Quick correction: Maya wasn’t fired, her contract wasn’t renewed. Again, her contract with the company had ENDED and they decided not to rehire her because of her transphobia. So she threw a fit.

I was a little nervous seeing this pop up as A Honorary Trans Person (tm), cause you're straight up one of my favourite new channels I've come across and I was worried there was gonna be some terrible takes, but damn if this wasn't blown clear out of the water. Especially touching on why she may hold the beliefs she does, given Terfs don't tend to pop out of the ground fully formed. It was doubly cool to hear from your friend Gwen she seems cool as

This was a lovely video! I really enjoyed watching it, despite my "ugh...must we?" feelings about JKR. I knew I could count on this channel for top quality, even when I thought I'd never want to watch another video essay about this again. But I had faith, and said to myself "give it a chance, he's never let you down yet" and man, I love being correct. I had a great time and left with a smile on my face, which for a twitterf rowling video essay, hey! it's an august miracle! there's a lot to unpack about all this, as they say, but alas, it's late and jackie karen there makes me exhausted even at the best of times. so I may come back tomorrow to leave a more thorough comment, but here's a few things about the video i loved real quick: - You have great friends. which we knew, but hey, always good to reiterate. I'm going to steal that "I'm not done with my dad yet" joke first chance I get. - Maya!! Give her a kiss on the head for me, please - tell her it's from the internet, and that we love her. yes, I feel perfectly valid in speaking for the entire internet on that. - I loved everything about the section with Gwen. okay off the bat, it's fantastic to even have a trans person's voice in this whole conversation, for one, which seems way too obvious a thing for it to be so rare. let alone after like 50 bajillion nerds' hot takes about it, but hey, here we are. But regardless, Gwen was great, and I appreciated her perspective and thoughtfulness here. I envy her capacity for compassion, even for someone like JK - I can't say I feel the same, at least not for that person, but that sort of kindness from Gwen is a great quality for a person to have. especially when it's for people who would not give you the same respect or consideration, like JK and her ilk. ah man, I gotta move on before I get mad, good vibes only for this comment...anyway... - I'd really like to see more of Gwen in your videos! I loved the dry "hopefully next time we can talk about something else other than trans, or gender" at the end of that segment, and it made me laugh out loud, bc one, okay, mood. there's a reason my best friend, who's also trans (other direction as me tho) wrote on the whiteboard in our living room in mid-March "DAYS SINCE WE LAST TALKED ABOUT GENDER: 0" (and no, we have not had to change it since...) i mean, we do talk about other stuff! in fact, we MOSTLY talk about other stuff! we're whole, complex individuals, with personalities and interests and everything, completely outside of gender! but i mean...well...yeah. for various reasons, yeah, between ourselves or with cis people, yeah... but also, you know what, yeah, I would enjoy hearing Gwen's perspective on other stuff too! from what we see in this video, I think she'd have interesting thoughts to share, in an insightful and funny way, on all sorts of topics. I'll pin a tangent about trans creators for another day, though. in conclusion: I'm incapable of writing short comments, I now no longer have any idea what a terf is, JKR who, and in this house there is only one valid Maya, long live the queen. thank you for your time.

Thank you so much for the incredible feedback! I’m going to try my best to respond to all your points. You’re awesome! Firstly, I completely understand your reservations. I didn’t want this to just be another one of THOSE videos, and I wouldn’t have made it unless I knew I had a different angle. I’m glad it paid off! My friends mean the absolute world to me. They’re basically my family, and I don’t know where I’d be without them, no joke. Also, Jeremy came up with that on the fly, I just asked him to improvise a sunny response, and the reaction was 100% genuine! 😆 As soon as I read your comment about Maya, it was the first thing I did. She’s usually right by my side, and she’s literally my best pal! When I said it’s from the Internet, she just looked at me, confused. Maybe she doesn’t quite understand the concept of fame just yet. 😏 Gwen is really awesome and kind. She’s almost sagely in her thoughtfulness and her ability to empathize. I even knew her before she even began to transition, so it’s been a while! She’s always down for a conversation, and usually never jumps to conclusions about the important issues. It’s funny you say you and your friend have that whiteboard, because, when we lived in the OC, that’s ALL people wanted to talk to Gwen about since the transition! I won’t speak any more on her behalf, since she’s perfectly capable of doing that herself, but we tease Gwen for being trans like we tease Jeremy for being bald. We’re all friends, and we rip on each other, and if it goes too far, we say it in the moment, and never let it stew. Though, I don’t think we’ve gone “too far” in years, so that’s a good thing. We’ve been helping Gwen come up with some ideas for her channel, and she’s guest starred in many of my videos! The two that come to mind are the Pocahontas and Kelly Family vids. But she’s always welcome to return to talk about other things! In fact, there might be a Matt and Gwen team up in the near future... Again, thank you so much for the comment! It means a lot to all of us, and I do hope the one valid Maya is the pup that’s right next to me! 🤣

