I come from Sweden, and there we used to have a lot of eels around the coast (sometimes they also go up into freshwater). They taste great as smoked, so I love it! But. Since the population has shrinked with over 90 percent, I no longer eat it. What we are doing to the environment is simply unbelievable - and it also affects what I can enjoy eating. This is NO criticism of the video or Maori culture, their eels might be fished in a sustainable way! Just telling you what happened in Sweden.

@@annother3350 Oh. To each their own, I think. There are recipies like that from southern Sweden too. But for me, since eel is such a "fat fish", smoking is the best. Great taste! I wish they where more common. Then I would feast away!

@@jokervienna6433 The only reason they were big in London in the 1800s were because they were the only thing that thrived in he contminated thames River! So they came to be thought of as 'rats of the sea' here. I would definitely try them smoked or some of the ways the japanese prepare them

@@annother3350 interesting! True that eels can take some water contamination. As the storys go, they used to put an eel in the wells in Sweden. Not bad water in a well, but the eel would eat rats, mice and other things that fell down. They have found some very old eels when renovating old properties.

@@maverickhayes8253 great! Then someone can eat smoked eels with a good conscience! In Sweden we have a crayfish-period in the autumn, and crayfish also feed on dead stuff. Still delicious, though more fun to fish than to eat, for me.

Fresh water eel is delicious. 1st time I ate it, i was 16years old. We skinned it, beheaded and pulled the "backbone" out. Sliced it crosswise to about the thickness of large scallops. Salt/pepper and lightly battered in ole Bay seasoned flour. Pan fried in peanut oil. Yum! We caught them on bamboo poles with single hooks and breadballs
