Have been vlogging with the Hero 7 for ages. To be honest this has just really been a software tweak and no doubt could have been added to the Hero 7 as an update. Depends on the price of the audio case, etc. Still not happy about the last camera and its clunky audio adapter which I still never managed to get hold of as out of stock forever. Think to get fully working vlog setup with all its accesories is going to be about same price as a mirroless camera.

Congratulations. You made a review saying that the hero 8 is better without saying that the hero 7 suddenly became rubish or that it`s footage is unusable. I have been so upset with all the reviews suddenly bashing the hero 7. The gimball killer is now awful... Don`t you think that the main improvements seem like a software update. It seems to me gopro could make some software update to the 7 and it could be the same as the 8.

GoPro just removed their core features (replaceable lens cover, replaceable frame), made no significant improvements (front lcd), and just made some software tweaks that could be made available on hero7 too.

Have they fixed the live streaming problems where it would freeze during streaming or stop working entirely ?

Excellent just keep the hero black 7 there's no big difference I did notice any difference I just use the 8 to day a friend who works for go pro in San Francisco and it's not a huge difference except Battery life in a few extra things

i really wish they put the front facing screen built in to the front. I don't want to add the mod for a flip screen because that mod housing is pretty damn big and I don't need all the other extra ports and features of it. I just want the screen.

U know I was gonna get it to replace my hero 6 but as soon as he said “no changeable lens” I was pisssss

I'm wondering how would users replace those lenses in the field, when they are not able to go to a GoPro's repair service. With old GoPros I can always take some extra lenses with me for situations when I break it and then I can quickly replace it. TBH, I think the new GoPro is rather made for vlogging users, who don't go in for extreme sports. I would not buy GoPro 8 now and would better wait for some possible solutions for protecting the lens or replacing it somehow. Otherwise it's much better for me to buy GoPro 7 instead.

I think a standard Tripod mount/threads would be a game changer. I am not sure the changes to the battery door etc etc are worth it. Linear in 4K sounds good. Anyone do solid lowlight. My 7 stabilization really does poor in low light. nice review. Not sure this is work the upgrade. Still need to think about it.

How is the responsiveness of the screen UI? I find on my Hero 7 that the UI is quite hard to use sometimes as its just not as quick or responsive as a modern smartphone. i.e moving between screens just isn't as smooth as it could be, or it takes multiple attempts to select something or swiping between media is jerky and slow.

Great review! I’m thinking the 8 will be a good tool for my videos. Hyper smooth in every resolution is a huge feature, especially for slow motion modes.

Hypersmooth is not available in 4K 60fps in Linear mode.

The biggest problem with any of these action cameras is low light. They look great on sunny, clear days, but as soon as it come overcast or dark you might as well try filming on a potato.

The battery performance will be worse than hero 7 black because of upgraded features and external screens and upgraded case with shotgun microphones. If you value every minute possible from gopro skip the eight it will drain batteries much faster. I'll be keeping my two hero 7 black models for the better battery life. Ggg imagine adding lights a microphone in the accessories case going to really hurt those batteries a lot.

Dont get the logic of the guys behind the design of the gopro 8. They left the same battery inside from hero 5/6/7 but with each generation more functions and futures added, battery life is less and less lower vs hero5. Next one is the lens, once cracked what a pain i need to cross in order to change the glass? It is a gopro ffs we all know the scenary we use them ... and risck of smash it is very high. All the accessories from hero 5/6/7 for lens are junk today for hero8.

@Engadget While your demo is interesting with good examples, your demo of stabilization is jittery and does not show the true stabilization quality as it actually is and your Time-Warp demo is dropping frames. I can't imagine why a professional reviewer would use a frame rate circa 1927 chosen to support audio recording on celluloid film. Presumably "experts" will know that "cinematic quality" (your apparent obsolete assumption) has little to do with framerate and is a combination of lighting, framing, angle, sound quality, editing, story-flow, setting, surroundings, exposure, color-science, and other non-framerate factors related to the final goal of the clip. Also, an expert should know that KZfaq does not employ Telecine 3:2 pulldown as streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney, et-al. provide for smoothing out 24-fps movies. Shouldn't you know that outside of a 24-fps or 120-fps monitor, standard 30/60-fps monitors (I use a 60-fps gaming monitor) have a math problem with 24-fps? Sadly, you did an injustice to GoPro's excellent new product by introducing jitter/judder.

I'm not a fan of the built-in mount. It seems that would place more stress on the camera frame. The lack of replaceable lens protector is regrettable and GoPro may soon regret that. It seems they have forgotten who their target audience is.

Every review claims 'the 8B takes all the features we love and makes them better'....except for reliability. That has remained since the inception of GoPro.

I had to take off the lens cover pretty often and clean the inside when I was shooting in water (or in the cold) because of fogging. how will I do that with the 8?

lol, the built in finger is not a "game changer", frames with charging ports all over fleabay, and I'de rather leave it camera in the frame, it's easier to swap out cameras from cheap frame to cheap frame than to deal with that fiddly screw. I have a frame for each of my accessory, they're dirt cheap on ebay, so buy a few.

I dont like this new body tbh 1.) The shell was also a *protective case* and was replaceable. You scratch or scuff this, and its gonna stay like if 2.) I see the lens isnt protruding You damage that and it's done I dropped my gopro hero 7 last year from high up on hard concrete, damaged the lens and I was just able to replace it Cant say the same would happen for this
