In this GoPro tutorial I am going to show you the best GoPro settings for Low light video, so if you want to record at evening, sunset or sunrise or even at night these tips and tricks should help you out. I also cover Protune settings and show many examples using different camera settings so its easier to see the difference.
This tutorial is universal so it actually doesn't matter if you have GoPro 9 or gopro 8 or gopro 7 etc, obiously the newer the better but the settings I share in this video should help and explain how to record a video in low light with gopro.
00:00 Intro
00:23 ISO
01:44 FPS (Frames Per Second)
03:26 Resolution
03:45 EV compensation
04:35 EV Auto vs Manual exposure
06:38 GoPro Color / Flat colour
08:49 White Balance
10:41 Hypersmooth Stabilisation
12:04 Summary
12:26 Outro

In this GoPro Low light tutorial I am going to take a deeper look at Protune Settings and going to cover things such as ISO, Frames per second, Hypersmooth stabilisation, GoPro colour vs Flat colour, ev compensation and more.
Iso - in other words is responsible for How much your camera gonna be sensitive towards light. You can set this value as a minimum 100 and you can increase it up to 6400 ISO. However, on a gopro camera ISO 1600 and up is really terrible so I would suggest to always use your Is obetween 100-800 for low light video. WHen you boost up your iso there are some visual artifacts in the footage because your camera is so sensitive to light, its called noise/ grain so if you want to have the cleanest video possible always try to keep your iso the lowest as possible, during the day just go for 100 maybe max 200 but in low light try to have min 100 and max 400 if its still not enough you can increase to 800 max iso but you will see some more noise. Dont go above that number unless you just recorda family trip and you dont want care much about your video quality.
Frames Pers second - Think of FPS as a photo , in fact a video cosists from a number of photos taken within 1 second that as a whole make a one second of video. So if you for example have 24 fps it means that your camera gonna take 24 photos within a single second. Now there is a difference in how much light your camera gonna receive dependin on your Fps, if you record with 24 fps your camera gonna receive quite a lot of light during that time, now if you increase your FPS to a higher number , lets say 60 fps then every frame will not receive as much light as in previous example, so naturally your scene gonna get darker, The same goes if you use even higher fps such as 120 fps and 240 fps. So if you want to let more light into your camera then please stick to 24 fps.
Hypersmooth stabilisation - Digital stabilisation requires a ton of light to work effectively, because it needs that crystally clear frames to be able to align it correctly in your video. Now if the scene is dark, and the photos are blurry Hypersmooth is completely blind and cant really work its magic, it doesnt see the scene correctly thus resulting in jitters and shakes in your video from time to time. This way I strongly recommend a gimbal for low light shooting or at least a tripod. You can also Hold it in your hand but dont walk.
GoPro Colour or Flat - Fow low light video i highly recommend to go with Flat and then edit yourself, GoPro colour makes the scene contrasty and it simply can be too dark, its harder to recover in post production, so if you dont want to edit your videos gopro colour can give you already saturated and contrasty look, at times just too dark so if you want to avoid that and want to spend some time editing its better to go with flat, cause you have more control in post processing.

2:25 ive found that the same image shot in lowlight will have far more noise in 5k than 4k. Ive read that the reason is cause gopro anti-noise system do downscale/upscale in video. This is very noticeable if you record at night or really dark areas. So, as a tip, in low light its better to record record in 4k.

I really appreciate your detailed advice. In my newbie ignorance I used default settings to record a locked off wide shot of a Balinese Kecak dance rehearsal under low light and was devastated at the blurry moving faces. How could a 4K recording have such poor detail?!! Your settings suggestions make so much sense, especially to ditch Gopro colour for Flat. No more black crushing. :) Hopefully I'll have much better 2nd camera vision for the live performance in mid-October. Thanks you Tomasz!

Great video Tomasz, I am using my Gopro as main vlog camera and Sony A7III for low light. My issue is that I often don’t carry both if its not planned and at the moment I’m in Japan and shot a low light video in Tokyo which turn out to be really bad on the gopro. There are lots of lights but not enough and I wish I saw this video before. I will go to Tokyo in a couple of days and try again, I will have the A7III just in case, but want to try your tips to see what I can create. Great video and I’ll sub, thank you 😊

This is the best explanation i saw on KZfaq 👍 Brother m from india m using gopro 10 and my footages r cming really bad and smtimes too dark in low light conditions or evening. This is my protune sett: Res 1080 bitrate high shutter auto ev comp -0.5 white balance auto iso min 100 iso max 1600 sharpness low Color flat. Plz recommend me wat settings i cn change for better footages in low light and in evening.

This camera has a very smal image sensor and honestly if there is not much lught u wont make a miracle with it , i would stick to max 800 iso, and 24 or 30 fps, 4k or 5k , ev 0 but u still need some good lighting

@@Tomasz.Nowacki i want a video from you as per your experienced about how to gopro hero rotate with shorty gimble by hand while recording. I mean what is the essential way to rotate by hands very smoothly and nicely , there should not be hand shaking up or down while recording. Thank you

I love the comparison of flat/edited flat/vibrant thart starts ~8:20 ! It really shows that using flat makes you able to recreate the natural real-life vibrant feel, and still save the information in the shadows. Now, 2 years later, do you remember roughly how you edited it? Was it only saturation and some contrast added to the flat, or did you use other color grading tools too? Do you have some sort of "go-to solution" for making flat more 'natural vibrant'?
@Tomasz.Nowacki
@Tomasz.Nowacki 6 ай бұрын
Hmm in a nutshell i just increase saturation and add contast and sharoness to it , sometimes fix white balance

Really great. I love this. Have watched some presentations on these settings but they normally just tell you what to use, I loved this run-through of WHY. Just one thing though... the volume of your music is wayyy too high, really out of sync with the volume of your talking, I got a shock every time the music came on and had to lower the volume quickly and keep lowering/ making it higher every time you changed between talking and music. Other than that, great
