GoPro Hero 9, 10 and 11 SD card errors? GoPro Freezing? Here's how you finally fix these issues!

In this video we look at the most common reason for GoPro Freezing and SD errors, and how to properly fix your SD card to stop these issues from happening again.

Do NOT use Sandisk ULTRA cards, they are NOT compatible with GoPro cameras (and in my opinion they are just TERRIBLE cards).

I’ve made it a habit now to just go ahead and do a full format on my PC prior to using a new card. I then format again in the camera of course. Ever since doing this AND switching to Samsung Pro Plus cards, I’ve not had issues with my Hero 10’s. Thanks for the video!

You are very welcome, glad that it worked out. I haven't used the Pro Plus cards yet, I'm still using the Evo cards and they work just fine even though I've bumped the camera bitrate up to 190mbps. With the release of the Hero 12 in September, upgrading to the Pro Plus may be required.

This tip works. Thanks I reformatted the card in a computer and then formatted in the gopro. Then set the gopro 11 up in the same way it used to over heat or freeze. On a tripod with the add on screen and an external mic. No freezing. Tested it a few times

Thanks for this info. Been having issues with the camera powering off for no reason. This solution hopefully will stop this from happening again. Always thought that the GoPro format routine did a full format but according to this video it doesn’t.

The clue is that a full format of a 128gb SD card should take 12 mins or more. A quick format only takes about 30 seconds. Hope the format trick helps, let me know how it goes.

After experiencing some "SD Card error" messages on my motorcycle ride today, I've decided to check for solutions. I'm following your instructions right now: full format the SD on the laptop, factory reset the GoPro (Hero 6 Black) and THEN format the SD inside the GoPro again. I hope it works! Let me know if it works! Freezing is almost always caused by a corrupt or too slow an SD card (that's gets corrupted as a result). So a complete format will help with that.

@@Morphaplasm Glad this helped. I think your MacBook was showing you 4 different file formats to choose from. You only need to use the default as your MacBook will base the format on the type of card inserted. If you run into trouble, download the card formatting tool from SDCARD.ORG They make a version for Windows and Mac

Good video, what happens if the card has been formatted on a Mac and you use windows to re format as in video will it erase any mac formatting. I have now turned to Macbook for video making but my original pictures and sound are on windows. I want to save windows pictures documents video and sound music on an external hard drive and use on Mac but seems to be two different entities, any tips.

Yes, you'll have to use a PC. The camera can only do a quick format. You'll need a full format of the card on a PC. Make sure you're not using a SanDisk Ultra card or a fake card.

I got my GoPro 11 today and it's back screen isn't working out of the box while the front screen is stuck at GoPro 11 logo. I have tried all common methods including manual firmware update, it did show the firmware update process on the front screen but nothing changed.

Try factory resetting your camera using the method in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9Fjp8apytDcdnk.html If that doesn't work, then it may be time to contact GoPro Customer Service. Also make sure you're using a recommended SD card and not something like a Sandisk Ultra card....

You've been a big help to me on these videos and on the forums. Question for you--You mentioned to me that you format on the computer maybe just the first time and then from there format on the GoPro. May I ask how you transfer your data from GoPro to computer? My process for most of the time has been I remove the SD card from the GoPro, put it on a reader on my Mac, copy all the files over to my computer for later editing, eject the SD card, put it back in the GoPro, and then format from the GoPro to erase the card. Is this how you do it? I have a new SD card that I've used for about 3 weeks, formatted on the computer the first time, but just recently had an issue of it looking like it was recording, red light blinking, but when I stopped I found the counter had stopped and the camera was locked up. Had to remove the battery. So, I've done a full format again on the computer. Wondering if something in my process is causing an issue. Thank you.

Like you I transfer using an SD card reader as it's the fastest way to transfer large files. I only do the pc format if the card is showing issues, sometimes you can just get a bad card. It's why I only use the Samsung cards, they've always been reliable for me. Some users have had issues using sandisk cards with the Hero 9, when they switched to a Samsung card,, no more issues or at least that's what was reported to me. Hopefully that helps!