Great video! Was a little nervous going into watching this but I appreciated your takes a lot. I feel like JK manages to be both misandrist and misogynistic all in one. Her takes are extremely Straight White Cis Woman feeling and exclude virtually anyone else, or sometimes even people the same as her. For instance her obsession with that "people who menstruate" doesn't even have to be a trans argument, even if you removed that aspect entirely there are still hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of cis women who don't menstruate due to a whole slew of reasons. Plus her typical TERF sticking point of public bathrooms always seems to steer back to policing who can enter them, and oof it's such a tired take. I'm a cis woman myself, but thanks to physically looking (and sounding) quite androg and/or masculine, I am ALWAYS getting questioned in public bathrooms. I legit cannot enter a public bathroom most days without SOMEONE giving me a dirty look, making comment about the wrong bathroom or, in a few cases, being physically dragged out. I am a *cis woman* being told I can't piss in a womans bathroom thanks to people like JK policing what women should or shouldn't look like, which is ironically hugely anti-feminist imo because she's saying that unless you can pass her feminine test, you can't piss in her womanly spaces. All because I, a cis woman, do not cater to the normal visuals of a 'woman'. I can't imagine how much more frustrating it must be for trans people. (Although ironically several of my trans women friends pass far better than I, which is a bit of a running joke with us.)

Thanks for checking out the video! Almost immediately after I posted it, she quadrupled down on many of her points, which worried me. Like Gwen said, I can’t let her slide by willful ignorance any longer. It’s a shame that JK Rowling makes the world worse off for, not just trans people, not just you, or I, but just PEOPLE. Her views set civil right back quite a bit, and it is exhausting hearing a lot of feminists AGREEING with her, which, to me, seems kind of counterintuitive for the feminist movement.

with three years of hindsight and her not really changing at all (becoming increasingly associated with some incredibly dodgy people), I still hope maybe someday someone can sit down with her and she will understand the harm her statements are doing, but as is she is at a point down the TERF rabbit hole that it would take some serious brain rewiring to make her stance change. We can only hope that one day she finally realises the harm she's done

It's nice to hear the nuanced take on why she is so precious with this concept of womanhood. What sticks in my craw is she is one of the wealthiest artists alive today, one of the wealthiest people, with nothing but time and resources and passionate fans that can teach her why she is wrong. Hell, I went from being ignorantly transphobic to a vocal supporter of trans rights over a couple years watching youtube and befriending trans people! Regarding your stance on the whole educating thing, I technically agree, but we also live in an age where all information known to human kind (outside of personal scenarios) is available after a few button taps. Expecting trans people to do the emotional labor of explaining things that could easily be done by a computer is just... Eh. Not the spiciest of takes. And now that she's inserted herself into the legislation world, I'd argue we have a right to be pretty damn pissed off, and to direct it at the person who could potentially harm us. Still a good video despite how worried I was going in though.
@gwenofair628
@gwenofair628 3 жыл бұрын
While I do agree with you on the availability of information, it is important to remember that not everybody has the same learning style. It’s important to provide as much accurate information as possible, in as many ways possible for there to be understanding. I also agree that it’s not up to every trans person to have to explain all of this information. The unfortunate truth is we still live in a time where there are people who ( despite there being a large amount of information to the contrary) believe that being gay is a choice, certain races are better than others, and the reason only trans women transition is to sneak into women’s bathroom. Despite the incredible strides that the LGBT community has made moving forward there’s still a lot that needs to be done in order for people to truly understand. The upside to everything is that it seems like there’s been a turning point, and we’re finally heading in that direction. As far as being mad, I think you have every right to be angry. In fact I think you should be angry. What’s important is what you do with that anger. Simply lashing out will not get anything done. Only through levelheaded discussion can anything truly get done. Think of it like this: You have been told about (A) Your entire life you’ve been told that(A) is a specific way and this information has been ingrained in to you. New information has come out that (A) is actually (B) This information now contradicts everything you have ever learned about (A) Everyone is mad at you because you didn’t know that (A) is actually (B) Now you have two choices you can 1. Double down because it’s what you have “known” your entire life and be mad because anyone who speaks to you about the contrary just yells at you and calls you stupid. 2. Try and do research but get bogged down by the numerous technical terms required to understand what’s being said, getting confused, and frustrated because when you do ask about it people are mad at you because you don’t understand and feel stupid. Then go to 1. Really what I’m trying to get at is, the only way to beat ignorance like this is with compassion not lashing out in anger.
@mattammarofficial
@mattammarofficial 3 жыл бұрын
I do think being angry is a perfectly acceptable reaction to her remarks. I still do think that it's important to have all the information to provide a compelling argument, and that goes for both sides, especially hers. I'm not at all saying any of this puts her in the right, nor am I saying she deserves forgiveness.

