I see a lot of people saying how great it is that Ramsay is so open to new things, but believe me. He's not lying when he says camel is delicious. I (an American) tried it prepared in much less ideal circumstances (a large, institutional, cafeteria kitchen preparing it for a few thousand university students for a special occasion) and was still blown away by how delicious it was. After that, I tried to find it served more traditionally at a restaurant in Fez, but failed. I think it's much more a family or special occasion type meal than a restaurant staple, and it's also not the most common in general. Many of my Moroccan friends at university were trying it for the first time along with me.

"Originated with the Ottomans in the 12th century"? Glad to see Gordon and his producers/script writers care about the local culture. The Ottomans didn't exist until almost the 14th century, never conquered Morocco and only arrived in the Maghreb region in the 16th century.
@unborncookie9809

just did a quick research, they did originate from around the late 12th century but it was byzantine influence rather than ottoman. an argument could be made its actually from the roman since there have been public bathhouses in the region sporadically since the roman conquest, but most religious scholar seems to agree the hammam as a place to wash oneself before prayer originated from the byzantine

@@iwishiwasthomasshelby I lived there for a year and had zero problems. Moroccans were amazing and I felt super safe, especially in urban areas. Hardly anyone has a weapon, most of the crime is scamming people for money, the only issue I had over a whole year both in the city and in the countryside was when one young boy tried to pick my pocket. On the other hand, my Moroccan host brother came to America with a work visa and was robbed at gunpoint his first week... was so embarrassing. Calling it a warzone is completely inaccurate btw. Just know which areas to visit to be super safe, the same you would in any country. You could waltz around the hills outside Shefshaun for days and it'd be as safe as waltzing around Vermont lol. And the major cities are safer than most US cities...

Hammams originated in 7th century in Syria, Hammams were non existent in Turkish culture but because of the Constantinople's historically Greek inhabitants, they had retained a a strong Greco-Roman bath culture which was soon after adopted with the new Ottoman rulers.
@BE4STINESS
@BE4STINESS 2 жыл бұрын
I think they're referencing the arrival of hammams in Morocco specifically, therefore the 15th century and Ottoman origin makes sense. During their golden age the Ottomans either ruled or heavily influenced the entirety of the Maghreb, so I wouldn't be surprised if Ottoman influence brought hammams to Morocco. I do agree that the way they say it is wrong, making us believe that Ottomans invented the hammam. What you said in that regard is correct.
@mackjeez
@mackjeez 2 жыл бұрын
@@BE4STINESS You mean the Ottoman's were influenced by others, there was no bathing culture in the Turkic world, once the Turks integrated into Anatolia they were quickly influenced primarily by the Greeks(called Eastern Romans at the time) and Persians. As for Morocco the ruins of the oldest known Islamic hammam in Morocco, dates back to the late 8th century in Volubilis which predates the Ottoman empire several hundred years..

@@GG-ji7vr I stated specifically hammams not bathhouses, hammams are steam baths. The Ancient Greeks were the first to incorporate bath houses and even showers into their civilization, though there is evidence the Mohenjo-daro civilization were first. Believe it or not the Egyptians or any African culture did not have a bathing culture, the first bath houses were introduced by Ptolemy, numerous public baths were built in Egypt following the Greek model. The first bath houses in Morocco were built by Roman Emperor Gallienus. So yes the Greeks and Romans taught bathing culture to pretty much the world since other cultures were either introduced to it through colonization or adopted it like the Ottoman's.

Because it's brought out fresh each morning & sold rapidly. If it was dangerous they wouldn't be doing it & that guy wouldn't have any customers, would he?

@@prestonspears6078 so you mainly eat pork but cry about 4days old old camel meat?
@Lucifurion
@Lucifurion 2 жыл бұрын
Meat that you buy in stores is at least a couple of weeks old, sometimes over a month. Larger animals like beef, lamb and pork have to be left to hang in a cold room for at least a week before butchering & sale to relax, tenderize & develop flavor. 4 days is nothing.
