Time for a port town twinned with Złotów in Poland. The settlement was not recorded in the Domesday Book, rather its first mention in any literature came in 1362, when it was referred to as “Gulle”. A lot of its history can be attributed to that man Cornelius Vermuyden and for good reason. As we’ve learned in previous episodes, he diverted the River Don northwards to the River Ouse in 1626.
His work would result in the Dutch River, the channel which I stood on in the Rawcliffe episode in Rawcliffe Bridge. It makes its way in a dead straight line from there into the River Ouse. It, together with the Aire and Calder navigation which would come later, were navigable for barges so that coal from the South Yorkshire Coalfield could be transported to seagoing vessels.
The original settlement was that part of the town now known as “Old Goole”, and it’s got its own separate section in this video. Now it is a town with about 20,000 inhabitants. It has seen rapid growth in just 200 years. Whilst the docks and the shipment of goods from here is and will always be important, it has much more than that these days.
An industrial estate has a glassworks and a huge Tesco distribution centre. The arrival of these employers resulted in the creation of hundreds of new jobs. If there are any Londoners out there, you might well have travelled on a Piccadilly line tube train recently. Those trains are manufactured on that industrial estate as well!
Demographically, this is a town that’s still growing. Welcome to GOOLE.

In the 90s (propobably around 97/98) when I was at Vermuyden School (now Goole Academy), one day the Royal Helicopter landed on the school field and HRH Prince Charles got out into the awaiting car on the school drive. If i recall, this visit to Goole included a stop at the Waterways Museum.

In 1959 I was posted to Goole as a young West Riding Constabulary Constable. I loved working the beat in Goole Town and also covered Hook and Airmyn. I got married at Goole Parish Church and lived in Henry street. I also covered Old Goole and Swinefleet and the other villages which in the 50s/60s was covered by the local Bobby Freddy Nix when he was days off. On the Industrial estate in those days was a glass fibre factory and a Carlsberg bottling plant for the huge containers of lager brought to Goole Docks by ship. There was a Burtons Factory on a sharp corner of the A614 where in 1960 The Beatles travelling from Hull where they had just arrived from Hamburg and travelling to Liverpool had an accident. The car was being driven by George Harrison who eventually appeared at Goole Magistrates Court for Driving without Due care and attention.

This takes me back... as a family we lived there in 1990-91 (ish). We lived on a boat in the Marina (known as a timber pond back then). I used to go to Vermuyden school with my sister. We left after a year or so because my parents hadn't paid rent for our mooring. We just 'cast off' and motored up to North Shields for the next few years. Ah, the memories.

After passing my driving test in the mid-1970s, Goole became a regular destination in my line of work and I quickly developed a soft spot for the town. I often had an unhealthy amount of time on my hands and used it to explore the town on foot, particularly the docks and waterways. On one occasion I decided to drive the long way home, across Goole Fields and along the King's Causeway to Crowle and the A18 near Scunthorpe. The lonely, flat landscape and the multitude of drains and fens sparked a lifelong interest in the hydrology of the Humberhead Levels and of the work of Vermuyden. Watching your visits to many of the parishes in the Goole & Thorne area has rekindled many happy memories of this time. Thank you.

The Waterways Museum (Which became known as the Yorkshire Waterways Museum) was run by the Sobriety Project a charity The Sobriety Project was named after the vessel Sobriety, which was donated to the local high school and the then history teacher Robert Watson (Who was given an MBE for his charitable works) was set in charge of running it. Donations of memorabilia was received and eventually the Museum was born. The people benefitting from the vessel and then the Museum expended from School children to the rest of the community (Including disadvantaged people, disabled people and prisoners working toward release from prison.) It became an accredited educational setting offering a variety of courses to those who wished to take part, from catering, to woodwork and of course boat handling. The museum also offered a residential cruise on Yorkshires Waterways onboard Sobriety, and hosted music festivals, Sea shanty festivals and Motorbike rallies as well as being the setting for many wedding receptions. Due to a lack of funding the Project and the Museum was closed in 2019. The Anchor was placed by Castaway Music Theatre which is an arts charity for young people and adults with learning and physical disabilities, autism conditions and mental health difficulties. They still perform to this day. you can see more information about castaway at www.castaway-goole.co.uk/

As a Dutch person, I must give you kudos for your pronunciation of Vermuyden. It's not exactly right, but it's about as close as I imagine an average English speaker could get. Your pronunciation for Harlingen wasn't too bad either but it was definitely very British, haha!

Złotów I believe has a pronunciation like "shlotoff" but considering how difficult Polski orthography is that was a pretty good attempt! It virtually rhymes with Wrocław which I think is pronounced like "vroklaff" (the Silesian city that used to be called Breslau where Pope John Paul II was from).
@TheVillageIdiot
@TheVillageIdiot 2 жыл бұрын
Well i've been to Krakow, and its funny, some seem to say that as "Krakoff", some as "Krak-cow" and I've even heard it said as "Krak-cove"...so along them lines, Zlotow could be all three haha
@emilduncanbrown8571
@emilduncanbrown8571 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheVillageIdiot Krakow isn't the same place as Wrocław btw. John Paul II was the local archbishop there but he was from Wrocław. As I said Polski orthography is difficult plus across Poland there are a multitude of different dialects and the like all with their own peculiarities. Plus there is a lot of debate still about which language each is a dialect of. It happens. I wasn't criticising in fact I was surprised that you were able to make such a good attempt. Polski isn't described as one of the world's most difficult for nothing. To be fair it's also worth knowing that not everyone you might meet is necessarily Polish in origin. Often the pronunciation carries over when say a Russian or Czech speaks another Slavonic language and subsequent generations continue the effect. And there is the issue of mutual intelligibility, in varying degrees across the whole language group. That one is legendary amongst the Slavonic group of European languages.
@TheVillageIdiot

@@emilduncanbrown8571 oh dont worry I know you werent being critical haha. Only a Polish national would be able to.say definitively, mind you even then itd be open to local Polish dialect (much like the Cow-ick/Co-wick here in the East Riding)
