Google Pixel 3a / 3a XL: Black Screen of Death, Boot Loop, Frozen, Unresponsive (FIXED!)

If your Google Pixel 3a or 3a XL has the black screen of death, screen won't turn on, can't restart, frozen, unresponsive, etc then make sure you try all of these methods. This will work for most of you but others may need a screen replacement or you may have an issue with your motherboard.

Worked on this thing for an hour (pixel 2) using all of these methods from 11:30pm-1:00am, finally put it in the freezer for half an hour, plugged it into another charger cable, pressed and held power button and it came on. Has been working fine since. I will never let it completely die again 😱, that was what set this chain of events off in the first place. So a big THANK YOU!!!

Cleaning the top front sensor (that I didn't even know was there) worked. Saving this video just in case. Thank you very much. I was 20 minutes away from getting mad. Thank goodness I still had my old phone to see this video.

Fixed!!! I repeated the steps from jiggling power button, pressing with a paper towel to the patting on the palm of my hand twice and it worked. Brilliant. Thank you! (I did have to remove my screen protector)

Thanks so much for your helpful video. My screen was black and then has this funny speckly screen when I tried to force the restart. Squeezing the phone all over brought it back to life. Great to have it fixed, but slightly concerning it has done this when it is one week old!

Pressing the power button repeatedly called emergency services automatically which was not fun, do not recommend that step if your phone is on but your screen is just black and you can't see.

Thank you for making this video. I have a brand new 3a less than two weeks old, and this happened to mine today. Squeezing the screen like you showed fixed it for whatever reason. My concern now is whether I should try to exchange it; I mean having a scare like this on a brand new phone isn't cool. But id just be swapping for another 3a and if they try to test it they wont find anything wrong since squeezing the screen allowed it to boot up again. After it restarted, I also had to remove and reinstall my sim card to get it to connect to my carrier.

Ooh, this reminds me of when we used to whack our T.V. Sets back in the 60's if the picture went wonky. My advice would be, if you have to resort to whacking a (near brand new) phone, then it might be an idea to take/send it back and get a replacement? 😉

Some part of this video fixed my son's Pixel 3a. I had already forced it to reboot a couple times. I'd already cleaned the screen, but by recommendation of this video, I removed the screen saver/case and tried repeatedly pressing power/volume buttons a few times, as well as pressing hard on the whole phone. Then forcing another reboot the screen came on. So, I'm not sure which step fixed it, but it did. ONE IMPORTANT NOTE : I dialed 911 while quickly pressing the power button! And, this was before the screen was working, so I got to talk to the local 911 operator. I explained my issue, by accidently triggering 911 and luckily it was no big deal. But it's certainly worth noting, this could happen by pressing the power button repeatedly on a Pixel

With my Pixel 3a, the screen looked fine, but the touchscreen didn't work. Tried everything and it wasn't until I pulled the screen off, that I could see the issue. The ribbon cable that connects to the main board is held on by a little metal clamp. Inside that clamp, sits a tiny bit of foam that I could imagine does nothing to really hold the cable onto the board. Anyways, I took that off, reseated the cable and turned on the phone. Amazingly it decided to work! Unfortunately I cracked my screen in the process so, If you do the same I would go very slow with removing it. If I can get another screen, I'm gonna add a little more foam (or something) so that it keeps the cable connector from lifting up. Hope this helps.

Thank you! Just followed the iFixit tutorial for a screen replacement and it was black. Re-did the connection and held the power button down and it worked!

Hello, I just bought a brand new Google Pixel smartphone (Google Pixel 1) and I have a problem with the flashlight. When I turn it on it works, but just at first try. After first try the light doesn´t turn on. When I restart it, it again works but just at first try. So it´s a software. If this is a hardware problem, why does flashlight work on every first attempt? Hardware problem would be if the flashlight didn't work at all or not? It is running on android 10 so I tried downgrade it to android 9, 8 and 7. None of these androids solved the problem. Do you know how to solve this problem? :(

I knew I had to hold the power button a while, but didn't know it was that long. Rebooted my phone just fine. Thank you very much for the help. Thought it was bricked for sure.

Thanks for this, didn't consider that the connections could be off by just a bit. Squeezing the phone solved my issue. Word of caution, apparently there's now a function which dials emergency services when you slam the power button over and over. Use caution lol.

I really hope you still active and can maybe see if my problem is fixable The screen is completely off but the touches and vibration works fine, even after restarting nothing show up I was wondering if it's either the light or lose connection between the screen and the motherboard because my phone was working perfectly fine, didn't drop it at all I'm receiving notifications, I can ask google to open certain apps for me Is the problem what I think it can be or maybe advanced one like motherboard Will reset can actually help in my situation?

Hi, I have pixel 4a 5g model, and it suddenly became dead, it had only 2percent charging left. I checked the hardware, there is no issue with circuit, but it has gone into EDL mode. We have removed and inserted the battery back, but still it is showing no sensation. What and how to do, can you please help. All my data and work is stuck. I can't do anything. Please help.

pressing firmly all over the phone worked but then after restarting it was back to black screen. repeated process and it rebooted. its working now but im not confident in its ability to maintain.

i tried rebooting it for 1 minute but didnt see the google logo. the phone vibrates whenever i try to use finger print and squeeze it for google assistant but other than that, nothing seems to be happening. my phone was at 52% when it turned off.

My phone would not accept ANY keyboard touches. I couldn't enter my Passcode to "login" to the phone. I removed case protector, cleaned sensors and screen, applied pressure all over phone, did several presses to power and volume buttons. I then held power button until forced restart. I'm wandering if one of the buttons was stuck and the above fixed it. Vodoo but it worked. Thanks!

I've broke my screen two months ago and when I received the spare one, it won't turn on. Phone vibrates when I am touching the fingerprint sensor and connect the charger, but won't lit! So am I stucked with a freezed phone or a defective screen?

I had a grey screen made of thousands of different colored dots. Couldn't get it to boot at all. I did the long press on power button, then pushing down on front and back and finally smacking it on my palm. DAMN!!! It's working again! THANKS, WORLDOFTECHMAN!!!

You would think Google would have such a simple troubleshoot on their Pixel Help and Support page, but of course not. They'd rather take your perfectly good working phone and ship you a refurbished replacement with a shady history. Tried Doing everything. My pixel 3 is still stuck on the Google boot screen. Their customer service rep told me that now their higher level team will reach out to me within 3 days. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT

Thanks got mine back on but used the hard restart and start option instead of factory reset. Should be mentioned in the video so people don't erase all their info if they don't have to.

Welp, I think my screen is just broken. I just accidentally somehow called 911 doing one of these steps so that was an awkward surprise hearing a responder ask me if I was ok while looking at a black screen.
