Google's Project Ara: Reinventing the smartphone with building blocks

Project Ara, a smartphone you can customize, may seem like a crazy idea, but it's not half as crazy as what it takes to build it. Google's ATAP group, led by Paul Eremenko, takes the DARPA philosophy and applies it to building phones. Eremenko wants five billion customers, but before he gets there, he has to convince developers to create the hardware.

The downsides would have been huge. Like take your phone out of your pocket in a hurry and one of the side modules slide and fall off on the floor, street, bus, cab, etc. You talk on the phone and a thief/snatcher subtly steals just one or two modules from behind without you noticing. And to think of the dust accumulation and scratches as result this would have under the modules.

If this phone took off, market would have become way different. The components/specific functionality modules would have cost way more than the base model of phone with basic function. So those is what kisses me off, they are ripping off a phone called Phonebloks, and guess what the had working prototypes and guess what the had groups like Verizon atnt and Samsung's and many other complains as third parties to creat there own bloks, and the only reason it didn't get in to development was because they where I think 50,000 of the asked donations. Oh and another thing, it would have many price ranges for the bloks them selves. So yeah screw this project.
@rydude998
@rydude998 9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Bewley You're mistaken, Phonebloks was the concept that inspired this. Phonebloks never had working prototypes nor did they ever plan on making them. The creator of Phonebloks wanted companies to join together and build a phone that could use modules from different retailers. The 50,000 number you're thinking of was the requirement for a "shout". A shout was a worldwide acknowledgement of the concept on every form of social media. This project is a HUGE step to the future Phonebloks envisioned. Please educate yourself.

And look at what that did for PC hardware! Imagine how far behind we'd be now if you could only buy a PC as a unit item. They'd be more expensive because the volumes of components sold would be much lower. Software (games) couldn't push the latest hardware all the time because people would only buy a whole new PC every 3-4 years and the devs wouldn't want to slash their potential market by coding something only a small percentage could run. I'd be well happy to have a chubbier phone for those capabilities. - Today my phone is going to be a 2x4 phone with loads of battery modules. - Today my phone is going to be a monster 6x4 media device. - Today my phone is going to be a photographers dream (light meter module?)

Trouble is all the parts would need to be compatible with the platform. You'll start getting different generations of parts that aren't compatible with each other, or newer versions of android that don't support old components, etc. I doubt they could come up with much of a solution for that issue other than having a hardware approval process and that'd probably be the most bloated part of the entire venture :/

sinephase all the parts would be compatable. Android is currently in that boat.I'd say its likely that the main OS would exist on the same module as the cpu, removing issues with version compatability, and other modules that can handle memory storage would simply store the data in a way that was generic such as xml or json or some other universal format. Not just he drive filesystem, but the contacts for instance, so that data thats normaly stuck to the phone is available as the os improves, which sould of course still be available as soft upgrades tot he cpu module. I think the concept is brilliant.
@sinephase
@sinephase 10 жыл бұрын
Dave Vaughan It'll be interesting to see what they do to solve those kinds of issues, and you aren't really addressing newer versions of android not supporting old modules. It's inevitable unless Google can control it somehow (if they even plan to) and it's really no different than say, installing a newer android build for your phone and your wifi or camera stops working because there are no drivers for it.

A possibility of covering the entire back would be really nice specially for people who won't be choosing to fill in all the gaps. Or maybe 'separate' useless shells can be made or 'dummy' shells to fill in those useless gaps without adding to the weight. Beautiful technology! I wish this project all the success it can get.

This could never work. Mobile phone industry is based on consumers buying a whole, expensive phone and replacing it after a year or two. If phones would be modularized, companies would go bankrupt because selling these modules would just not make enough money.

Ur roommate could just take the whole phone, really there is no difference. If I leave my phone lying around, someone could steal it (a normal, non Ara phone for now). So if I leave a project Ara phone, maybe the thief would "borrow" (steal) a useful component. Or actually maybe the whole phone coz that way the thief leaves no trace behind. And u would most likely put a case on to stop the "problem" of components slipping if the 30N semi permanent, passive electromagnet isn't enough. Or just for the look, you would put a case. But then the phone gets thicker than it already is!! First world problems!!!!

I could see this being a way for companies to save money too. Rather than try to come up with phones to meet each particular market or niche, they could just offer up pre-packaged kits to hit each broad section of their market and offer up parts for users to upgrade with as they wish.

iamterence77 I doubt so since it will be a free for all buffet for consumers to choose and buy since the prices of each modules may be reduce drastically within a competitive free market.
@skifree0
@skifree0 10 жыл бұрын
Max Ong its a free for all for consumers, but its a suicide path for the suppliers. with so much choice, prices are kept low from the start which implies low profits. if you have low profits and high developments costs (it is a new platform), then the suppliers may not even be interested in the first place. Why sell your product as modules where consumers have tons of choice, when you can sell truckloads to your regular buyers (lg, samsung, apple, sony) which are a much more stable source of revenue, with much larger profit margins.
