I think the term “low waste” sounds more attainable, “zero waste” sounds so daunting and probably isn’t attainable at all?

Exactly! Zero waste isn't actually making -zero- waste, but rather making as little waste as you are able to. The name is just misleading

Unless you live on a farm, make all your own products and don't travel, you can never be fully "zero waste." It's more about doing your part, reducing your waste where you can, and not giving large companies (the biggest polluters in society) a reason to continue churning out single-use items! Good luck!

I can understand but I would suggest, if you try low waste and then u can gradually find your way to zero waste; but thinking of zero waste directly can be daunting!

I just realized, I've done a lot of these things all my life but not because I'm zero waste but because I'm working class. No take outs, tap water, farmers market, reusable bags, yep all check.

littlekiwinelson Many people just drink from the tap in USA as well, however if you actually study about it, you’ll realize the tap water is really not clean or healthy to drink

Julia Michaelis I didn’t say it was, but many places don’t have clean water out of the USA to. And I mentioned the USA specifically because that’s where the people in the video are I believe. For example, I believe in 2019 the UK found micro plastics in their water

I was angry when the small community where I live stopped offering recycling! Also there is no farmers market, & the few close- by stores offer limited vegan foods. Haven't met a vegetarian much less a vegan since I moved here a year ago. No reason to give up of course! Ammenities such as recycling, farmers markets, & vegan centric stores would just make life easier in these pandemic times.

@@pamelaminor696 You're better off not buying processed vegan food. It's not healthy. The recycle center where I live keeps changing what they will/won't accept. I was super upset when they quit taking light bulbs & batteries. It's very frustrating.

Why is it called zero waste instead of low waste? I feel like less people would be intimidated by the lifestyle if it was called low waste.

Yesss, I believe it’s impossible to be zero waste. Like even the small things, food samples, public bathrooms , toilet paper, feminine products, protection , etc.

The Zero-waste term actually originated for corporations producing the least amount of waste possible (down to zero) by doing things behind the scenes that produced less waste. Only recently that shift was made onto consumers of products instead of corporations. I agree with Jenny though, zero-waste sounds pretty cool and it catches more people's attention. The sad part is the forefront of the movement is "the jar" which is super intimidating. Fortunately people who really care look more into the movement realize it's not just the jar it's so many other aspects.

It's important do do all these (1) Reduce (2) reuse (3) repurpose (4) recycle AND (5) Encourage your community to do all these things. Being perfect is not the goal -- small changes in a large number of people will have an impact

I know what you mean. I've mostly shifted to trying to concentrate on my habits at home. Washing my laundry on cold and hang drying every other load cuts down as much emissions as planting a tree every week according to some studies that I found!

Awesome! You don't have to fit into a label to be eco-friendly. Zero-waste, veganism, minimalism, you can't be perfect at everything, but just do what works for you because that's what the world needs right now! I'm working to spread awareness about this to as many people as possible!

I love how this shows both the highs and the lows during the challenge. It makes it seem more realistic and human. Also emphasizing not beating yourself up for slipping once or twice(or not being complete zero waste) because like Auri said: we don’t need a few people doing it perfect, we need everyone doing it imperfectly!

for tofu and tempeh you can find it in a glass jar from the brand BIONA it saves sooo much plastic and you can get your protein in

I'm not zero waste by any means, but I've found a lot of ways to implement small things that if everyone did as well, we would have a much larger impact. I swapped my toothbrush to a charcoal bamboo toothbrush and love it, I use a cotton shower loofa that can be washed, I use a metal safety razer, I have used a reusable stainless water bottle from Tervis for years and love it, and most recently I switched to garbage bags made from sugar cane plastic. It still isn't great for the environment and sugar cane requires a lot of water, however, it is better than fossil fuel based plastic.

Sorry to disappoint you, but bamboo is actually everything but eco friendly. A large majority of bamboo is shipped from China, which is everything but eco-friendly and actually harms the planet more. Stop taking everything at face value, it's tiring. :|

@@oceanlawnlove8109 you know, there are a lot of "eco friendly" products that aren't the most eco friendly, however, one bamboo toothbrush is significantly better than one fossil fuel based plastic toothbrush that never breaks down. Stop attacking people attempting to make positive changes in the little ways they can. It's classist at best. If you've got a suggestion that is better and you can leave that suggestion kindly, go for it, otherwise, move on.