No, more likely you have a very slow SD card reader.

Just found your tips...Have a GoPro hero 8 I got in 2021…Worked flawlessly up til this past September when I went to Disney World with family…By day 2, it kept randomly shutting down saying SSD card error, please repair…Did repair a few times…Since then, it was doing the red light of death...I finally got the red light of death 2 stop...Now, I get freezing up, locking up in settings, or corrupting footage…B4 I start recording, it turns on and off a few times w occasional freeze…Took it to Hawaii as a (U BETTER WORK OR I'M TOSSING IT INTO THE OCEAN) type of thing...Day 1, I had a red light of death moment...Day 2 minimal freeze but had 2 corrupted footages…Day 3, it started working like nothing happened and lasted all day...By Day 4 thru 9, the wheels just fell off...Freezing, turning on and off a few times, weird beeping, sd card errors...I just gave up the rest of hawaii...I am getting frustrated at this non sense of (I will work, I will decide not to work) shenganians...I have a GoPro Volta that is a month old…When my hero 8b works, the volta is awesome...I’m using SanDisk 256gb…I don’t kno what 2 do…I’m very frustrated and getting super aggravated…I am currently trying your method b4 I GO INSANE...Luckily, I have gopro support on standby to send me a replacement soon... Hi Jeff from Boston.... SD error messages are a sure sign that you have a corrupt SD card. Formatting the card in the camera will NOT Fix SD card corruption. To fix that, it requires a full format in a pc (which should take about 20 mins for a 256GB card). If using a MAC, I recommend going to SDCARD.ORG and downloading the official formatting tool from there. It's nice that you say you have a "Sandisk", however Sandisk make many different SD cards, not all of them are compatible with a GoPro. For instance, the worst Sandisk card to use would be a "Sandisk ULTRA" card which is far too slow for your GoPro and can actually damage it. So make sure if you have a Sandisk Ultra, you do the proper thing with it (throw it in the trash..... then light the trash can on fire.... then run over the flaming trash can with a tank....). Hopefully all of this gets your GoPro working again! Good luck!

I think the SD card I'm using is too big. It's a one Tbit card, but it keeps freezing. I followed the steps and always format before setting up a new card. But yeah, the go pro just does not like it.

Depends on which camera model you're using. Frankly I never use more than 512GB, however 1TB cards will work on some models. What I would ask myself is how much you paid for that card? If it was about $40, then likely you have either too slow a card or a fake card.

Will probably be just fine. I would say an 8K boost would either come from software, not sensor. There's always a chance of bit rate reduction with 8K to keep everything manageable too. However I don't think 8K is on the cards for the Hero 13, I would say if there's a resolution increase, it would be 6K and only in certain settings.

Thanks for the video…..I never did this to my card for my hero 11……however I can take nice videos and also view media in quick app…..but when I try and upload to the cloud, the GoPro simply powers off and I can’t get my videos into the cloud….iv watched videos on how to upload to the cloud and I think I’m doing everything I can correctly, any opinions??

The GoPro should automatically upload if it's been set up properly. If it's powering off, it's because it's not connecting to the cloud for auto upload. I would check the auto upload settings on the camera itself to make sure it's been turned on.

Pc will default to the proper format for the card. Since the instructions clearly tell you to format the card again in the gopro afterwards, it will be formatted to what the gopro profers

@@christiansmithtaylor2900 I used them in all my GoPro's and I regularly film in 5.3K. 4K is the most popular format there is, 5.3K is only specialized use, so Samsung aren't going to list 5.3k, most people haven't even heard of it. So they'll list terms people do know, which is 4K.

I did a format on GoPro, laptop and GoPro again last night and this morning I did a factory reset on GoPro for first time in over 2 years. I been getting shutdown itself and wasnt sure if it’s the SD card or overheating. I did buy a GoPro fan though Not sure what’s the best advice. Formatting your SD card before or after factory reset your GoPro.

