With tech-tober in full swing, our next set of teardown devices are brought to us by Google. On our table you’ll see the Pixel 8 Pro and the Pixel 8 and we’re looking at the Pixel 8 Pro specifically today. The pixel 8 pro does have a new feature that’s a first for mainstream smartphones, a thermometer on the back. Due to FDA regulations, it’s not approved to measure body temperature, but it’s a pretty nifty little feature nonetheless. Combine that with a host of integrated AI tools and you’ve got a truly interesting Android device powered by Google’s own Tensor G3 System on Chip.
But the questions we want to answer today is, just how easy is it to repair a Pixel 8 Pro, and can you do it yourself?

Making OEM parts available gives so much more value to the 7 year software updates. You can actually use this phone for 7 years by replacing damaged components and old batteries.

@@BehindstageI have a friend who's more than happy with his Pixel 2 XL. It's snappy, takes good pictures, and still has a good QHD display. He would still use it without second thought if it was supported. And guess what, that phone is already 6 years old. With what hardware recent flagships come, they won't ever get unusable with any app or software feature awaiting us in the next 7 years. If the 2017 Pixel 2 still keeps up, the Pixel 8 is safe for the next 10 years surely.

@@BehindstageIt's people like you who are so out of touch from the real world that make these discussions funny. There are many people who keep devices for years, especially those who already tend to struggle a bit financially. There are also many people who WOULD keep their phones longer, but with so many companies ending support for devices in under 3 years and not really offering OEM parts, it gets hard to actually repair old devices. Your phone doesn't stay in perfect condition as it ages. Not to mention, it's also funny that you think that they won't actually give 7 years of OS updates. They've continued to meet their software support promises for every Pixel, as well as getting close to reaching software support for their Chromebooks. Remember their Pixelbooks? They promised 10 years of software updates. They've already reached about 6-7 years. It's not impossible for them to support a phone for 7 years as well.

It's really heartwarming to see big companies take actual steps towards a more user-friendly approach to maintenance, especially tech giants like google, samsung and valve. And credit to you for partnering up with them to make parts easily available for the consumer. The future might not be as dark as I thought for a consumer-centric move of the industry. Stay awesome!

You guys missed to mention the fact that the USB-C port is (again) soldered to the motherboard, replacing it therefore is a massive hurdle for a normal end-user (plus you have to disassemble most of the phone to get there) and will most likely require the entire motherboard to be swapped out (extremely expensive). Only a tiny fraction of tech experts will attempt to solder a new USB-C port to repair an old Pixel.