I'm OCD recycle queen ♻️ I put 90% of everything we use in the blue bins. Food scraps my brother taught me how to make my own compose area and my trash that goes to landfills are minimal. I love this. More people need to start recycling ♻️

8:41 Just to let you know, the carton for the block of tofu _can_ be recycled (just check for the little recyclable triangle sign) but they will NOT take it in if it is contaminated with the little flimsy bit of plastic on the top cover layer. This is because something is only recyclable when it contains only *one* type of material and not mixed with other materials such as soft plastic, aluminium, etc. Same for glass jars surrounded by a strip of plastic. So in actuality, takeaway coffee cups that are lined with plastic on the inside is not recyclable and neither are food packages lined with the shiny inner layer of plastic. So maybe next time, you could go that extra mile and strip the box of its plastic and wash out the contents before placing it into the bin to be recycled. Thanks :))))

Beyond burgers have a 10 pack and they’re in a cardboard box I’m not sure if it’s a recyclable box but it’s at least a lot of plastic instead of five containers for 10 burgers it’s one container for 10 just found it and love it!

I don’t yet see how this is better. Website photos show the same plastic packaging just more of them corralled inside a box along with a message: “Our packing cartons and insulation are curbside recyclable and shipped using UPS carbon neutral shipping” Anyone buy it yet and can report back if my assumptions don’t match?

I love this!! It's so inspiring 😍 Another great tip is, that you can regrow certain veggies!! For example spring onions. You just have to place the roots in a glass of water and just after one day you can see new growth ! Just make sure to change the water from time to time 🥰

We have something in Australia called RedCycle which recycles soft plastics 👌 It's great for a slow zerowaste integration when you are still finding alternatives. Interested to see what the future will bring 🌿✌️😊

A few years ago in school we had a cooking class and I was finely cutting the white part of some spring onions and a girl in my group literally yelled "Ewwwww youre gonna eat that???" and some other girls laughed at me, like hell yeah I will what is wrong with that? And I found out that most people literally only eat a few centimeters of the dark green part and throw the rest away :(

Best tip is to plant the spring onion roots in some soil. You will forever have some. Putting them in some water works too but I find that eventually it starts rotting in the water and gets smelly. When using soil, that doesn't happen to me. My spring onions are super tall now and I use them very often. Super fast regrowth

The composting thing blows my mind, I live in Ontario Canada and we have something called a “green bin” it gets picked up weekly with our recycling and everything else. It makes composting so normal so hearing about the states and how you have to take it somewhere yourself is just so foreign to me.

Can I just say, thank you SOOOO much for not coming across judgmental and trying to guilt-trip others. I really try to do my best (most days) and then there are others that I do a crappy job. I KNOW I can (and HAVE done better). It has been harder due to COVID and not being able to enter with reusable bags and everything is already prepackaged which makes it more frustrating. I hit a breaking point last week due to how my world has turned upside down and I felt like crap. Not being able to do things for ME, for the earth just hit me like a ton a bricks. I came on here to try to bring more positivity in my life and you three did it. Thank you

This is a great, very informative video, and I really like that it's all about the small, easy decisions that can be made to cut down on what waste is produced. It also feels like a strangely appropriate time to be discussing this, as making these kinds of small choices now when decreasing waste is both more difficult but also arguably more important will probably make it easier when the world goes back to normal at long last. After all, if the changes are something you can make in spite of the difficulties of quarantine, then it should be even easier when it finally ends, and more options become available, or larger changes easier to make.

My sister has worked with children with autism at different ages and classrooms will take plastic grocery bags to use for diapers! Many kids at different ages us them and it's one way to reuse the plastics that can't be recycled! Call your local schools and see if they need them!

I use them for when I scoop my cat's litter box! I also use them for trash bags in our bathroom and bedroom, where we have tiny trash cans, cause I'm not actually fully zero waste- not helpful for anyone who IS zero waste, since I assume they don't need trash bags, but useful for other people who just want to reduce waste. I thought everyone did this, I grew up doing it, but I just recently learned that not everyone does.

For anyone looking for a compost resource, Whole Foods has a composting area. Also, look into your city cuz they may have compost bins or resources for this.