Format your card first. Factory reset your GoPro If your camera is shutting down due to overheating, you'll see a message on bootup saying "Your camera shutdown due to overheating". If you don't see this message, then you could be using a fake or too slow an SD card (such as a Sandisk Ultra which should never be used in a GoPro camera).

I did that and it worked. However i found inserting the card into other devices such phone corrupt the card again. Copying files from the camera to the computer works fine.

Different devices use different formats, you shouldn't swap cards between devices.

Hi there,great video if only it worked for me. I have a gopro 11black got a Sandisk 256 GB sd card ,I formatted it in the camera before I used it,I filled it nearly all up , got home nd uploaded to the cloud. I have got all the footage but now it just says sd card error. I have tried what you did but my comp doesn’t recognise it. I take it you mean a "sandisk Extreme Pro" Should be a black and gold card? Where did you buy the card? Sometimes online retailers can ship fake or faulty cards. The fact that your computer won't recognize the card is a definite sign of a failed card. I would try using a Samsung Evo Plus card instead, I found them to be much more reliable. amzn.to/40SKAQL

Ok thanks for that,Yes it was a Sandisk extreme pro 256 gb so card. I used it just once to film my trip of a lifetime to the Maldives in March, fortunately I managed to upload the footage to the GoPro cloud but now it just says sd card error. I got the card from Amazon . The card won’t even format says card is busy ? Looks like a new is required bummer

@@ScottieD53 Your card won't format in the GoPro if it's corrupt. This is why it needs to be fully formatted in a PC as a first step. I would try one more thing. Go to SDCARD.ORG and download the formatting tool from there. That "should" do a complete format of the SD card better than Windows might be able to. If that doesn't work, then yes, try another SD card. I personally recommend the Samsung Evo cards. amzn.to/42ys0yJ

I picked up the same sd card from amazon and it popped up with the 'upgrade your sd card' error. Could be a very commonly counterfeited sd card or is faulty with the hero 11 as a whole.

@@radkin9747 Could be a fake card alright, they are unfortunately pretty common. There are disk tools to be found online which can check your card for actual storage capacity and write speeds.

Always format the card in the camera before first using it. If you just did a firmware update, it's always a good idea to factory reset your camera afterwards.

I was recording a video tonight while riding my motorcycle. The video was me talking about how my GoPro 10 with media mod has been working a lot better since I followed your advice about doing a factory reset. Only to find when I stopped that for the first time in a long time my GoPro froze. Red light blinking but recording had stopped about 2 minutes into recording. Had to remove the battery to get control again. I am once again re-formatting my SDCARD. Do you recommend this on a scheduled basis? I'm finding I do it weekly. I've decided to order an Extreme Pro now rather than just the Extreme.

Wonder if it's a fake sd card. Those are usually much lower capacity than advertised and won't write information properly. I'd got with a Samsung pro plus instead, haven't seen anyone faking those, but SanDisk are popular, so they get faked a lot.

Good point about maybe trying Samsung. I also noticed that this particular SD card is 256gb. I'm wondering if that size is causing some hiccups.

I've used both 256 and 512GB cards without issue. Cards can eventually fail though, I have a 128GB card that seems to work find in my cameras but then will fail at random. Happens with no other card but this particular 128GB card. It's also one of my older cards, so I think some corruption simply can't be properly repaired So it may be worth seeing if a replacement SD card has the same issues. If it does, run a similar test but not on your motor bike, that would exclude some sort of vibrational issue. @@RamblinManMoto

I’m having this problem on my hero 11 mini where my videos are blank in the quik app. 128gb Samsung pro plus A2 V30 sad card. Can’t download or see preview of video. Download error and the videos are blank. Can you help.

Try a manual firmware update of the camera followed by a factory reset.

Also remove the SD card, put it in a PC or Mac, see if you cam view the files that way. See if it's a camera or app issue.

I am really hoping that this will work because I’m constantly having my GoPro shut down and tell me it’s repairing a file. Will this work on a MacBook Pro?

