@@canyonblue737-8 Yeah true, but have to be honest the iPhone 14 footage at the start was the benchmark and against that the DJI looks fine. For what it's worth, I think the iPhone looks pretty bad actually considering how much Apple touts the camera as 'Pro'.

After doing many tests, the provided GoPro settings are not good. The 5.3K, strangely, makes the image less appealing and introduces more grain; 4K is the top choice. Then in the settings, you should set the maximum ISO to 400 and MOST IMPORTANTLY, for color management, never leave it on "natural" but always choose "flat". It's amazing how much more detail you get, better shadows, and an overall better image compared to "natural", which generally ruins the image, regardless of conditions but ESPECIALLY in the dark. It's a game changer! In short, the best settings for a GoPro are 4K30, 400 ISO MAX, Flat colors, and stabilization at the minimum (not turned off, but at the lowest setting). This way, you save on battery and avoid motion blur in low light conditions! With these settings, the GoPro becomes an entirely different camera.

Great point about deciding what your priorities are. I don’t expect an action camera to do much in low light. The DJI is obviously better in real low light, but in moderate light, the GoPro is doing a better job of protecting highlights while the DJI cam is clipping them. Also, this is reminding me of just how long it’s been since I’ve been to Amsterdam, Utrecht and the Netherlands in general! Thanks for sharing that beautiful evening bike ride!

Easily fixed with adjusting the EV to -0.3 or even to -0.7. out of the box the auto exposure seems to prioritise differently thus blowing out the highlights. While the H12 footage often times looks a touch (too) dark as a trade off. So either controlling EV or actually changing to manual and flat profiles changes the quality of the action 4 by a lot. Granted, then it becomes more of a hassle if you just want an action cam that you operate in a set-and-go fashion.

Imho the size matters. And the point where gopro was losing is the moment when not enough light could get to sensor. In daytime, whoever would like totake maximum of camera, would use gp log od action 4 d log for colouring and manage colours in post production. So dji is able to be colored as gopro but night time gopro is completly unusable and it's not just bosting highlights. What's more action 4 records gyro data so stabilization can be done also in post production. As for me - diving in caves and caving there is no other option than dji. I've been waiting for this comparison but I already purchased dji action 4 diving housing because Gopro just cannot manage and do anyghing with this sensor. Thanks and keep it going !

And this is the reason I bought a full frame sensor Panasonic S5ii, low light video is an achilles heel for many video cameras. The GoPro clearly has much better, natural colours, but the DJi is employing software trickery and over-compensating with high iso. The video at 7:34 clearly shows this - you can barely see your shoe in the DJI, but the GoPro handles it well.

DJI's overexposure during daylight can be pulled back by tweaking the default EV/shutter speed settings down and then set to 'normal' for twilight into night time. There's nothing on the GoPro to give you that extra 45mins - hour of filming before you have to get your phone out. (Up to a point), I'd rather have some jitters in the shot than not being able to see peoples faces. Looks like too much fall off in the overall image on the GoPro when it starts to get dark. These are amazing cameras, but it will be a few more years before I can take only one camera out for my bikepacking travel videos. Thanks taking the time to show the average user what happens to both these cameras when evening falls. 👍

In my opinion, GoPro is definitely better than the Osmo 4. DJI brightens the highlights too much and doesn't allow for details to be captured in the recorded objects. This follows the same rule found in photography: it's better to take a darker picture and brighten it with software than to capture an overexposed image, which leaves little space to work with afterward. GoPro captures a significantly wider color spectrum, as can be seen in this and many other videos. Thanks for this comparison video :)

Both are excellent cameras, Dji better at night (I didn't understand why the GoPro moved so much if my Hero10 doesn't move like that at night) in Mexico GoPro is cheaper than Osmo, with the addition that I can have several enduro batteries ( generic) on the other hand, in the Osmo the batteries must be original (70-90€), the compatibility of low-cost accessories of the GoPro and the plus of the wireless audio I think gives points in favor of Gopro. matter of taste. They are very similar cameras, each with its unique qualities. In the end it is better to make good content with a lower quality camera than bad content with an excellent quality camera. Greetings, I like your channel. I'm your fan

Is this straight out of the box exposure settings? The DJI is at least one stop brighter in exposure, it's like DJI made the decision that highlights do not matter lets blow them out to show more in the shadows. GoPro has taken the opposite approach conserving more detail in the highlights and allowing you to pull the exposure up in post if you want to. On the shaded, daylight, forest trail the GoPro footage was so much better.

