From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian Island is a large island in Georgian Bay close to the communities of Penetanguishene and Midland, Ontario. The island, with its neighbours Hope Island and Beckwith Island, is a 5,428.1 hectares (13,413.1 acres) Ojibwa reserve, known as Christian Island Indian Reserve No. 30. Together with the 7.5 hectares (18.5 acres) Christian Island Indian Reserve No. 30A located at Cedar Point, Ontario and the 3.1 hectares (7.7 acres) Chippewa Island Indian Reserve located in Twelve Mile Sound, 27.5 kilometres (17.1 mi) north of Christian Island, it forms the land base for the Beausoleil First Nation. Christian Islands' highest elevation is 209 metres (686 feet) above sea level.
To the east of Christian Island is Giants Tomb Island, part of Awenda Provincial Park, and Beausoleil Island, part of UNESCO’s Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve (GBBR) and part of the Georgian Bay Islands National Park, consisting of 63 small islands in Georgian Bay, near Port Severn. UNESCO’s Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 347,000 hectares (860,000 acres) that stretches 200 kilometres (120 miles) along Georgian Bay's eastern coast from Port Severn to the French River, and is the world’s largest freshwater archipelago - known as The Thirty Thousand Islands.
Together with other First Nations in the area, the Beausoleil have filed a land claim for lands situated between Matchedash Bay at Coldwater and the narrows at Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching.[citation needed] While the Chippewa Island reserve is shared among Beausoleil and two other First Nations, the two Christian Island reserves are not

Gordon Lightfoot reminds us that sailing on Georgian Bay in the summer is A LOT different than sailing on Superior in November...!

The men who sailed the Edmund Fitzgerald into legend were real men with real balls; working sailors who earned their livelihoods on the water. These folks are weekend sailors, they probably earn their livelihoods behind a desk (no disrespect intended to either party)

One of my favorite songs - and one of Lightfoot's finest. "When the summer ends we will rest again in the lee of Christian Island ". Beautiful imagery.

Gordie nailed it, didn't he? It's the tempo that makes it the quintessential sailing song. And the squeeze box, of course.

Such a beautiful boat to back up Lightfoot's ballad. The INTEGRITY is a Gentleman's Cutter designed and built by Stirling & Son of Plymouth, England and launched in 2012 . She sails in the northern latitudes of Great Britain. Well done Jan.

Always loved this song, and then I took a sailing course in Cegep and was immediately hooked. Just a Laser class, so just one main mast, about 10' long. They are sooooo fun.

There's something magic about the way a wooden sail boat moves through the water. Watching this video took me back to those great days on Biscayne Bay on my Kings Cruiser.

I really enjoyed your presentation of one of my favorite GL songs. Living on Long Island inNY I had many opportunities to go sailing on different size boats, (from a Sunfish to a schooner), the most memorable being the week I volunteered to crew for the CLEARWATER organization. I had just discovered the music of Gordon Lightfoot and Christian Island ran through my head that whole week enhancing my experience (which I consider one of the best in my life). I have photos from that time and have often thought to make a video with Christian Island to post on KZfaq. The only other song that is as good is Christopher Cross's SAILING. Thank you so much for this post.

One of his best. This ballad gives out such a sense of peace and solitude and I always wondered if it was a metaphor for a strong faith, something so necessary in these interesting times.

I llike that thought , interesting take on it. I've always thought of him likening the ship to a woman, but something tells me alot of these tunes are meant to interpret in several ways.

MrChrispy777 You don't mean "inanimate." There's almost nothing as animated as a sailboat under sail! But you're right, of course...perfect unison of tune and lyric.
