Texan here. The blackouts were blamed on windmills, but windmills were what provided additional electricity, when gas lines had frozen. All Texans have paid an “upgrade fee” on every electric bill for the last ten years, since 2011. Those “upgrades” were never implemented. At all. Billions of dollars, just disappeared. We went to a family friends house in Plano, that had solar panels and a battery bank. They never lost power or heat. The solar panels recharged the batteries during the day. They even welcomed their neighbors to gather in their garage to warm up. (The homeowners husband is a paraplegic with MS several other medical conditions, so it was necessary to protect him from Covid.) They gave us hot water. They let us charge our devices. They didn’t ask for anything in exchange because they are good people. Those people did more for us during the 2-day freeze, than our Mayor and Governor ever did in the last ten years, since the last freeze in 2011 when the same thing happened. (Which was when we all started paying the “upgrade fee”)

@altrag
@altrag 2 жыл бұрын
@@atohms The US won't miss out on the shift to a green economy. They _will_ be significantly behind the ball and they'll miss out on much of the profit that early innovators in other countries will be able to pick up, but for all the rhetoric we see on TV at the end of the day, renewables are simply going to be cheaper than fossil fuels over time. They're already approaching that mark (solar is currently cheaper than coal, but that doesn't account for the necessary storage - but battery tech is rapidly catching up to panel tech and things will change very quickly once that milestone is passed). And that's just with respect to grid scale systems. Solar in particular has the rather rare property that it works almost equally effectively at any scale. The half dozen panels you install on your roof are nearly identical to the thousands or millions of panels that get installed on a grid scale solar farm, and their efficiency is also pretty even. In the US and other western nations, that simply means installing solar gets to be one of the few things individuals can actually do to help the planet (that and getting an EV - assuming you're charging it primarily with renewables - are probably the two biggest contributions a person can make on their own). But a more interesting - and perhaps over the long term more important - factor is that individuals in developing countries can also do that. Countries where power grids are extremely unreliable or don't exist at all for many communities. I stated that coal is still cheaper than renewables when you factor in the batteries, but there's an opposing factor we rarely think about in the west because its so commonplace here - grid infrastructure. Its one thing to build a new coal plant. Its quite another to run tens of thousands or even up to millions of miles of copper across your country, setup the required monitoring and failover systems, etc. Much of that would need to be done for grid scale solar as well, but that comes back to the original point - solar doesn't _have_ to be grid scale to be efficient. A lot of households and communities in the developing world are going with solar rather than waiting for/relying on their national governments to build out an already-unreliable grid to their area. There is downsides to that relative to a large scale grid (see: Texas last winter), but all of those downsides are rendered irrelevant when you don't have the option of a large scale grid connection in the first place. So there's still some hope for the world. The US is not the beacon of that hope as we all keep expecting them to be, and they show no signs of picking up the torch they dropped a couple decades ago. China keeps thinking about picking up the torch but also keeps dropping it again almost immediately for one reason or another. So its questionable who will end up leading the way. Seems almost like its going to be left to chance in a way - whatever nation happens to be the lucky one to develop the breakthrough in batteries or panels or some other relevant tech that knocks the TCO price tag down below the level that all the campaign donations the fossil fuel industry can muster won't be able to gloss over anymore.

Probably because they have enough intellect to see that all the so called "social" issues, are manufactured by and large. As to the environment, they are also smart enough not to by into the snake oil "climate change" narrative. We were told in the 70's we were all going to freeze to death in 10 years, didn't happen. We were told in the 80's we were all going to die in a fiery inferno, didn't happen. The ozone had a hole in it. Somehow that just healed itself right up. Then the "Global warming" catch phrase was invented until it didn't match reality so it was renamed "Climate Change". The climate does, has been and will continue to change, if it didn't explain how the Ice Age ended. All the Cavemen let their DeLorean's idle for hours in the caves? John Kerry and others have been making millions off this nonsense for years and he thanks you for your gullibility.

And renewable energy doesn't require the extensive production /labor force & transport network to make oil into fuel. Jobs killer. Won't buy oil from the Arabs. But I do believe there is still a place for oil/gas as a back-up/supplemental source. Wartime & gray/dark sunless days will cause trouble. CPS compensated me with about 8 $ and some change I think it was--lost power for the better part of the week. Worse than no power? 1 of 5 : Nuclear Power Plants just Boil Water (that spins a Turbine). 2 : Iceland uses their near-surface geothermal to Boil Water. 3 : Oil Companies already drill down far enough for that heat to Boil Water. 4: Retrofitting Existing Power Plants to use this Energy Generation is straightforward. 5 : So WHY has this not been done already? Because hiding profit growth in the constant supply of carbon energy is easy - regardless of whether the supply prices rise or drop.

The James River powered an entire Ironworks factory. Tredagar ran off a River. It also manufactured munitions during the Civil War which was so valuable, it burned along with Richmond. So renewable energy works and it can work now.

7:45 😕 I'm surprised Seth didn't point out that in any year there's a difference between unemployment for October vs December because retail and service/hospitality industries are always busier during December ie there's ALWAYS less unemployment at Christmas time every year and then doing the pre-pandemic vs post pandemic skewed comparison as well.. In my industry we hire at least a quarter more people just for Christmas.

And that wasn't even the biggest flaw imo. If you look at the graphic, they are comparing "Trump Peak" with Biden's current numbers. To at least attempt to have a meaningful comparison, you would need to compare Trump's peak with Biden's peak haha. Even that wouldn't really tell you anything.

Why does your country allow a television network to call itself a "news" channel, if it lies? Shouldn't there be a limit to this behaviour, regardless of political side etc.
