What a light in this world he was, I still watch the final tour and have a good cry, to maintain hope and inspiration in these troubling times. One person CAN make a difference.He touched so many lives.An example of ethics, decency, compassion, thoughtfulness, activism,humility, that we sorely need to find our way back to in our civilized societies.I hope his family is doing well, now.

Gord Downie is incredible. The guy is the most humble and intelligent musician out there. He isn't full of himself and has never written a bad song. The Tragically Hip is by far the greatest Canadian band if not the greatest band of all time. I'll always love The Hip. Gord Downie is probably the only musician out there that i'd actually love to meet and have a conversation with.

So this man and his wife have both been stricken with cancer....I'm at a loss for words here....So saddened...I lost a 35 year old nephew in January with Brain cancer that he carried with himself for at least 3 years. Only his wife, siblings and father knew about it. He didn't want anyone to treat him differently because of it. The strongest among us will do that, as I'm sure Gordon has done also. My salute goes out to man that has written and sung for the Greatest Band Canada has ever produced.

George has always been excellent at knowing exactly how to engage his interview subjects, saying just enough to pull them out of their shells, and then letting them say their peace. Even back in his MuchMusic days, you could tell he was going places. Only seen one interview of his go bad, Sebastian Bach, well after his Skid Row days, that was pretty damn funny to watch.

Sad,y, Ghomeshi was really talented at interviews as well, very informed and respectful and appreciative… his Tom Petty interview is supreme as a creative document. And he did really piss off BB Thornton for mentioning anything other than his band. Which is still funny… Pretending Thorton isn’t also a movie star, like what?

George isn't that young. I mean he's been around for quite awhile. But I do agree that those questions were very silly, but most likely picked by a producer to fill the finish cut just in case they didn't get the responses they wanted for the show. That's why they are at the end of the interview.

I saw them in 1992 at Max Bell in Calgary. I kind of liked them before that but I didn't know what I was in for. Then they hit the stage and opened with 50 Mission Cap and Gord Downie was strutting across the stage using the mic stand like a warped parade marshall. The place was partied to the gills and he hit it 110%. AC/DC should be so lucky.

I wasn't alive yet for the Bruins' cup victory in '72 but the whole neighbourhood heard me celebrating the win in 2011. Gord and I were both diagnosed with death around the same time. Death is a very funny thing that congers many emotions. You may not believe this but I would easily have passed life to him if I had a choice. Gord is Canada and someone who needed to continue life. If that meant me passing on then AOK with me ... that is just the Canadian way.

Gord talks about his goofy stage antics in this interview. Like his killer whale tank rant and such. It seemed that stuff just got more and more strange as time went on. Maybe it was a symptom of his illness. Hard to say. I remember going to his Fully Completely and Day for Night concerts and he didn’t do those rants. Maybe said a few things in between sets. But he mostly stuck to the script of his songs. It was interesting though how he would improvise at times. I wonder how the band felt about all that stuff during a performance. They had to keep playing while he talked over the music and added new things. They never missed a beat though and always came in when he went back to original song. These guys could play their stuff blindfolded. The Hip Rocks. RIP Gordie.

It is so good to see a Canadian artist wants to remain a Canadian and assert his identity. It is terrifying the price Mr. Downie has had to pay. Breast cancer, brain cancer... Fuck this shit. I know these things are not related, but DAMN! Just fuck it all straight to hell.
@maltelauridsbrigge3776

How the f- is cancer the "the price he had to pay" for being Canadian? Oh right, it isn't at all. Great post. -Nothing is more annoying than nationalistic cheerleaders on TV and elsewhere, or more inartistic than an "artist" who has sold his artistic freedom to work as a low-rent huckster for a nation or anything related to the daily indigestion and excretion of politics (which from the height of great art appears like a skidmark across a culture). Bob Dylan is worthy of honor no matter what his music given how he is THE great story of tossing "topical politics" back into the faces of those who begged him to imprison his art inside it if they would worship him In return. Which is not to be confused with telling stories about what one knows. -But is exactly what tossing one's art aside is so as to have room to work a new "customer base" by inserting the lowly aims of nationalism and ruining a good story . Be sure to cram in every proper noun that might generate cheap applause. Talk about hockey as though any "game" could define people. Not have a clue that Winnipeg should not be described as a "great city" to foreigners, or anyone with even a driver's license let alone a passport. Be unaware that Canadians in general are rather lacking in style and... interesting qualities. (Francophone Quebecers are exempted given you can guess the language of most people in Montreal by how styling they are, especially the women. Baggy tshirt with blue eye shadow? "You go girl!") But "The Hip" themselves are great - if you like plod-rock, say a Sears Bargain Basement version of Oasis. "Ooh, did you see how weird Downie was? He was pretending to eat berries. Unbelievable. And the guitar dude's hair? F-ing-A. Looks exactly like a weed dealer from 1978. They're amazing."
@maltelauridsbrigge3776
@maltelauridsbrigge3776 6 жыл бұрын
Also, no cheap offence to Downie intended, but more so serious offence: wasn't he supposed to die after actually using "terminal" cancer extensively to market a new tour? Appeared a cringeworthy, ignoble method in practice then, and since then...?