Yo, this video is amazing! I 100% agree with your points and arguments. As for my experience with Harry Potter, I loved the books and the films when I was younger. But after I read about J.K.'s dumbass retcons and later her... transphobia... let's just say I'm exclusively a fan of the movies nowadays. Changes from the books be damned. They're adaptations after all; changes can be made, I get that. For example, I honestly think the way Deathly Hallows Part II concludes the franchise is masterful, and I consider it to be one of the best conclusions to a series of films I've ever seen. And Prisoner of Azkaban is exquisitely directed by Alfonso Cuarón (even if I consider it his weakest film) and gorgeously shot and acted. The rest of the main movies all have their moments, especially the score and the overall charm and the action and creativity later on. I even liked the first Fantastic Beasts movie to an extent, even if the second one was kind of awful. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, I'm giving credit to the other artists, not Joanne.

Thank you so much! Is so depressing, because Harry Potter was such a huge part of people's childhood. And seeing JK's nonsense is like having a part of your childhood ripped away from you. PS: I haven't seen enough of Alfonso Cuarón's filmography to make a judgement, but you're probably right. 😆

I am of two minds when it comes to Terfs. Part of me wants to sympathize with anyone who has to endure radical feminism because I know how bad things can get there and no one deserves to be persecuted for how they are by a group that calls you disgusting for existing. On the other hand, remember when radfems were mainly concerned with attacking “Straight, cis men” and most of the Trans community, at best, ignored it entirely(If not actually agreeing with some of their values)? Yeahhhhh.

@@gwenofair628 this is where I channel David Tennant era doctor Who and say I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I wish it were that simple with someone as entrenched as JK. I too wanted to give benefit of the doubt, but her rhetoric has only ratcheted up as people have invited her to respectful dialogue. Even the amazing Kate Bornstein tried to get through. If you're looking for a new British fantasy series that's relaxed and groovy about gender, I recommend Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Rowling's views on gender make a heck of a lot more sense than the incoherent, inconsistent, illogical gender ideology one is expected to believe in to be politically correct these days. Good for her for sticking to her views against the shaming people like you are trying to do to her; her bravery is worthy of a Gryffindor.

I’m sorry that you feel that information about gender is incoherent and inconsistent. As a trans person myself I’d be more than willing to start an open dialogue where we can talk about the misunderstanding and hopefully I can provide a more accurate and consistent understanding of the difference between one’s gender and one’s biological sex.
@dantobias4520

@@gwenofair628 In the Twitter discourse on the subject, I constantly see claims from the trans lobby that biological sex doesn't even exist, so it seems impossible to pin down any consistent position on that. The video presents a false alternative between JKR being either a bigot or just ignorant, totally banishing even contemplating the possibility that maybe she's right and her critics are wrong. Such absolute certainty of one's beliefs is something I might have previously said should apply only to such things as "2+2=4", but lately I see Twitter discourse on THAT subject where people are saying with all seriousness that math is a social construct and there are alternate ways of knowing under which 2+2 might be 5 or something else, so you're a bigot if you insist on 2+2=4 and not consider any alternatives. So if even basic math is up for debate, why is gender ideology sacrosanct?

Dan Tobias Ah there’s your problem! You’re getting your information from Twitter which is not exactly the most credible source in the world. In fact it’s mostly just a place for people to yell their opinions into a avoid that anyone can observe into. If you need real technical data there are plenty of accredited scientist dedicated to researching and understanding the very concept of gender identity. I’m not sure where this whole notion of biological sex not being a thing came from but it’s nonsense. I was born biologically male and no amount of surgery can change my genetics however my biological sex does not dictate my gender identity. As much as you see yourself as a man I see myself as a woman. The way my brain is hardwired would be considered neurotypically female and I’ve gone to several therapists and psychologist who could confirm this. The best way to think about it is I can’t change the way my brain is structured any more than a person with autism can. I would agree that not every person who claims that they’re trans are actually trans but, some people are just trying to figure themselves out and others are just looking for attention. You can’t judge an entire group of people because a handful of them are loud obnoxious assholes even if they’re the ones up in the front. I think it would be best to take a moment to step away from the loud obnoxious twitter mobs to actually look at the cold hard facts actual professionals have been researching with as little pre-determined biased as possible.
@gwenofair628
@gwenofair628 4 жыл бұрын
Dan Tobias The reason why I feel J. K. Rowling is incorrect is not because of her personal experience but because the “facts” that she’s stating are genuinely being misinterpreted. That is her core problem and seemingly a problem for people who have a tendency to speak without actually doing any research because they’re too overwhelmed and consumed by their emotions. I’m not saying that someone’s emotions can be wrong but I am saying that if you’re going to make a statement that it should be backed up with actual facts from people who are researched experts in that particular field.
@dantobias4520
@dantobias4520 4 жыл бұрын
@@gwenofair628 It seems there might not actually be all that much distance between your own views and JKR's; the big differences are between the "people yelling opinions into a void", some of them nonsense (on both sides of the culture wars), with more nuanced views being "rounded off" by partisans to one or the other and people being pressured into getting in line with their "side" or "tribe". But it seems both you and JKR agree that biological sex exists, and is not the same as gender identity, and there are a few concrete issues on which this difference matters. Maybe you still disagree on exactly which issues those are, but that's not a matter of either person being "bad", just that they disagree.
