Pixels: The Heart and Art of Photography

Just because we're in a fabulous location doesn't mean we'll produce fabulous photos. I share my experience and three lessons learned from time in the forest during a Creative Exploration workshop with TJ Thorne. Coming to you while on vacation in "Up North" Michigan!

What are your thoughts on the three questions I pose? 1) What do you love but find challenging to photograph? 2) How do you approach an overwhelming environment? 3) What's your preference for artistic expression? In-camera and/or post-processing?

How fascinating that you were craving "man-made objects and right angles." I noticed on a safari trip in South Africa once that I am terrrrrible at noticing shapes in the wild, but can easily spot a tiny speck of color. I could find the sitting butterfly or bird contrasted with all the brush, but struggled to find the larger animals that blended-in color-wise with all of the broooown.

So you had a taste of what I was experiencing, Denise! Isn't it interesting to notice what we notice when we're in a new environment? Your comment about all the brown reminded me of another place I was overwhelmed by a color: during a few days visiting relatives in Albuquerque, I was hyper-aware of the terracotta shades everywhere. Thank you for sharing and feeling my pain ;-)!

I agree - woodland photography is hard on so many levels. My instinct is to focus in on smaller and smaller things which is hard to break. It's a growth area for me. I do prefer in-camera expression and I think it may stem from the overwhelming number possibilities of post-processing.

So glad I'm not the only one who finds woodlands challenging. I share your impulse to go in for smaller scenes. And thanks for your point about the post-processing options! That resonates with me as well. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
