Very true! They have great sense of humour and that was pure appreciation which I believe the Thai girl also did not get it! The Thal girl’s intentions were devotion and that the reason she thought they were seriously asking. Trivia: how many of them know these monks eat only two meals a day and it’s all with what people give them. One meal is remains from the previous day and the other is by yields from the current day which people contribute from their home religiously!!!!

Well, it's just her joke. I'm a local Lanna so I know that. For local Lanna people, if they take it serious, they will say "No" directly and walk away. I think she told him the recipe behide the camera, but Gordon can't make it because the traditional way to measure the ingredients is about "get used to it". We don't have measuring cups or spoons here. Only praticing everyday and weight by hand. And he can't find "Hangle spices" out of North. I know she may told him "Chillis, gralics, red onion, ginger, salt, lemon grass, fish sauce, tamarind, Hangle spices and peanuts". But she (we) has no idea how many cups or grams. We just "put" it, but it's so good because we're with our cultrue everyday. When I learned from my uncle (my uncle's 1 of persons who cooks the best food in the village), he made that joke to me either that I'll steal his recipes. But later he told them to me. The recipes aren't serious secrets here because they always tell others that "I put this, put that into the food"...any time we meet and eat food together. Yes, eat food at any neigbor's house. Only local Lanna people understand it.

My family did something like this twice a year, preparing meals for the monks. There's the talk about karma and all that but it's just a peace of mind for us. Also an excuse for a family gathering, too. It's like a potluck, each family brought one or two things and we combine everything into a full course meal. Dessert is often included like this, so I'm not that surprised the monks inquired.

30 year old American man, here. Started traveling to Thailand after high school at age 19; I’ve been living here as my full-time resendancy for the last 5 or so. I’ve got a family and mixed kids - the whole 9 yards. I just want to say there’s a lot of pointless judgmental going on in these comments; some towards Mr. Ramsay, some towards the monks, some towards Thai culture in general. A lot of you have it all wrong. It’s not wrong to be ignorant of someone else’s culture/way of mice. If you’ve never been to Thailand, and spent some serious time here away from the tourist traps, than trying to make assertions like you know what you’re talking about ultimately embarrasses you. Same thing for Gordon; you don’t know him, nor have you walked in his shoes. The Thais are just as arrogant and disrespectful to my culture and others as we can be towards theirs - keep that in mind. In the end we’re all people on earth so I suppose the right thing to do here is try and enjoy a few minutes of a very novel video with a shallow look into another world. Food is something that we all love and all know, so why not let people bond and bridge cultural gaps through sharing it? I could explain the whole thing behind his asking for dessert but I doubt it’ll help alleviate the negativity. If anyone really is interested I’d be happy to come back and edit this.

Buddhist here. Its taught that buddhist are to accept meals that are given to them regardless of whether there is meat in it or not. This goes back to Gautama when he had his monks beg for food. They only reject meat if the animal was slaughtered for them directly. Also, Buddhism doesn't enforce strict vegetarianism, and while Gautama did encourage it, didn't force it upon his followers.
