After the blow-up the previous night, this final night saw them ignoring each other completely. It was the last time they were ever in the same room.

Thank you for posting this. These convention videos have been fascinating to watch. Hard to find this kind of historical document online these days unless you really search. Lots of documentaries, but not as much raw footage. This was a treat.

Wow, I hate to agree with Gore Vidal, but he's spot on about televised presidential debates. I never watch them. It's not about issues, it's about public perception and packaging.

Vidal ended up being very right about the effect of the war on the election. Johnson was a bonehead

Hard to understand how someone who speaks in such a constipated and heavy footed and circumlocutory way as Buckley was ever thought of as a great debater.

You must be kidding. That or you must never have debated professionally yourself. He's positively brilliant. He's much, much better than Vidal - most of whose comments were pre-written and rehearsed and memorized. I think it a pity we can't give you the opportunity to square off against Buckley. You (or at least the viewing audience) would very quickly recognize why Buckley had his reputation.

@@danaarden8373 Buckley was a phoney. I'm British and can say it is extremely tedious to listen to how he affects a British accent which falls comically and embarrassingly flat. Once you push past his silly mannerisms, his nasal intonation, his odd saucer-eyed stares and clip-board props, there is very little to see except a huge ego and a very tiny mind.

@@danaarden8373 Buckley was only ever good against people who it seems you believe are worthy because they are professional debaters. The debate should be a by product of your work, not your work itself. That's why whenever faced with anyone who had no regard for the stuffy manners of a traditional debate, Buckley fell apart. Witness him against George Wallace where he fails, utterly, to think of specifics when asked for them on events in Alabama. Because Buckley and his ilk were used to talking about political theory with the occasional quotation (often out of context as Hitchens would point out to him often) to cover up the lack of actual detail. Vidal is talking about people, news, events. Buckley about concepts and ideas. That is truly rehearsed, the same points would be oft-quoted by him over decades. And frankly in these debates Buckley uses "infer" when he means "imply" 3 or 4 times. Such a facile mistake shows that he spent so much time looking for the most obscure words in the thesaurus that he lacked the fundamentals. Debate in such serious issues here - which included potential nuclear weapon use lest we forget - were not the time for a show-off of vocabulary but for an understanding of issues. Something Buckley always lacked. He could wax lyrical about theory but when applied to the real world and real people? He comes off as frankly sociopathic in his manner. Whatever one may say of Vidal that is never the case.

Vidal was homosexual. Buckley was homophobic. Homophobic’s are frequently latent homosexuals.
