Im Irish and a year ago these crimes were all over the news. The irish have mastered the art of stealing atm machines. There was even a website where you could place bets on where the next machine would be stolen

I used to work in my local convenience store for metal, and it was next to a tobacco distribution place. Came in one morning, and someone had broken into our unit. They broke into our weaker security system, drove our forklift into the wall to the tobacco, lifted the wall away with the forks, and made off with a bunch of smokes. It was the smartest forklift bamboozle I've ever seen.

My sister's brilliant boyfriend got busted for doing just this twenty years ago. He was actually successful somehow twice, although he claims getting into the ATM after the fact is a bitch. On the third go, he used chains attached to his truck and it tore apart his truck frame and destroyed his only getaway. Big brain criminal.

This has happened in my town. After inside edition (and other news channels) aired a track pulling the ATM out of the wall, that became a string of crimes in my town for the next few weeks. At the store I worked at, the grocery store on one side and the gas station on the other both had trucks drive through the doors then pull the ATMs out. And before anyone asks, no, nobody was ever caught or charged.

There was a girl I knew from my neighborhood who tried to steal an ATM with her boyfriend by literally just picking it up and trying to carry it out of the store in broad daylight. Needless to say, they didn't make it very far. That same girl got in trouble again a few years later because she stole someone's car and parked it out in front of her own house lol.

Fun Fact: Most of these forklifts use about 3 different keys between almost all models. A lot of construction workers have multiple copies of these just in case. Technically any of these forklifts left in a parking lot for renovations can be driven and used for any kind of theft.

Not all even have keys, some just have switches and if you're lucky (to be able to stop idiots) they have a start button as well that you have to press the same time under the dash, often times the keys aren't even keys just a piece of metal that fits in the slot, Anyways from working multiple jobs I've got keys for hyster,Yale,Raymond,Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, crown,cat probably others I don't know, and it's like 4 keys.....

@@tree2800Just like how roller shutter lock works Over time, the keyhole will somehow get "loose" from wear and tear, all you need is a piece of metal strong enough to turn it, and the lock is open If you see an old shop row with roller shutter, chances are the lock are so run down, you can even open it with your standard master lock key

When I was a teller at a local bank, someone actually pulled this off and got away with it. They ripped the entire ATM out of the cement and took off with it. Police later found the empty ATM in a pond, but they never caught the perps. Crazy.

We had a telehandler a lot like this stolen for a few hours in Nashville a few months ago and it was found on the other side of the town. It made us giggle to think about someone driving that down the road as if nothing is wrong

There was a shop near me with an ATM, a couple minutes walk from some fields. A couple times a year people would try to and sometimes successfully steal it using also stolen: forklifts, diggers, skidsteers, tractors, farm equipment, van, sledgehammer. They tried barriers infront of the ATM but people would ram into the other side of the shop and try to drive through it, to get to the ATM from inside. This failed a few times, leaving tractors etc stuck inside the shop and then finally the shop stopped having an ATM.

I went to work one day (years ago) at an outdoor outlet mall. There were cops everywhere.. the outdoor ATM near my store was all busted up, had been moved several feet to the right, had chains around it, and muddy ATV tracks leading all the way back to the woods behind the mall.

The irony of using an industrial forklift to rob an atm is like using a diamond to break glass to steal a game console. Industrial forklifts go for anywhere between $30k to $50k. The average ATM has single to double digit interactions a day, most of which are very minimal amounts. They're basically using a 5 figure vehicle to steal like $5,000 at most.

And even then ATM machines probably have other security measures like GPS trackers and ink cartriges to ruin the money inside to prevent thefts. The problem with the Forklifts is that you would need to have someone to sell it, which i imagine most of these thieves likely don't have the contacts.

There's a story from Nanaimo, where someone used an excavator for a large safe....Back in the 70's if I recall correctly, they got away with it but made a huge mess of the building... right through the wall!!! This does happen, and more often than one can fathom!!

If there is anything that I learned when I was originally going to school to be a police officer, it's that there is no such thing as a smart criminal. My personal favorite from years ago was a man who broke into someone's house, it went wrong, killed the guy, the walked home...in the snow....footprints all the way from his house, to the crime scene, and back.

Just want to point out that both Cat and Komatsu keys are universal, respectively, so if you have one key, you can use all of the equipment under that brand. Just be sure to bring bolt cutters in case they put a padlock on the door to keep you from your fun times.

The guys from the Derry Northern Ireland video done this all over the country and never got caught. They'd chose ATMs close to construction sites and because construction sites leaves keys in their equipment most of the time, its a free tool for the job. Fun fact about the Derry one, that shop pretty much built a bunker for the ATM in the car park, theres a video of someone getting crushed by a car a few months after that robbery at the new ATM.

Something similar happened in my town, they used a construction vehicle and a pickup to remove the ATM, the owner came out and chased them off and one of the galaxy brained individuals managed to bring the entire canopy down over the petrol station.

The same thing happened in Oklahoma City earlier this year, the culprits used a forklift to pry the ATM out of its spot, then took it to private property I believe, and used an excavator to open it and get the cash. You can't even have an ATM in Oklahoma 💀
