Today I played Gopher for the Atari 2600. Release Date: 1982
Don't even think for a second that you can save your carrots from this gopher terminator. He's coming, and he will win.
In this game you play as a Farmer trying to protect his crop of 3 carrots from an unstoppable Gopher.
Your only weapon is a shovel that can be used to fill in gopher holes or to smack the critter directly when he rushes your carrots. Be quick though cause his hit box is pretty precise.
Once a carrot is stolen the only way to get it back is to catch a seed from a bird that flies overhead every now and then. I love this mechanic cause you can kind of recover from a bad start but I still find grabbing the seed and planting it tricky, sometimes it just doesn't work. I probably just need to practice the timing more.
Difficulty ramps up insanely fast. It doesn't take long for the Gopher to run circles around you. If he feels like it he will end your game with a rapid carrot rush and you'll be stuck spamming your shovel attack hoping for a miracle lol.
5120 was one of the higher scores I was able to get during this sitting. I'm not sure if that a "good" score or not, but it was a vast improvement over my earlier attempts so I'll take it :)
I really have no complaints about Gopher. Sounds and graphics are both pleasing and the gameplay is frantic fun. If you like Atari 2600 and haven't played this I'd absolutely recommend. I reckon passing the controller between some friends and trying for high scores would actually be pretty entertaining too.