What I noticed across the board was just 2 simple things that can have a pretty big effect. 1. GoPro exposes better for highlights (crushes shadows), DJI exposes better for shadows (blows out highlights). 2. GoPro has a warmer image, DJI has a cooler image (GoPro looks better to me in general but the DJI is probably more accurate) Also, HDR on the GoPro does give a pretty good low light boost to the image. It removes shadow grain and adds back it detail. Improves stabilization. Works along lit streets at night (I have no clue about other scenarios) But if you have some light across the image the HDR will make everything look better.

If you use the correct settings for low light shooting - 24fps with 1/48th shutter speed (180 degree rule), their respective log / flat modes and then you correctly color graded the footage the results would be significantly better. If you really asked both brands what the best settings for low light were and if they really answered 30fps non-log/flat modes their representatives either have no clue what they're talking about or they were fooking with you.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 11 ай бұрын
I always find comments like this funny, because it’s someone who thinks they’re smart, but actually doesn’t know what they’re talking about. If you did, then you’d know that you can’t actually enable LOG mode in conjunction with DJI’s low light mode. If you actually wanted more flexibility to grade, you’d also increase bit-depth, but even GoPro’s top engineer clearly stated in a conference call that doing so isn’t going to change the light properties of the camera in low light conditions meaningfully. Likewise, color grading any footage will make it appear better, but it’s still crap in, crap out. All you’re effectively doing is brightening an image at that point, which can help, but isn’t any different than cranking the ISO and watching either stabilization reduce or noise increase.

@@DcrainmakerI always find comments like this funny, because it's always a clueless KZfaqr arguing with a professional filmmaker and thinking they know better. It makes for some funny reading, but it gets old. Keeping this simple, so you can follow, the way to improve low light IQ is to always record in as low an fps as you possibly can. If you have the option of recording at 24fps, you do it. You're recording at 30fps, so you're already doing it wrong. If your focus is to maximize IQ, you do not record in a preset low light mode - the only thing that does is to apply an aggressive in-camera noise reduction algorithm, which obviously destroys the footage. The solution is to record in a mode that preserves as much detail as possible (log or flat), with NR as low as possible, and then apply a proper NR algorithm in Resolve Studio. The preset low light mode is there to make things faster, not better - if your focus is IQ, that is never the way to go. Finally, the reason you always color grade (from a log / flat profile) is to avoid the unnaturally warm and oversaturated colors these action cameras usually go for - 80% of your footage looks awful. Again, all from a professional filmmaker point of view - for an amateur YT video this is probably good enough.

@@ricardolourizela5961 "If your focus is to maximize IQ, you do not record in a preset low light mode - the only thing that does is to apply an aggressive in-camera noise reduction algorithm, which obviously destroys the footage." - The problem is, that's factually untrue. Go try it. Don't record in the low-light mode and see how bad it is. Because it's not just about light, it's about stabilization. That's the thing you're missing in this entire picture. On an action camera there are far higher levels of stabilization algorithms occurring, and those algorithms account for the exact movement of the camera. When you go to DLOG mod on the Action 4, those algorithms are significantly reduced. So sure, you get a flatter picture that you can pretend to pull more light out of, but you're left with mush for an image. Everything you said is perfectly fine for a normal camera, but not an action camera, and frankly, not most cameras in 2023 with far greater degrees of computational photography happening.

This might be straying outside the scope of your comparison, but I'd be interested to see what can be done with each camera's video in post-production. Underexposed imagery often contains details that aren't visible until enhancement with brightness/contrast/gamma adjustments, etc., but once the sensor is saturated, those details are gone.

I'm the Boomer who's still using his GoPro Hero 4 Black and I'm quite content with the footage I get. I also love my DJI Air 2s drone. I tend to find that chasing the latest technology is expensive and you're better off waiting. Buying a model that's 3, 4, 5 models back saves you quite a bit of money, and in most cases, you're not sacrificing too many options. I mean, if you're making videos as a top KZfaqr or you have some other kind of business where the extra bit of crispness is worth the money because your clients are paying you good money, then by all means, have at it. But if you're just shooting video for your own use, does this year's model really stand out over last year's model? Or the model from three years ago?

There have been numerous comparison reviews on KZfaq pitting the DJI Osmo Action 4 against the GoPro Hero 12, and it can be overwhelming. In a nutshell, GoPro's competitors, especially the DJI Osmo Action 4, have caught up, if not surpassed GoPro. The Osmo Action 4 boasts a larger sensor, which translates to better performance in low-light conditions. I currently own a GoPro Hero 10, which has gained notoriety for camera freezes, overheating, and subpar battery life. However, it appears that GoPro has addressed these issues in its 12th edition. At a price point of $299 (due to my subscription), including two Enduro batteries, the GoPro Hero 12 seems like a worthwhile investment to explore. Also, I have the media mod, so I wouldn't need to pick up any more accessories.