Make sure you are also using a recommended SD card and not something too slow such as a SanDisk ultra. Go to sdcard.org and you can download the formatting tool for MAC. Good luck!

Does the allocation size matter? Mine is defaulting to 128 and noticed yours said 256. Edit: Seems like it's based on size. Mine is only a 64Gb card.

It doesn't since you'll be formatting in the gopro afterwards and that will set its own allocation size

I use my gopro 9 connected to my computer as a webcam, I don't have a sd card in and it worked for months now it freezes with or without a sd card inside, you got any tip's? Cheers

Make sure you are using the original gopro cable that came with your camera. Make sure you don't have "quik" for desktop installed. Manually reload the firmware back onto your camera.

@Joseph-W-Hodge The GoPro USB-C pass thru door comes with a much longer cable. I would try with the original cable, if it works, then invest in the door and get the longer cable that comes with it.

@@aktashuseyin Try using a Samsung Pro Plus card with the camera. People had issues with the Hero 9 and Sandisk cards originally.

I'm not sure if it fixed anything yet cause I have to wait 20 minutes. So fingers 🤞 and it would be really nice to use my GoPro again.

Hopefully it did fix things, SD card corruption issues are the #2 reason for camera lockups. The #1 issue is using a bad SD card such as a Sandisk Ultra or a cheap knock off card.

@@DemonViewLLC currently I'm using whatever came with the camera. It's in the reader getting worked out for now. I also learned I was shooting in the wrong settings. Hypersmooth was on, working in 4k 60fps was over the processor. I vlog and do indoor weight loss videos. Those only only require 4 24fps or 4k 30fps to help keep it cool during stationary shots. I'll come back to update if I can get it working again. Thanks for the advice.

Hope it works out for you, feel free to drop me a line if you have any other issues. Yes, turning off hypersmooth on a camera that's static is always a good idea. You'll also get a better picture since you're not cropping your footage. I would also look at turning down the screen brightness to 10% (or having them turn off after 1 minute). If you're not using GPS (which you shouldn't be, you're staying still) turn it off also. If you're not using voice control, turn that off too. Finally, the best way to prevent overheating, remove the internal battery and power your camera exteranally. I can get 9hrs + 4K 30FPS doing this with a Hero 10 and Hero 11. @@BigManAlaska

@@retroonhisbikes I dunno, I think Lexar make an even faster one. Your extreme pro is more than fast enough for a Hero 11. It's no use paying hundreds for a card with a 300mbps write speed if the GoPro can only top 120mbps.

@@retroonhisbikes I’m not sure about the 11, but the 10 writes 4K at 100 mbps, so that SanDisk is too slow. I am convinced this is why I had issues with the SanDisk cards. I’ve had no issues (yet, 1000+ clips (fingers crossed)) since switching to Samsung Pro Plus cards AND performing full and in camera formats prior to use. I’ve also used the Lexar card that has 100+ write speed with no issues.

@@KevinandLizGrogan hi I use an samsung evo plus (256 gb) (130 mb/s read speed), do you think thats good enough?, (it writes above 30 mb/s) for 4k recording,. But when it watch my recordings it has this pause glitch ( image pauses for a short moment and sounds falls away) this occurs every couple of seconds, quite annoying.

Could be, but also realise that cameras record in different formats at different bit rates. So just because an SD card works in one camera recording mp4 at a bit rate of 60, doesn't mean the SD card will work in a camera recording HEVC with a bitrate of 100. So your card could still be the issue.

Make sure you have the HEVC codec installed on your PC. Also make sure you're using and Enduro battery and not the original standard battery in your camera.

Format times will depend on the speed of your card and the speed of your card reader.

You would format your SD cards if they become corrupt. SD corruption can sometimes happen and when it does, this is how you fix them. Seeing the "SD err" message on your GoPro is an indicator of SD card corruption.

I'm not sure Kodak cards will be fast enough for your GoPro camera, if they are too slow they will keep having corruption issues and may damage your camera. You should stick with recommended sd cards such as Samsung Pro Plus cards.
