Performance Notes:
Elgar composed his fourteen “Variations on an Original Theme,” now commonly known as “Enigma Variations,” during 1898-99. He later wrote regarding his inspiration for the piece that it was a series of “sketches of the composer’s friends.” While the entire work is among the stalwarts of the orchestral repertoire, the Adagio variation became especially well-loved having been performed often at funerals and solemn occasions. “Nimrod” references the Biblical figure, who was a “mighty hunter,” and Elgar’s close friend, Augustus J. Jaeger, whose German last name translates to “hunter.” Once, when the composer had become extremely frustrated and ready to give up his efforts as a composer, Jaeger persuaded him to continue his work.

In my high-school band we played this and every time I'd fall asleep while waiting to come in, I was a 2nd trombone and we didn't come in till the middle. Fun times lol

I think it works great. It was also one of the toughest things I ever recorded. Those phrases are long! Hard to keep them “alive.”

Wonderful arrangement! I'm used to hearing strings in an orchestra or flutes and woodwinds in a band setting. This brass arrangement is filled with good goosebump moments! Genius! I want to hear a sub-bass part in my head...like 32' organ pipes! This is simply phenomenal!

Thanks. I tried to keep the tuba pretty low. Almost wanted to add another player. Did that with my setting of Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune.” Worked nicely, but it was kind of cheating.