I wish they'd attach the peer reviewed articles to back up their stats... I'd be interested in reading more about it and I find so many different videos say different things about what percentage gets recycled, etc. Any video putting claims out there should have to link their research!

One thing I discovered from one of my grocery stores is liquid soap in bulk. You buy a mason jar with a pump add on, then put the soap you bulk buy in there. You can put the soap in the mason jar or a compostable bowl when buying it. All plastic free!

Cooking for a week is great but imagine if we stopped buying takeouts. Think of all the jobs that would be cut and the amount of people that would be unemployed. Rather than cutting out buying food we should try to get restaurants and takeaways to use recyclable food containers or earth friendly containers

that's happen in the past, when everything shut down out here. people lost jobs. and no one wants to eat out anymore. most. we just went to an actual restaurant the other day its beeen months. So, yeah..it doesnt feel the same..and i totally get it with the job..use to have that career for a company. But, I do love the earth friendly containers idea! thats a great idea. But at the same time..going out to eat is a luxury not a need. BUT I could be wrong on that..but thats just my thoughts. Maybe If people talked about this more, and mention it to the companys more.they would actually do something you know?

I was so sad when I couldn't use my reusable bag at the store! Luckily I had a little bit of items so I just carried everything stacked and balanced to my car lol I hope stores start letting us use reusable bags again!!

One of the switches I made was getting reusable/washable makeup remover rounds. They came with a mess bag that you put the used ones in and then throw them in the washer

This is really cool. It has been impossible for us during the pandemic because all of the bulk has been removed from our grocery stores. Even the healthfood stores.

I want to reduce my waste! I recently made the switch to reusable grocery bags. So many foods at the store come in one time use packaging I am noticing! The next step is learning how to grow my own produce with my own compost.

Here in Australia we can recycle plastic coated cardboard (coffee cups, uht cartons), and take soft plastic to the grocery store to be recycled. The bags at the store cost a few cents, which doesn't seem to make people think twice. If they cost a dollar, they might think twice and end up bringing their own bags or using a box. Wish we had a Tare store here, though.

For the green onions, you can actually save the white bulbs and place it in a glass of water and the regrow within a matter of days! Usually lasts 3-4 months with onion flavor!

At my college we can do a take out option and it is supposed to have reusable takeout boxes, but for some reason for the past week they have been using styrofoam. Wish they would go back to the washable ones

1) West Coast people: WINCO also does bulk; some items are in plastic due to pandemic but most things are still in bulk and you can bring your clean jars to use. 2) So much of this is how people shopped prior to 1950s!

It will depend on location and whether they have the tare scale. Some do, some don't- but even those who don't will assist you with the weighing.

I think it’s good to look up what you can swap before you are done with what is plastic like a plastic deodorant to a cardboard one that I’m using I found at the store

People are so used to using plastic. But I keep seeing a lot more alternatives to plastics that we use everyday. I’m just starting to get into this lifestyle of a new normal and being more conscious on how we throw away trash! Please be mindful on the planet that we live in! Make this widespread @Goodful

I am so happy to see people trying zero waste. I think the pandemic stressed me out in regards Plastic. It takes longer to find alternatives but step by step we make it better 😊.

Yeah, umm, my 2020 new years resolution was to make changes in my life to go towards low waste/zero waste. No one informed me that we were going to have a pandemic, so just as I'm starting to get comfortable taking my jars to the bulk store, the bulk store stops allowing me to bring jars, and the store that sells all the lovely hygene/household cleaners shuts down their bulk section because plague. Bad year to start this. It wasn't entirely fruitless, we have made several changes, but it was not the progress I was hoping for. I just have to do what I can, and recognise that these are extraordinary times.

I'm vegan, I use reusable menstrual cups only, I cloth diaper and cloth wipe my daughters exclusively, reusable water bottles. But we could definitely start composting

a lot of those wastes can be replanted too. like those green onions he had in there and carrot tops, just put them in water and after a few days you'll have fresh leaves to cook with :)

I wish there were more grocery stores like Tare around the world. I live in NJ and there are tons of farmers markets, but almost no grocery stores where you can shop in bulk or avoid excess plastic. If anyone in NJ knows any stores where you could buy in bulk or anything like this, please share !!
