Only 12 hrs ago I was reading about the Cold War and Gorbachev on Wikipedia and watched this interview, and now I am reading he is no more Rest In Peace Gorbachev sir.

Seeing Gorbachev on TV regularly as a kid during the 80's, I came to my own conclusion that the scar on his head was actually a map of the USSR which he had tatooed on.

This man has always given me the impression of being a wise and compassionate person. His handling of US-USSR relations helped to temporarily ease tensions. He made concessions, not just for the good of the Soviet Union, but for the world. It’s very unfortunate that it is a naive thing to do in this world. Many people see his concessions as catastrophic for Russia and former Soviet states, so now we live in a world where nuclear powers are unwilling to sit at the table with anything other than the demands they have stood firm on for decades.

I remember a classmate was doing a presentation of the USSR to our world history class in middle school and one kid asked "Why does the president have a tattoo of Thailand on his forehead?" And now for the life of me cannot unthink that.

I'm an American. I feel like I grew up with Mr. Gorbachev. I think he was a compassionate man. I also think he was an extraordinary leader, like President Reagan.

I was 19 when the USSR collapsed. I had no idea of the gravity of it all. I thought it was just some reforms and a couple borders being opened up to other Soviets. Personally, I think Gorbachev just got caught holding the bag. The USSR could not last forever. Western pressure and Soviet aggression was a bad combination. After decades of aggression being met with fierce resistance and essentially walling yourself off from the world it died. As Margaret Thatcher said, “you’ll eventually run out of other people’s money”. Sadly, the future doesn’t look bright for Russia, or Russians.

Why do people hate him? I learnt in history classes is that he tried to save USSR through reforms but failed and in the end he allowed a peaceful transition of power without turning Russia into Syria.You may criticise his reforms but his reforms were actually peaceful and intended to help the soviet people and end the Cold War.

Many Russians call him 'too soft', 'traitor etc too. You see this is the price of being 'decent' in todays world. You will be called too soft and not actually remembered for the incredible humanity in your heart. On the other hand, being aggressive will lead you to being called other names as well. His time as General Secretary feels like ancient history to me. It’s crazy to see that he’s still alive. The way we learn history in school makes it seem like the collapse of the Soviet Union was a century ago, when really it hasn’t even been 30 years.

from the little i've heard and read of Gorbachev, he comes off as a genuinely good and sensible man. Also a patriot who put the best interest of his country and people before his own interests, a true leader who deserved the respect and love of his people.

It's Brezhnev to blame for killing the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to save it but failed, but I respect his decision and he saved millions of lives

When my son Paul was 10years old i video taped him sitting on Mr Gorbachev's lap and my 8 yea old daughter was sitting on his wife's lap and My wife Antonina was talking to both Mr Gorbachev and his wife in both Russian and Ukrainian. She was a Russian, French and Spanish language teacher with 2 Masters degrees from the University of California at Davis. She looked like Doris Day the movie star. She crashed the Banquette held in Mr Gorbachev's honor at the 100th commencement of the graduating class of Northeastern University in Boston. I was attending my 25th class reunion. I graduated with a BSME degree in Mechanical engineering class of 1973. I carried the American flag into the fleet center to lead the graduation class in. Mr Gorbachev was the featured speaker. He has the best speaking voice next to my fathers that i ever heard. He gave a one of a kind awesome speech. My wife and kids saw me on the big screen TV of the fleet center as i carried the flag in. My wife passed away in 2010 at age 60 from inflammatory breast cancer. Now i can say for certain Mr. Gorbachev is a very honorable man. I am American and very lucky to have attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduating. Our house was flooded and i no longer have the video tap. But I can still hear Mr Gorbachev's voice in my brain. He has a very good grip when he shakes your hand. I am now 75 years old living in senior housing in CT. I had 5 strokes and 4 heart attacks and my heart was shocked twice. I will never live as long as Mr Gorbachev. He Made a huge difference in our world. He would never order Ukraine to be attacked like Putin did. I am American with a Polish American mother and an American, Ukrainian father. I am not political but I am against this war with Ukraine. My fighting days are over. We are still the land of the free and the home of the brave. So help Ukraine before it is too late. They are asking for help.

He is not loved back home so see him as a traitor and i kinda understand why he wasn’t given a state funeral he was buried next to his wife at a cemetery in Moscow oblast

USSR was horrible in many respects and I would never want it back but I do respect him for putting people's lives over his power (unlike, say Putin). It was indeed his victory. Utmost respect to him.
