On their mission to discover the world's biggest cave, veteran cave explorer Robbie Schmittner and his partner Toddy Waelde pledge to protect this Mecca of diving beneath the Yucatan. Robbie warns against the destructive forces affecting this area. Toddy discovers an unbroken Maya pot that could be thousands of years old.
Shot 100% on the HERO4® camera from ‪GoPro.com.
A very special thanks to:

Coming upon what looks to be no more than a puddle in the middle of a jungle only to jump in, realize there is no bottom, and discover an entire world below is the closest thing to a realized childhood fantasy I’ve ever seen. It’s both mesmerizing and terrifying all at the same time.

It really puts things into perspective when you realize that every single one of those stalactites/stalagmites indicates that these cave systems at one point in time weren't completely submerged for literally 10s to 100s of thousands of years.

That's awesome to think about and to remember that ~65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period a 10km wide asteroid hit right smack dab on where the Yucatan is today. Maybe that started the geological recipe that came together to make these caves.

Dove a Cenote a few months ago.. I was in the cavern section so the exit was always easily accessible. There's actually signs prior to the CAVE section that basically say "turn back or you'll die in here." It's pretty trippy but an incredible experience.

Sea levels used to be a lot lower! The last Ice Age, known as the Pleistocene Epoch, began almost 1.8 million years ago and lasted until approximately 11,700 years ago. During this time, massive glaciers covered most of the surface of the Earth. Slowly but surely, the ice melts, raising the sea level.

Maybe the Mayans tried to got to the “underworld” when the sea level was far lower. They may have lived down their to escape the Spanish conquered trying to take their gold but the6 lived there for a long time and it collapsed inside or water levels raised and flooded a whole underwater civilization. We will never know exactly what happened to the Mayans and it will be forever on my mind.

I wince when cave divers exhale bubbles. It was recently discovered that bubbles on the ceilings of caves cause pressure to build on the roof. This leads to eventual collapses of roof sections. This is what keeps trapping cave divers and killing them.

What if we are built to destroy planets? Just wait until humans "harvest" every planet around us. I don't think people "want" to destroy the planet doe, its just a side effect of what people want/need right now. Humans like nature is lazy, will take the way of least resistance even if it will cause harm.
