in film school around the time Goodfellas was released, and I remember my professors talking a great deal about that shot, and of course the technology involved. From what I remember, the same person (Garrett Brown) who invented the Steadicam is also the one who would later invent the "Skycam" during the 80s, which is often used at arena, and sporting events such as the NFL. 🙂

you might want to consider going back even further to watch older gangster flicks. 1967's "bonnie and clyde" is the film that brought the gangster genre into the modern age. in the late 40s cagney starred in "white heat" and bogart starred in "key largo" which co-starred edward g. robinson as the gangster. in 1939 bogart and cagney starred together in the classic "the roaring twenties." in the early 30s the film "public enemy" made cagney a star. and paul muni was excellent playing an "al capone" type character in "scarface." all these films are really, really good and come higly recommended. give them a try. i think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

michael franzese who was mentioned in the movie(not the actual guy, he has youtube channel) said that henry hill was never so important that he got to go in through the kitchen and also michael franzese saved henry hill's life 3 times by not informing on him to the mobster when he was taking drugs or was in witness protection while in the slammer

Robert DeNiro insisted on using real money when he was tipping in order to make his Gangster persona seem more authentic. At the end of the day, Scorsese would triple count the set amount of money used in those scenes and wouldn't let anyone, cast or crew, leave until it was all accounted for. Just like a real Gangster. 😂

Not to mention she clearly saw what kind of guy he is, but yet still stayed with him and got married. Lets skip over the fact as well she has two kids with her while yelling obscenities and being a crazy lady at his mistresses apartment building. Also a side note the real life wife was sleeping around behind his back with Paulie, she is no saint ,she knew everything they did. In typical fashion though she is given a pass and is somehow the victim.

His narration brings so much to Goodfellas, and the scene where he slides out of the court box breaking the 4th wall is so smooth. You would enjoy Ray in Heartbreakers, with Sigourney Weaver, and Operation Dumbo Drop, with Danny Glover

The book that this film was based on was called Wiseguy. That originally was going to be the name of the movie, however, at the time there was a TV show on the air called Wiseguy and to make sure there was not any confusion, they decided to make the name change to Goodfellas

If you liked this one. I would recommend Casino with Deniro and Pesci or The Departed with Leo Dicaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. Both movies were directed by Martin Scorsese

Henry outlived everyone he knew in that group. To the point that the ones who took over rescinded the bounty on Henry’s head allowing him to be out in public without looking over his shoulder and being able to do many interviews for many documentaries about what happened or on other gangs

The guy who played "Fat Andy" in the scene where Henry is introducing all of the members of the crew was Louis Eppolito, a corrupt cop who took part in kidnappings and at least one murder for the mob. He got arrested some years after his bit part in this movie and ended up dying in prison, along with his partner, who was also corrupt.

Trivia: When "Paulie" unexpectedly slaps "Henry" in the face, that scene was improved and Paul Sorvino totally caught Ray Liotta off guard. That's why Ray Liotta looks so shocked, like "WTF"?!?! Classic Scorsese secret directorial!

Check out Scorsese's "Casino" (another true story) which came out in 1995 and is sort of a companion piece to this. The cinematic style is similar. De Niro and Pesci also star.

This stuff is so far from Mary's world I knew it would be classic to watch. Lol. Great reaction. With Mafia movies they're ALL toxic, cheating on their wives and on drugs. That's the trope. Ironic thing is Billy Blats and the kid both killed by Tommy were pretty brutal themselves in The Sopranos series. Karen was the therapist and played so wholesome. Lmao

It wasn't really a shoe shine thing. In real life, it was about Bats getting out of jail and wanting his territories that Tommy and Jimmy had taken over. Gambling, loansharking, etc. Goodfellars was a true story, but the movie characters were not as bad as the real-life people. Especially Tommy believe it or not. It's my favorite movie.

James Conway died in prison in 1996, six years after the film was released. It's funny that the movie doesn't portray Henry Hill's craziest personal story. Right before getting arrested and joining the witness protection program, he ran off to Vegas with another woman and got married despite still being married to Karen. It's crazy that still went into witness protection together and didn't get officially divorced until the early 00s.

The real Spider was buried in the basement of that building along with some other people. When the police finally raided it, Jimmy just got done cementing the basement cause he just moved the bodies the night before. The real Tommy was a giant and it wasn't just Billy Bats that got him wacked, there was another guy I believe he either was a Made Guy or related to one. Also it wasn't just Tommy they killed, they went after one of his brothers. They still haven't found Billy Bats.

One of the all time great movies. Bronx Tale is prob my all time gangster movie along with the Godfather 1 & 2. I grew up in Howard Beach so it was “mob” influenced but it was far from this era. Now its all but barely there. This was my dads era.

A "Wop" is a slur against Italians. While the epilogue says that Jimmy Conway would be eligible for parole in 2004, James Burke (who the character was based off on) died of cancer in prison in 1996. Henry Hill died in 2012.

I've read the book Wiseguy, quite a lot is left out of the film but Henry went through everything to convert to Judaism so he could marry Karen. Also, you asked how their system was set up, there were kind of minor Italian mafias in New York in the 19th and early 20th Centuries but when Prohibition started those mafias became quite wealthy and these criminals were always looking for new rackets, it's what they did all day!
