Today we've got an overview of two stump grinders: The Baumalight 1P24 and the S14 grinders. Both are on relatively small machines, our John Deere 1025R tractor and the Baumalight TRL620D Mini Skid Steer. We'll go over the features of each and also put them to use with two first time operators. In the end, are either of these the right stump grinder for you? Or should you size up? Or hire the job done? We won't be able to answer for you, but you'll be more informed after watching this video.

Awesome video. After just doing 60 stumps for a customer with a stump grinder, I have some advice regarding cleaning the shavings out of the way to see the stump better. If you have a helper, have them use a hard rake and a leaf rake to et the heavy debris out of the way. I would use a leaf blower once in a while to get the fine shavings off of the stump so that I could see what needs to be grinded still. Helper can then haul away debris while you keep grinding - or debris can be left to fill hole after grinding is done. That's what worked best for me to keep it moving as smoothly as possible.

I got a 1P24 less than a year ago for my 1023E and it's been a great attachment. It's been the most expensive attachment for sure, but will likely be the first attachment to pay for itself. I've grounded probably 75-100 stumps without any issues at others as well as my own home. It does a great job. The PTO shaft is very heavy duty and comes with a slip clutch. In regards to it being unstable and jumping around, if you start from one side and work over and across the stump, it's much smoother. One part of your video shows one of the guys starting in the middle of the stump, that will be a bumpy ride for sure. I had my own tractor/stump grinder tuition learning curse too:-)

I’ll be spending some quality time with my 1P24 on my 1025R today. There certainly is a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it really is a great piece of equipment.

tractor time with tim says that with that stump grinder on the series 1 tractor you should only take a inch at a time then you dont get that rough bounce alot

Good information. I am considering a grinder like this, no need for more hydraulic lines to the rear $. I like this style also I have surface roots from my pine trees.

I just got the 1P24 for my John Deere 1023E and Love it, I have started making money with it. I did a 48 Inch Pine Stump in about 30 minutes. So far I have done about 40 stumps and no issues with it at all. It does take practice and feel to get good with it. But, when you do your speed will increase.

I have a 1023 as well, I haven't used a stump grinder yet. But did it appear to you the tractor operator, might have been hitting the stump at a bad angle?

They're definitely is a learning curve to these. Tractor time with Tim he makes it look very easy, but he's done a lot with his Baumalight. I did notice that it looked like you were using a snow shovel to go away the shavings to see how much more stump. I thought that was a great idea and it worked really well! I was curious what is your flow on your little mini skid steer?

Looking back issue i saw someone that used a wireless backup camera (?$80?) and mount it to where you can see the blade and not have to turning your neck all the time.

I never really understood stump grinders until I use one I guess, I have pulled up dozens of stumps with my backhoe attachment, I think it takes alot longer. But I also use the backhoe for lots of other tasks. I ha e pulled out 5 foot diameter stumps with my boomer 24, which isn't much bigger then the 1024R. You have to tear up alittle more ground, but you're already having to backfill and level and plant anyways.

I find with my 3pt Hitch stumper, the jerking is better if you start on the left side of the stump (from the drivers position) as opposed to the right or center. I also take smaller bites. Most people are finding an RV style Backup camera is helpful. Finally, people think in terms of raising or lowering the unit. Sometimes, I find tilting it back slightly is helpful with the jerking as well as providing a deeper cur, but you loose some of the effect of the side cutting teeth.

For around the farm I use a large backhoe. I can dig up stumps and bury them in the hole.

Right to left. Physics and blade engagement are similar to a skill saw / circular saw. If the heel of the blade engages the wood first, a violent reaction would be expected.

I have a woodland mills stump grinder for my 1025r I’ve paid for it doing stumps on the side in a very short amount of time so I’d say it’s worth it

Ergonomically, the skid steer version appears superior to the tractor one. My neck would be hurting not to mention the constant shaking if I had to use the John Deere 1025R version. Good review as always, Courtney.

Just for ghits & shiggles, how about mounting a "back-up camera system" with a small camera & screen so you can face forward while operating this grinder on a tractor? The only problem I foresee is that everything will be reversed when looking at the screen, left will be right & vice versa. Or maybe not? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂

The stumps almost look like soft wood. I did a giant 40" pine stump with a grinder. It took almost 4 hours lol.

I will tell you if you lengthen that top length and put more of a inward angle on that cutter wheel on that 1p24 it made mine cut a lot smoother at least it did on mine the stabilizer bars need to be tight as possible I work left to right Grinding if you work right to left I do notice more vibration as well love mine though thanks for the video

You should also start on the right side and work to the left and it won’t bounce so much

As you look at your setup from behind you want to start on the upper right side.... The 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock quadrant of the rotor is the sweet spot 😊😊😊

A wireless video camera on a tripod would save your neck. Put a small screen on the tractor dash and face forward.

I’m concerned that it’s not a diesel and the PTO HP is unknown. The 1025r has about 18hp, so I would imagine the x739 is only 16. Not sure if there’s enough balls to spin the wheel on a stump. I guess if it can run a tiller, it should be fine.

@@jonah327 Those machines are at least 18hp because the K91 in my 445 was as well and it only had 22hp, as does my 1023E, 22.4 hp and remarkedly under rated at 15 hp PTO and the 1023E runs it fine. Now I do think both the 1023 and the 1025 have underrated hp's but that's just a theory.

I'm looking to purchase a small stump grinder..$3,000 would be my high end..however I'm scared of buying junk..who knows what'd good..I'm looking to grind stumps, that are 12" across the top of stump.

The 1P24 being made in Canada and the WG24 being made in China means it was an easy decision for us... Things made in China are cheaper for many reasons...

Hi Robert, I've heard good things about Woodland Mills, but haven't used their products. I believe one of the biggest factors in the price difference is that they are Made in China.

@@jburch1544 Isn’t the woodland mills made in Canada or just assembled there? I just bought one for a lot less than a baumalight and it’s very heavy duty built. The shipped weight was over 500 lbs so without the angle iron frame it’s probably a solid 400 lbs operating weight.

Ordered a WM with spare teeth delivered for a $1,000 less than the Baumalight. They look like very similar units, I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