To me it simply looks like the DJI is brighter at the base settings, it blows out the highlights when you have a brighter portion of the image so that seems to me to confirm it does not have better dynamic range. So if you want equivalent exposure on the GoPro just adjust the EV and you can get the same “Brightness” in low light and blow out any highlights like the DJI. Just my opinion. That last scene look at his tennis shoe it’s totally blow out on the DJI.

Go pro 12 is my first action camera. I had her for two weeks. During this time I tried all possible options. But I couldn’t get it to shoot at least satisfactorily in low light conditions, without a stabilizer. The whole problem is that to avoid blurring while moving, you must set the shutter speed to 250 or higher. This makes the video very dark. You should use ISO 3200-6400 in this mode. This adds a lot of noise. And still the picture remains dark. I also tried to fix this in post-processing, but the result was unsatisfactory. I tried shooting without stabilization and then using gyroflow to stabilize it. Filmed in hdr and gp-log. I installed the labs firmware and played with different settings there. Nothing helped. I'm tired of the fact that my $100 phone takes better pictures in the evening. Today I sold the camera. In a nutshell, owning it can be described as I love it and I hate it. She is beautiful during the day. And in the evening it's just a nightmare

Best reviews on youtube on this channel. Thank you very much Ray! When it comes to GoPro vs. DJI Action as someone who is mountain biking a lot, the stabilization jitters of the DJI action are a dealbreaker. The appear consistently even with good light and on mellow trails and look terrible even on a smartphone screen. It seems that all the paid reviews are kind of hiding that fact but it is clearly visible in decent comparison footage.

Back to that ‘I don’t care what you buy, buy a potato if you want to’ more camera reviewers should adopt that approach! I think Chris-jd3gd’ comment above pretty much nailed it…thought I would add GP ‘light trails etc’ and OA4’s great functionality. We rarely do any night video, but do a lot of videos in forest settings so OA4 may have an edge there as light usually low. Choose and get out there!

Theoretically the action 4 should win hands down in a low light test because of physicals. both as far as i can tell have the same focal ratio or F/ stop, so no advantage there. The A4 has a larger sensor so collects more light, but the GP12 has a higher pixel count which is actually worse because What is important is the actual individual pixel size. less pixels in a larger sensor means more light collection, simply because the pixels are larger..... But perhaps the last bit that never gets mentioned is quantum efficiency, something anyone that does astro photography will know about. In short each new generation of sensor gets more efficient at detecting photons. This might not be in play here, but if we assume gp12 is the same sensor as the gp11, its a 2 year old sensor, if the sensor in the A4 is a new sensor then it is one generation advanced so better at detecting light. not sure that in an action cam it would make a vast difference but in astro cams, it can be the difference between a tiny faint star not showing in an image and it showing

outch, i cant watch the right side of the screen.. the image looks over motion blured and shaky.. it gives ne headache.. the color if the GP12 is better than the OA3.. But in general the OA3 is better to watch.. more details and also the motion blur dont make it to "washy".. the light porblem is known and ok, compared to the other thing i am happy i bought the OA3 :)

I feel like the gopro is a better straight out of the box run and gun camera, while the Action 4 is similar but gives you the best quality when you use D-log and do some post processing

I wonder how these cameras would do with a full-sized camera gimbal for someone walking around in the evening. I see the Insta360 Ace Pro does a better job at night but it's also quite a bit more expensive. Like you said, it depends one what and when someone wants to film and under what conditions.

You asked the companies for their "Low light" settings and said DJI says no rocksteady + then the first clip you show RS+? When RS+ is on it turns off the low light image enhancement, but if you use EIS Priority setting in low light ON if you prefer to have stabilization over a brighter cleaner image when in lower light. When you turn it on it even says it will remove motion blur. You'll tend to get a darker image like the go pro is when you're in lower light, but when you're in actual lower light the opposite effect happens when the go pro has the jitters and action4 has brightness and stability like in clips: 8:40, 8:51, 12:56. The easiest comparison to make is just try to use both cameras in doors.

DjI might over expose in daylight. But it has stabilizer. You can’t use any video editor to eliminate over exposure. So if you have dji you better not filming under sunlight. If you have GoPro you better not filming at night.

Another great video around Amsterdam including a few of my favorite spots! Based on this it sounds like I’ll have to get two cameras! GoPro Hero 12 for daytime and DJI Action 4 for night time as I love those dusk night time clips! Hopefully this gets GoPro to take some action for improvements. Have they responded or are there settings to help improve their outcomes as the GoPro seemed almost unusable. See you on the cycle path!
