Why does your video go from having no crawfish in the trap to being full? You don't even show them entering the trap.
@Johnbone896 жыл бұрын
Brian Bambl i was thinking the same thing, but its probably bc they entered in at such a slow pace that it would have been way boring or would have taken too long? Just a guess

Is this the Frabill Crawfish Trap? If so what do you think about it, would you recommend it?
@tomham625 жыл бұрын
You know I’m not sure. Forgive me but is that a brand or a type of trap? I bought it at a sporting goods store used it the once in this video and my cohort has been using it since. It worked great to my mind. I’ve had plenty of time to think bait since posting this and I feel like that is more important than the trap. Something that smells but can’t actually be eaten like a punctured can of cat food would have kept the little buggers coming.

It was smelt from a local gas station bait fridge. For some reason it had been dyed with a bright florescent green dye which makes it look banana like. Some of the other comments here have a bunch of different ideas for bait.

@tomham629 жыл бұрын
It was some smelt dipped in some green fluorescent goo from the local gas station bait fridge. You are not the first to think it was banana peels. If you read through the comments here there are a number of other recommendations on baits for crawfish. Apparently they will eat about anything if it is meat of some sort.

what is the trap name model or manufacturer and what water way where you fishing in?
@tomham627 жыл бұрын
David Quintero I'm not sure of the model or make of the trap but they are pretty common. I picked it up at a general sporting goods store that has a hunting and fishing department. I'm sure if you looked on Amazon you'd find something identical. As for the body of water it was Lake Macgregor in North West Montana. It is somewhat well known for Crawfish, youca see them on the bottom from the dock.

i made a cray fish trap but is way different, and in my opinion, better. i made it 4x4 feet, and the wals came up 18 inches. there was no lide, it was like a basket. it was square and solid. i used a zip tie to place the bait to the wire. the cray fish would climb the walls, and drop into the basket, and eat away. i came along in my boat, and just pulled the rope straight up. i would have a basket with 100+ cray's easy. all those ones that were stuck on the outside cuz they didn't know how to get in, would have been in my trap i built.

Awesome video. I will be making me some traps. Did you just use a banana peel to bait them or was there something else ? I was thinking about dog food in a plastic container.
@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
They were smelt strips bought at a local gas station. They were died fluorescent green for some reason so they sort of look like banana peels. I'm told dog food would work well also. Good idea using a plastic container with some holes so the scent gets out but the crawfish can't eat up all the bait.
@joshyoung162310 жыл бұрын
Tom Hamilton i tried dog food last year in water rich with crawdads, all I caught was minnows and small goggle eye.
@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
josh young Must be very wary crawdads in your neck of the woods. From what I saw at this lake they would eat just about anything. I would have thought dog food would be excellent.
@joshyoung162310 жыл бұрын
Yeah me to, I think part of the problem is that dog food floats. I probably could have rigged something up to keep it on the bottom of the trap, but decided to use different baits instead.
@ssc514010 жыл бұрын
I used a plastic container with a few holes drilled in top and that kept dog food inside and still escaped enough to draw the crawfish in. I'm hooked now.
@rxwm2110 жыл бұрын
what bait did you use?
@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
Smelt from the bait fridge at a gas station. It was coloured fluorescent green for some reason. Seems like most baits will work. In a couple of other traps we used chicken livers and fish eggs. The one thing I'd do differently is to lut the bait in something they could smell but not consume. Would probably have caught more.

OddballOutdoors in the UK, running water is more common to find them, probably cause they are tiny and try finding them in a big lake, they must live in lakes too, cos I used to catch them in the run off from local reservoir. the one that Rudyard Kipling (jungle book) was named after.

@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
We left it in overnight. So maybe 7:00 P.M. until 10:00 A.M.. I'd say maybe 20 feet deep probably a bit less. The big mistake in retrospect was leaving the bait loose. We should have put it in a can and punched holes or something. Once it was eaten it stopped attracting.

Tom Hamilton Want a great tip: A pro crayfish trapper discovered a secret, he always put his traps in lakes, anyways, he used an underwater cam and saw crayfish all around the traps but wasn't getting them into his traps, he'd catch an average amount, but still he saw them all around his traps. He discovered if you use dark material on the traps such as woven cord or cloth then your catch triples! The reason is that the crayfish feel safer, like their going under a rock. He went from catching an average amount, to tripling his catch to the amazement of other pro crayfish trappers in the area.

Her urine should be tested for proteins, as women with GDM are at increased risk of hypertensive disorders (e.g., pregnancy induced hypertension or preeclampsia). Note that renal glycosuria frequently occurs in normal pregnancies; thus there is no value in testing for urinary glucose. A delivery at 38 weeks should be considered, as there is a risk of macrosomia and increased perinatal morbidity with advancing gestational age. In addition, her blood pressure should be monitored regularly, to screen for hypertensive disorders. Insulin should not be commenced immediately;

What did you use for bait?
@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
Fluorescent green smelt from the gas station bait fridge. Another trap had chicken livers. Seems like they will eat anything. It occurred to me after watching a similar movie that I should have put the bait in a can and punched holes in it or used a small cage of some sort so the crayfish couldn't eat everything before more of their friends could be attracted into the trap.
@sseeaahhaawwkkssrule97510 жыл бұрын
The entrance looks like it would allow the crayfish to climb back out of the trap as well. Is it just the camera angle?
@tomham6210 жыл бұрын
The opening is funnel shaped, leading in. Essentially crayfish are lousy problem solvers. It is easy enough to wander up the sloped entry and in, but they'd have to put in a little thought and effort into getting out again. Jump and swim out or crawl upside down or some combination of manoeuvers to get out. We even had a fish stuck in one of the traps, again not quite smart enough to realize how simple the exit was. The trap is a variation on many lobster or crab traps.

Look throughout the comments here. There are lots of bait ideas. I think the key is to use something that attracts the crayfish but they can't consume there fore allowing it to work longer. I used smelt which eventually got eaten. I understand cat food in the can with some holes punched in it is supposed to work well.

They're not too picky, you just want something with fatty oils for scent to travel. Try leaving some raw bacon in an old sock. Try a blend of meat, bacon, bacon grease and a whole fish or piece of chicken, you can use bait cages or even just sock or panty-hose and wrap in twine. people used to just tie lunch meat to a string one nd of a stick and pull them out when they grab on haha

I'm sure there were a few but that is the nature of these traps. They funnel the crawfish (or in other cases lobsters or crabs) in but the little beggars aren't bright enough to get out again without a lucky jump or enough other crawfish that they pile up to the exit. I suspect they aren't even aware they are in a trap and have no urge leave in a hurry. The food is near is all they care about.

Well, you've located a good spot, but everything else screams amateur. Check into pyramid traps, the ones that professionals use. You'll notice the size of the mesh. It allows the small ones to exit, unimpeded. There is also an entrance on every side. Craw-feesh don't have to struggle getting to the bait. (Half of the 'dads never got near the entrance) And your bait? Not even middle of the road bait. Catfood is even worse. Oily fish is near the top. "Melt", beef or pork spleens, are best. (Ask your butcher if you don't have a local Custom Slaughter Co near you)
